Agent G Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I have been building military subjects nonstop for the better part of a year. I decided it's time to take a break and build a car. One of my favorites is any deuce with an Ardun head engine. I found this while wondering around Wally World today, it has the appropriate Ardun engine. When I got home I dug this moldy oldy from the stash. I began by modifying the cross member to accept the shorter engine. A bit o' frame work. You can see where the front motor mounts will be located. Nothing's been cleaned up yet. I'm tacking things together to check the fit. This was a later issue of the venerable '32 Ford Three Window and in my eyes the molds are certainly showing their age. G
freakshow12 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 When I put a flathead in this frame I cut the front mount from the truck frame and grafted it into the 32 frame. This is mainly because flatheads have the front mount on the front cover
my80malibu Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I believe that was the first issue three window. They had issue's with the rear window, and trunk decklid.area in the first batch.
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 (edited) Perfect combo...a Deuce 3W with an Ardun. Perfect perfect perfect. When I put a flathead in this frame I cut the front mount from the truck frame and grafted it into the 32 frame. This is mainly because flatheads have the front mount on the front cover Just for the record, it's only some of the later model engines that have the front mount at the center of the "front cover". Ford fiddled around with a single front mount, and two side-mounts on the transmission, but went back to the two-front, one at the gearbox. You will find that the vast majority of Ford flathead V8 engines have the front mounts on the corners of the block, and from '37 on as integral parts of the water pumps (still on the corners, like zo). freakshow12 Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 ^^. Those are the ones I meant. I have a few 1:1 49-51 flatheads at home and they are this way. I have never seen the earlier ones or just never noticed. The pic helps with what I was trying to say though. I just swap that whole crossmember in
Agent G Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 (edited) Thanks for the tip Fred. I was just going to add two motor mounts to the frame but will give your idea some thought. The kit flattie is like the one pictured above. Thanks for the support gentlemen. Danno I might add something "explosive" down the road. Gabriel this was the first and if I recall correctly has been in production for the better part of 15 years now. Lots of misaligned mold marks and strange lumps and bumps. Plenty of sink marks too. I'll add additional pics tonight after work. G Edited May 21, 2014 by Agent G
RAT-T Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 COOL BUILD. I DIDN'T KNOW WALMART WAS SELLING MODELS AGAIN
Agent G Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 Tom I didn't either until I was walking by the toy aisle on my way to find spray paint. I saw this truck kit had an Ardun engine and "the wheels immediately began to turn". G
Jantrix Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Looking forward to this. I did an AMT '34 Ford pick-up with the Ardun from the '50 and it worked out great.
Agent G Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 Thank you all! I spent so much time cleaning mold seams on the body last night it was too late to take pics. I'll try tonight right after work. G
Tom Geiger Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Lots of misaligned mold marks and strange lumps and bumps. Plenty of sink marks too. I'll add additional pics tonight after work. a funny thing. We all take the clean up part of the build for granted and I never gave much thought to the time spent since it's a hobby and we don't keep track. Then I was doing the 24 Hour Build and started with the old Revell Miss Deal kit. Yes, this kit is old and maybe a worse case for clean up, but I was dismayed that I started at noon and by 6pm only had a pile of primed parts! Yea, there was something like 6 hours of clean up!
Agent G Posted May 22, 2014 Author Posted May 22, 2014 Tom I have loved this kit since it was introduced and have purchased many over the years. This one has been sitting for a bit but there is a marked difference in mold quality between this and previous 32's I've done. I have at least two hours in the frame and spent an hour on the body late yesterday evening. I'm no where near done with the body, at least not to my nitpicking standards anyway. Now I have built one Revell '32 five window and have one in the stash and it is apparent the molds are newer. G

Ace-Garageguy Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 ... I was just going to add two motor mounts to the frame but will give your idea some thought. The kit flattie is like the one pictured above... G Either way is potentially correct, even for an Ardun-equipped engine. Any of the flatheads can be set up for either two-front-block-corner mounts, or one center-engine lower mount. Just remember if you use only a center front mount, you have to use 2 side mounts on the gearbox end so you still get a stable 3-point system. I've seen some of your first rate military work, so I figured you're a detail kinda guy.
Agent G Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 Detail obsessed I would say! The kits engine has the twin front mounts so I'm going with that. The left front mount will take the place on the frame where the kit has the steering box. I googled dozens of images and discovered the location of that box really doesn't matter as long as your steering shaft has the right number of couplings. I said I was obsessed.......... Any way here's what I mean about the frame. All that pink is Bondo filling sink marks. This one's to be a hiboy so that frame is quite visible. Here's where I left the body last night. Hard to see the seams but some things are visible nonetheless. Theres a nit in the trunk panel line on the drivers side just above the lower panel line. It's by that smudge on the trunk lid. See the tulip panel and the two prominent seams extending fron the trunk to the base of the roof? Yeah that's a flat seamless panel on Henry's cars. It is actually a raised portion between the trunk seam lines that is going to have to be filed down it's that high. It's a curse I have I tell ya. A curse. G
Jordan 191 Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 The five window seems like it is very new and requires only minimal cleanup, but mine do have sink marks on the frames. Great project!
Agent G Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 I have worked all week on the kit body. Primer, file, sand, primer, sand etc. etc. etc. I believe she's finally done. The modified chassis and trans mount are coming along quite nicely. It's now time to work on the Ardun heads and carbs. I'll post pics later today. G
