I wouldn't mind a bit of snow..supposed to be 88 here Fri-Sat...too soon for this. :(

I'd be happy to get a third of that temperature aroud here.

I guess Atlanta officials didn't want to repeat their total embarrassment by the inability to cope with two inches of snow by overcompensating with complete overkill.

Well, they missed it today, but it looks now like they may have it somewhat right for tomorrow.

The fair-sized snow and ice storm that was in Texas earlier has grown considerably, now stretches from Birmingham, Alabama (the leading edge of cold rain), freezing precipitation is falling on the middle of Mississippi and the Louisiana / Arkansas border area, and back a couple hundred miles into Texas. It's coming our way and should reach the Atlanta Metro area in about 3 hours, judging from the radar animations I have access to. The freezing precip that's part of the storm should be here about an hour after that.

This could get nasty, as right at the moment the storm is larger than the last one that paralyzed the ATL. Still, it's much warmer, so road icing may again be a complete non-issue.

Here in Charlotte they are advising people to wait before heading out on the road tomorrow to see what the weather brings. School is closed for Wednesday and probably will be on Thursday too.

I am a field sales rep and as such, my office is based out of my house. I was talking with my boss today and asked if I could have tomorrow off due to the weather and he laughed and reminded me of some overdue reports and projects that I needed to attend to!

A day off is when you call in "sick," as in sick & tired. Or you call in and say that your car won't start, and it won't if you don't put the key in. Or you call in and say there's a death in the family, and then you fly out to Vegas. And you can tell your boss that you have to leave early to take your kid to the dentist, and you drop the top on the car and just go cruising.'

Ya know, we need some kind of software that blocks you fair weather guys form posting in this thread!

Can't wait until it's like 140* out there this summer!

The majority of people who live 'out here' are people who used to live 'up there' and had their fill of 'the S word' and 'the C word' ('Cold!') so they left 'up there' and moved 'out here.'

We don't have to shovel snow. We don't have to scrape icy windshields. We don't slip on the ice.

What used to be a lightweight jacket for chilly evenings 'up there' is now my heavy winter coat for the dead of winter 'out here.'

But I try to not rub it in.

So there.

PS: You're right about the summer. We'll pay for the 8 months of 75*-85* temperatures when those 3 months of 110+* days roll in. But that's what Algore invented air conditioning for. And, then you guys 'up there' can tease the dickens out of us 'out here.'

Watched some goofy weather guy on the news this morning literally in full panic mode calling this latest winter weather across the south "ARMAGEDDON" ..............uhhh really ?

Here in western Iowa we often get coated with ice in the fall that doesn't melt til March yet somehow life goes on. They interviewed some woman saying she didn't care what those "Yankees" say, you can't drive in these conditions, sorry lady the side streets, secondary roads and parking lots around here are like that for months EVERY winter !!

Happily for all of us Yankees down here, all the smarter Southern folks who realized they can't cope stayed home today. I've been out lookin' around, and there's no real traction problem with this particular mess, right now, even in a pickup, if you have good M+S tires. The stuff is crunchy for the time being, and offers decent bite...unlike last time's sheet ice. Still, folks staying home keep the roads nice and clear for those of us who know how to drive in the stuff.

There is SOME ice buildup on trees etc., and I just heard a transformer blow not too far away. But my power is still on and I've got a stack of firewood, blankets and candles just in case.

Happy motoring everybody !! :)

SNOW DAY !!! WHOOPEE!!!

I was watching the weather while making butts a little bit ago. They're saying the Atlanta area is going to get hit really hard with about an inch of ice that's going to take down power lines. Good luck to those of you around Atlanta.

Its been snowing about an hour here in central NC. About 2" on the ground. Supposed to snow like this until about dusk before it starts to change over to sleet and freezing rain.

In the last hour here in South Charlotte, we have gone from snow to sleet back to snow. Haven't seen a car come down our hill in at least 30 minutes so I am guessing that most people stayed home.

The thing about sick days and snow days when you work from home is that it is really hard to not at least check in or do some work. Our home office is in Seattle and a bunch of people got the day after the Superbowl off because management knew they would be calling in if the Seahawks won so they went ahead and scaled back operations that day. I figure I will take my "sick days" when the weather is a bit nicer and I can be spray painting some bodies or walking around a car show!

The Atlanta area weather conditions are deteriorating, now with freezing rain and sleet beginning to seriously weigh the trees down. The roads are slicker than they were this AM, but you can get around easily if you have chains and a limited slip diff in the rear. M&S tires will still get you where you're going if you pay attention and go slow.

I just got back in from another tour of the town, and there's just about nobody on the roads, and everything is closed.

I put some bird food out, under one of the trucks that just happened to be parked on the lawn. A flock of robins was under it when I came in (where no ice had fallen) digging for bugs, so i figured I'd help them out a little.

It's just starting to come down here and stick in Knoxville, on the western edge of the storm. I feel like I'm inside a snow globe, and it's quite beautiful for now. We'll be past it in the morning.

We got about 4" here and traffic resembled ATL a few weeks ago! Some areas are still barely moving. Now sleeting and supposed to have freezing rain later. I'm good as long as power doesn't go out. Stocked up on snacks and a side trip to the ABC store.

Here in KC we have widespread ice damming on roofs. It looks as if it is going to create some damage to homes.

We have never had ice damming problems in the 40+ years I've been here.

It all began last week after a 6-8" snow
