Box Art preference

  1. 1. What type of "Box Art" do you prefer?

    • Picture of real car ?
    • Picture of built up kit?
    • Some form of art work depicting the kit?

I love the work of artists like Sean and Jarius on the kit boxes. By the time the kit hits the market, with forums lke this, we know what's in the box, as well as if the kit is worth buying, based on the various opinions and reviews from members of the forum.

Ill throw my .02 in on this topic. Box art has never been a deciding factor in buying a kit. It just depends on if I want the vehicle or not. With that being said, I much prefer to look at the "art"work on the boxes. There are a few photo boxes that I display, but usually its the illustrated all the way. After all, there has to be an element of imagination to all of this no matter how old we get.

This is an interesting two-sided thingy. On the one hand, I prefer the stylized illustrations from an aesthetic and emotional standpoint, BUT (big but) I prefer to see how the model actually looks from a "how hard is it going to be to get it to look like the box-art" standpoint.

No way I would have bought the AMT "Sock it to Me" Corvette (expecting it to be a good base for the results I want, anyway) if there had been a decent photo of the front of the thing, and the chassis, on the top of the box. No matter how cool the illustration is, I'd really appreciate seeing a box-stock photo of the built model, big enough to tell how good or bad it really is, on one of the long sides of the box.

This was the last one that really p'd me off. You can NOT build the box-top version shown without aftermarket parts...like wheels and tires. I'd expected everything necessary to be in the box. Nope. Not in the one I bought, anyway.

I agree Bill that one was flat out deception. I have yet to buy any Dirttrack Racecar kits even though I like the subject matter.

I love box art and that's what I want on the box top. I want to see built-ups of the actual model on the side/end panels as well as a list of the kits features. I really like the part trees on the bottom of the box which Round2 is doing. I would prefer however if they showed the actual parts (drawing or photo) and not just the silhouette.

I actually am on the fench i like both, voted for actual photo because its nice to see what it would build into when finished, but how about the artwork drawing illustration be on the face of the box and photos of the actual kit on the sides?????? the best of both worlds....

I love the old art work boxes but it is nice to see a picture of the actual built model on the side of the box so you know exactly what your getting.

How about a clear plastic sealed box that you can see the parts through covered by a sleeve, such as with some CDs or DVDs?

A bit tough to do since model boxes are several trees deep. They'd have to do a whole new box concept, like the Japanese kits with the body etc in their own little compartments... and that would up the cost a few $$

I seem to remember some Matchbox boxes having a clear window on the back through which you could see a small section of the runners w/parts attached to them. It was a neat idea, but it really didn't work all that well. To me at least. I would always want to see more of what was inside than what I could glean through there.

I believe you're right. Lindberg also did the same thing with airplanes back in the '50s.

I want to see the actual built kit. I can come up with my own ideas for building it, what I need is to see if it's even worth buying in the first place.
