Ok guys. Section 1 is finished and now its on to the build up of Section 2( a.k.a. the engine /nose module). I start with the engine panels and cowl gun panel. For those of you just tuning in, this is Section 2 as it is right now:

Justalittlebitleft002_zps2cf5b790.jpg

The next step is to fit the cowl gun cover/ trough on the top of the engine and have the cowl gun barrel openings coincide with the location of the gun barrels when installed. This is trickier than it sounds especially when the gun trough cover supplied in the Aires "double throw down" update set is too dang short!!! I used the cowl piece supplied in the Tamiya boxing and cut the machine gun access cover from the gun trough, then removed the molded in machine gun barrels and then drilled out the gun barrel openings.

The incorrect Aires part is on the right and the modified and correct length Tamiya part is on the left:

That looks outstanding Joe. What paints are you using BTW?

Air is a whole nother thing for me but I know you are using acrylics. It just looks too good to be anything else.

Acrylic believer since the 80's but serious since 2 years ago. Now more than ever.

Thanks Bob! I'm using a mix of Model Master and Vallejo acrylics with a touch of Model Master enamels for some of the details. I used a Mig Productions dark wash and some ground up black pastel to complete the weathering process. The exhausts are a project of their own paint wise.

I can believe that about the exhaust. I bought 3 sets of Vallejo acrylics and spent 2 hours last night futzing around with them. They cover so nice and go on so smoothly. I also made my own thinner as per a Youtube video and saved myself quite a bit.

I made some extra washes and tried them on scrap and they are looking pretty good as well as the stock Vallejo ones I bought.

Kuster assembly to begin pretty soon.

Carry on.

Youre right about how smoothly the Vallejo acrylics go on. I really like the Vallejo Air series. Goes on smooth as a baby's butt! Try the Mig Productions wash as the stuff works really well with acrylic paint. I used to hate acrylics for having to constantly clean the AB needle but it's all worth it to escape the odor of enamels and the fuming my whole family out of the house.

I'm with you on the fumes, but for me it's about drying time. Acrylics just dry so much faster than even laquers. And they really have almost no scent by the time you have cleaned the airbrush.

I do have some oils that I bought for washes as well. It's a bit old fashioned but oil washes have a certain appearance that is tough to beat. So I will be using those as well. But the large portion will be acrylics.

I almost forgot about it but you've got that right on the drying time Bob! Well the engine side panels are moving right along so far and took paint and weathering great.

This Aires cockpit/ engine revamp set was a real good experience in the fact that everything went really smooth on the construction end but really belly flopped on all the paneling. In addition to the gun trough issue we also have the cowl machine gun access panel problem of just not looking authentic at all. The Aires panel just LOOKS like a model part. No real rivets to speak of (and there were alot!!) and no level of detail either in addition to looking like a "blob" of a part. I spotted this shortcoming early on in the build and took care of it. I found an (you guessed it) 1/48 Eduard Fw190 D-9 "Weekend Edition" kit on sale at Squadron for 16 bucks and snagged it for the panel in question here.

EduardFw190D-9WeekendEdition_zpsc2fce9e2

Folks this is a steal for a kit like this and although I hated using it to rob a part from it, I also knew that I could count on ol' Libor at Eduard to ship me a replacment so that I could have a complete kit that I'll end up building. These D-9's are just beautiful aircraft and were referred to by alot of the German pilots that flew them as "Focke Mustangs". with a top speed almost matching that of the legendary P-51 somewhere in the 450 mph range and a firepower that all but exceeded the Mustang. Mustangs had six 12.7 mm .50 cal wing mounted machine guns vs. the two 13 mm cowl guns and two 20mm cannon mounted in the wing root of the 190 D-9. When the D-11/ D-13 came on board you could add a 30mm cannon firing through the prop spinner in addition to the other two. Whoever got in front of one of the D series 190's had a real bad day ahead of them, in short.

Ok enough on the technical specs of the mighty 190 D series. Pictured below are the Aires panel on the right and the Eduard part on the left. Which one would you use? lol . Thats what I thought.

Got with Libor already. The replacment part is enroute!!

Joe, that plane is really taking shape. I wouldn't know where to start with that one. I am a big fan of progression pics.

Alright Guys, believe it or not, I have been working on my Camaro. Since this will be a full photo-etched project, I had to get rid of the molded in windshield wipers, door handles, and the molded in Camaro script on the trunk, so I got my dremel and sandpaper, and went to work. I then put a couple coats of primer down, sanding in between coats.

Last coat of prime, sanded one more time, and ready for first coat of finish...........

C56DF048-orig_zps07301b84.jpg

Second coat of finish on with a sanding in between. The spoon was treated to a coat of primer, two coats of finish, and one coat of clear with no sanding. So the car should look a lot better than the spoon. The color is V-E-R-Y hard to pick up in pics.

Maybe one more coat of finish, then one or two coats of clear. Suggestions are welcomed.

You know I just read an article out of a recent FineScale Modeler magazine on mirror like finishes on airliners. They used primer for a base coat but the kicker was the use of future that was BRUSHED on. I couldn't believe it either but it worked but it worked like a charm! I'll PM you the articles if you want. I would like to add that if I were trying this technique that I would definitely practice on a spare model. I will also add that this being a car forum there is a world of folks here that can pull off some really killer finishes. I will be building my first "all out " car model sometime later this year so I guess I'll be finding out how well it works.

Well folks I got the cowling painted and weathered up. The replacement cowling should show up in the mail in a couple of weeks so I can make my Eduard 190 complete again. Will be building another 190 D-9 on down the road but closed up this time for the most part. Will leave engine bay and tailfin panel closed but may open up the wing cannons and cowl machine gun panels on that build.

Anyways here the panel is finished off:

This puppy is going to get wrapped up today it looks like so stay tuned later on tonight in case I post finishing pics. Just to give a heads up , my next build will be a the famous Ju-87 B-2 Stuka dive bomber. Mine will depict a bird flown in the Mediterranean theatre. First off this is going to be a fairly "colorful" build with a snake motif that adorns the whole side of the fuselage on this bird, Secondly I was going to open the engine up on this one too but that would take away from the wild a-- camo/ motif that this particular aircraft displayed in the summer of 1942 over Libya.

Here's the kit and all the accessories:

56f0d251-93b4-4ed0-8ac3-78cb899e98e1_zps

I do have plans to build the Jumo engine/ firewall assy and display that as a separate/ stand alone model. Got plans you know!

Here's the color scheme/ layout that I was talking about. Now who's gonna saw up engine panels and NOT display this cool scheme in its entirety??

0bed2e3d-600c-4666-afd3-77ec96e67c85_zps

and lastly, This interior / cockpit is going to take forever and I do mean a long, wound out time because there is more stuff in this interior than I've ever done. I did an He-111 cockpit interior around 14 years ago but it wasn't with half of the skills and didn't have half the parts that this AM kit does. For you guys out there that are unfamiliar with Aires resin/ PE update sets, they are da bomb!! Knowing that all AM stuff has at least some fit issues , these guys have a decent idea about the fit of parts into what they are modifying for. We'll see how this one turns out. I know that on my D-9 that is being built here that this Aires set was painless.

As far as references? Well, I've more than got that covered. Aero detail has got to be one of the best resource books for aircraft that I can find. I've got one for my D-9 that's being built here and around 6 others for different Luftwaffe birds such as the He-111, Bf110G, Bf109G, Fw190 A/F, Fw190 D, Ju-87D and a combo book that has the Me163 Komet and the He162 Volksjager jets. Anyways I could go off on that tangent for years.

Here's the reference stack up:

Startup004_zps378a4b5a.jpg

and then these two that I just picked up at Half Priced Books last week for 24 bucks:

Moreresearchmaterial_zps4fedd6c8.jpg

In short, I'm gonna have some fun with this one. Build time will be slowed as I have two dachshund puppies that are 17 and 16 years old. They now get up with me in the mornings and are really needy so they pre-occupy alot of my time in between building! I'm going to take my time with this one anyways as I am completing it in two other GB's and the start date for that is on the 1st of April (no April foolin' here) so the D-9 wrap up is right in time for that GB.

I'll put it in the intro for you if you'd like bud!

Hey Joe!

Sounds like if I post a picture, I'm in.

So here's the picture...

David it's good to see you here! That robot brings back some old memories.

Joe I'm not necessariy a Stuka fan, but that African bird with the snake is a fave.

Ok here's what I got completed during the week.

Antenna troughs scratchbuilt from strip stock.

DSCF4875_zpse880528b.jpg

There are two on this tank.

DSCF4873_zps52155a0e.jpg

Here is the scratchbuilt jackblock I made last night. The base kit dates from the early 90s and lacks detail in some areas. The jackblock was definately one so........

DSCF4876_zps2c8d672e.jpg

I used a bit of small angle to replicate the L shaped block locator guides. I'll make the strap from tape, the buckle from wire.

This is the grandson's project from last night.

If the wind ever goes below 30mph this morning we have a can of tan spray paint waiting patiently.

That Snaptite M1 is actually a great beginner kit. It has HUGE sprue attachment points, and all the typical downfalls of a snapper, but..........it build fast and looks good when done. All the things you look for when bringing a young person into the hobby.
