geetee66 Posted May 13, 2014 Author Posted May 13, 2014 Really liking Your engine detailing and that paint work . . . . just "Be-Dazzling!" One wild ride for sure How did You accomplish Your masking? Thank You for sharing Later Russ Thanks Russ I used some 2.5mm tape in places, but I now wish I had used strips of Tamiya tape. The most problematic areas were caused by the lack of adhesion with the other tape. I burnished the tape edges thoroughly, but the narrow tape was not as sticky as the areas where Tamiya tape was used. Some of the scallops were cut on the body and some were done using pieces cut on the mat. What I'll do next time is use BMF and save myself hours of cleanup!!
rustybill1960 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Hmmmm, BMF, uh, I have heard some people use that. I have been to reluctant because of the cost. But, I guess if one wants better results, one will pay for them, Won't I?????? Thanks for the info. Your build is looking real sharp Gee-Man! Thank You for sharing Later Russ
Danno Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 WOW! Outstanding interior and engine work. Body/paint is looking great so far. And, the hubcap tip is appreciated! Gotta try that one!

Guy, if you do wind up eventually using BMF for masking, be prepared for a beeyotch of a time removing the BMF as it tends to stick REALLY GOOD when you paint over it. I had a heck of a time removing it when I used it to mask a paintjob.
DeeCee Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 That is looking great, i find a good quality painters tape, 3M brand, blue one, works great, i cut it on a piece of glass, only have a problem when i forgot to run my fingernail around the edges before painting.
Skip Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I've had good luck with vinyl tape, like electrical tape type. It cuts crisply, sticks, adheres on odd shapes. I've used this type of tape mostly on sign type projects, I've used it on models too with good luck. In some of the automotive related custom paint and airbrush related publications lately there are a lot of painters using the plotter type sheet vinyl (used for signs now days). You might see if you can get some from a local sign shop, if they can't fit it into their plotter they normally have no use for it. It's applied like a decal. Spritz the surface with a spray bottle (water), squeegee down with a soft rubber squeegee then lightly trim the desired pattern. Removes like tape and if applied correctly almost zero bleed.
rustybill1960 Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 (edited) Richard, Skip, Thank You for the info Dudes! I was wondering about the"stick" issue?!? Now, I know. Using BMF i was unsure of the edges and using the vinyl (electricians) tape, I wondered about the residue? Guess I will find out, "Yes?" Thank You both and GeeTee, for bringing about this question! Thank You "ALL" for sharing Later Russ Edited May 21, 2014 by rustybill1960

I can easily imagine the rage I would be in, once I discovered how difficult it would be to remove the BMF...
geetee66 Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 This project is now UNDER GLASS (at last...!!) Thanks to everyone who followed this and contributed to the banter.
