tubbs Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 yea, yea, I know, your as old as you feel. I feel not a day over 35, but my body is telling me something different. Was working on a 70 super bee, simple detail to the grill, or so it used to be. Painted the grille flat black, had to use the old reading glasses I used for very fine details to paint a grille, really?.... And a magnifying glass too. Started the grille surround in silver, touched the flat black several times. Now, I am not a award winning modeler by any means, but I did pretty good, now I can't even paint a simple grille surround, heck I can barely see it. Get my small halogen light..... GAAAA, to bright!! but what light I have just isn't enough, and these glasses, well they ain't doing the job either. Looked at the grille and the black paint I laid down on the body the next day, well, let's just say that the award winning builds I have in my head will never make it to the bench. Oh, I will still build, but I think the detail I want to put into the builds just took a walk, never to return. has this phenomenon hit anyone else....
Joe Handley Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I've been having issues with my knees, feet, and back lately. Feet are fairly easy to figure out why, I'm fat, work retail, and have shoes that are completely blow out. Knees, not sure, some of it could be the above, but Mom has a bunch of leg issues and Dad and I have to help her get out of chairs and I think I might be moving wrong while trying to get her out of those chairs and causing the knee as well as back problems beyond what the shoes are responsible for. Wouldn't be surprised if this weather is to blame too. I've actually started looking for jobs where I don't have to be on my feet all day now too.
slusher Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Hit me some a few weeks ago and I can't seem to foil and that's my disability. I do use reading glassed to build and paint by brush. Have your eyes checked. I am going again this month...
Dave Ambrose Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I had two reactions to being diagnosed with Presbyopia at 45: What the heck does Presbyterianism have to do with my eyesight? And I'm way too young for bifocals. But, bifocals it is, and I have a special pair of "office glasses" for computer use. This makes for 3 pairs of glasses I get to schlep around. Don't fight it. Get your eyes checked by a good optometrist and get the glasses you need. I have a magnifying light on my modeling bench and my general work bench. They help a lot. I find them more convenient than the tilt-down magnifiers, but for really fine work the tilt-downs can't be beat. I also have a lot of light available.
philo426 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I wonder if an Optivisor might help?.I am thinking of getting one myself.
Ramfins59 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I know that everyone always says "It's only a number" but tell that to your body and its parts that wind up being less "efficient" than they once were. Vision gets worse, teeth come loose or worse, hair falls out and what is left turns gray and/or white, back aches, knee and other joint pains, digestive issues, heart irregularities...... It seems that the higher the number of your age, the more issues you seem to develop and sometimes unexpectedly discover. I was scheduled to have Cataract surgery on my left eye on Wednesday, 3/19, but after getting the EKG that the eye doctor requested, I was informed this morning that I have Atrial Fibrillation which cancelled the procedure until further details and info can be obtained by a Cardiogram, plus I now get to take yet another prescription Med. called Pradaxa to avoid possibly having another stroke. Yes I use an Optivisor for close up work and it helps me immensely. I got bifocals at 43 years of age and it didn't bother me at all. I'd been wearing glasses since I was 6 years old so it was no big deal to me especially if it was going to help me see better. I'll be 67 in 2 weeks and physically, things sometimes just seem to go progressively downhill, however, mentally I am still in my 20's (well.... maybe my 40's...LOL) but at least I opened my eyes this morning so it started out as a good day. Don't let the "number" get to you. That's when you'll start to mentally either "give up or give in" which will NOT be a good thing. All us old farts have to hang in there and build all of the stuff we've been accumulating...!!! I certainly don't want to "see" all my "treasures" put out for a Garage Sale for 50 cents apiece.... !!! Please...... everyone stay well.
FASTBACK340 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I thought I had Plymouth emblems on my hub caps. They ended up being Chevy emblems. Ouch…. I know the feeling. I should USE my optivisor!
Harry P. Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Ok, talk about getting old... I still can't believe this, but as of 5:22 PM yesterday... I am a grandfather!
vettecote Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Age is just a number society has put on you...Joe
cobraman Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Ok, talk about getting old... I still can't believe this, but as of 5:22 PM yesterday... I am a grandfather! Congrats !
Harry P. Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Congrats ! I don't know if I should be proud or bummed out! But mom, dad and baby are doing great. This will definitely take time to sink in. My baby just had a baby! Man, time really flies.
disabled modeler Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 Been there too...still there. I just had an appointment with the eye doctor...age is catching up with me too. Buddy of mine uses the magnifying eye glasses with lights on them....seems to work for him anyway.
Ramfins59 Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I don't know if I should be proud or bummed out! But mom, dad and baby are doing great. This will definitely take time to sink in. My baby just had a baby! Man, time really flies. Harry, that is exactly how I felt when my oldest daughter had my grandson (who will be 3 on May 12th) Congratulations to you Harry. Now you'd better start stocking up on Snap Kits to both make for him to play with, and then to build with him when he gets old enough. You'll enjoy the heck out of it.
High octane Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Congrats to you Harry and the new mom & dad as well. I was a grandfather for the second time last August and I'm really lovin' it. My doctor asked me during my last visit how I felt, and I asked him how much time does he have to hear all my problems. LOL! Actually I feel pretty good for my age and am able to do just about everything that I want to do within reason. I thank God for my fairly good health. I'm also a firm believer in going to the doc regularly as I'm on a MISSION to collect as many pension checks as I can.

My baby just had a baby! Man, time really flies. You so right about time flying. Seems like just a few years ago my daughter and I were walking to the park to feed the ducks and now she's a full fledged lawyer. Where does the time go ? I know where the money went ! : )
slusher Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Ok, talk about getting old... I still can't believe this, but as of 5:22 PM yesterday... I am a grandfather! Harry, first congrats. I became a dad again in 2004 at 38 and now I am 48 with 5 granddaughters. my oldest son turns 30 this year I was 18 when he was born. I have a son 10. The good thing is spoiling them and sending them home....
LoneWolf15 Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Ok, talk about getting old... I still can't believe this, but as of 5:22 PM yesterday... I am a grandfather! And ...... You'll be a damned good one ! Congratulations ! Ain't it cool ? Lmao ! I love every minute of it !
Tom Geiger Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 I don't know if I should be proud or bummed out! But mom, dad and baby are doing great. This will definitely take time to sink in. My baby just had a baby! Man, time really flies. Congrats Harry! I'm not a grandfather at 55, and with two daughters aged 26 and 30 who think they have all the time in the world. I made my father a grandfather at 52! Enjoy it! Grandchildren are kids you can give back to their owners when they fuss!
Tom Geiger Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 yea, yea, I know, your as old as you feel. My first brush with my own mortality was in my mid 40s when I tried to read the date on a Mercury dime. So I got glasses and it's been downhill ever since! Life has been rushing by and I don't even notice how fast the years go! All I can remember is my grandfather at 88 telling me, "It all went so fast. Last thing I knew I was 18. And I still feel 18 inside."
Dave Ambrose Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Ok, talk about getting old... I still can't believe this, but as of 5:22 PM yesterday... I am a grandfather! That's awesome. They'll need your love, and just think, in a few years, you should get a new modeling building buddy.
oldcars Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Our greatgrandson just had his first birthday party on march 1st. Time goes so fast I try not look at a watch or calender anymore(only to see when doctor appointments are). Richard
58 Impala Posted March 18, 2014 Posted March 18, 2014 Congratulations Harry, I became a grandfather first time last year. My granddaughter was born the day after my 56th birthday, she is my sweetheart. My wife and I adore her. Just found out my daughter in law is due again this August. Hope at least one of my grandkids will be a future model builder.
