Progress? Yeah, sometimes... :P

Got a little more work done on the tractor- it'll be backdated to a '58. I also added a big front bumper with some tow hooks, just because I can. The driver's side mud flap is from an L-Series kit, the passenger's side one is, well, no longer with us.

That's the air compressor from the C-600 kit's 534 Super Duty gas V8 on the Cat- it's shorter and slanted to one side, so I'd hoped that would buy me a little engine room clearance. It probably did, but I still had to cut a hole for it in the floor of the cab- no bother, the bench seat I plan to use should cover it up well enough.

Hey Chuck grate work on the Ford. The "oldering" looks verry realistic and the tires give the hole thing a heavy work touch.

Thats some great weathering youve done . B) What mods do you have to do to make it a 58?

The most obvious things are quad headlights (I'm using some leftover Diamond Reo bezels and lenses for that- they aren't the best for use on a C-Series but they'll do), fill in the lines for the wiper motor access panels, and change the side badges. I'll probably leave off the side badges. Also, a round lamp has been added to each end of the grille- all 1957-1965 C-Series had lamps there, '66 and newer ones have the "plugs" with the four-pointed star design like the AMT kit has.

Hi chuck, first of all great job on the weathering, and the tires look perfect for this truck. I know we've sort of talked about this whole cab headlights being related to the year model before because I built my c series with single headlights and labeled it a 59 because I had seen them labeled like that before. I have been following ur progress and I dug a little deeper to find out why I had seen these trucks both ways. while I didn't find a definite answer, I did find some old brochures that will either clear up, or further confuse everyone, but I thought i'd share them here since we're talkin about it.

Here's a definite answer- all Ford C-Series tilt cabs built in model years 1958, 1959, and 1960 had quad headlights. The first year '57 model had single headlights, as did all '61 and newer examples. The adoption of quad lights for those three years was really the only thing Ford ever did with these trucks that you could call a major styling change. Other than changing the badges over the years, differences with the wipers, and the like, there were no other minor styling changes to speak of either.

A famous composite photo- showing the first C-series tilt cab ('57) on the right and the final year ('90) on the left. This pic pretty much shows all the differences between early and late two-headlight Ford tilt cabs.

Chuck thanks for the info on the cabs changes. Im realy liking the cab weathering they both look fantastic . Are you going to open up the small grills on the sides of the cabs?

I'll probably just paint them on. At one time there was a photo etch set for these which came with (among other items) the intake grilles for the the sides of the cabs. I wish AMT had added them for the reissues as a separate part, or even as a decal- even a decal would look better than nothing.

The '59 Tractor now has an exhaust setup. Since the L-series mufflers were molded open on the top, and a bit too large to comfortably fit under the C-Series, I cut away the kit mufflers and replaced them with some PVC tubing, "sleeved" inside with K&S aluminum tubing.
