Hi, do you guys know of any other masking tape that wrks just as great as tamiyas masking tape? I would love to find a alternative, since tamiyas masking tape is kinda expensive.

In a word, no. I use blue painter's tape for large areas and Tamiya for the edges. To me, it's worth every penny to not get bleed through on a paint job. The way I look at it, it probably saves me money on paint.

Frog tape- their tape comes in green and a yellow version. the yellow is as close to the Tamiya as I have ever found. Also a lot more tape for the money. It is available at paint stores but now is showing up at the big home improvement stores. Trust me, you will never go back to the Tamiya tape.

Tamiya tape is just someone elses, they put in a bag and charge about x5. Kamoi tape is the name. Few years ago they moved into Europe themselves, worth seeing if found in the US

It's generically known as "kabuki tape". I use the yellow Frogtape (available at Wal-Mart) it is very close to Tamiya tape. Shurtape also sells a kabuki tape known as Razor Edge Gold CP-60.

The most important thing is to cut off the tacky edge of the tape. A lot of dirt gets stuck in the adhesive and will really ruin the chances of a crisp line.

I just tried Tamiya tape on the last 2 models I finished and it worked GREAT for masking off the edges on 2 tone paint jobs. Absolutely NO paint bleed and it DID NOT pull up any paint when peeling it off. Just use it at the edges and use regular masking tape for the rest. Yes it is sort of pricey, but, like BMF, you get GREAT results that are well worth the price.

I've tried Frog green and the yellow and find them to be garbage. I gladly pay the extra price for Tamiya tape.

Been there, done that and I agree completely...there is no replacement for Tamiya's tape and most of their products! ;)

I buy one roll of each size and with shipping comes to $10, thats a darn good deal for Tamiya.

I do use Frog tape, but only to cover , not for lines , its not design for most hobby paints, its only meant for water based paints I believe

Exactly the way most of us work. Tamiya tape will last a very long time this way. Lately I've been repainting single panels and have had to mask off most of a mini van. I found that in addition to using Tamiya tape for the fine edge, then painters blue tape against that, I have been wrapping the model in Glad Press-n-Seal plastic wrap. It's a little tacky but pretty much just sticks to itself. Then I seal off those edges with the painters tape.

I've read that 1:1 car painters will throw out an entire roll of masking tape if it hits the floor, because once the edge touches the ground it has dirt in it, thus ruining the edge line. As such, I never let my rolls of tape sit on the bench. I keep them on hooks hanging off the edge of the shelf over the bench. It took a lot of discipline to do that at first, now it's just second nature!

That's why I spent the little extra and got the Tamiya dispenser too. Well worth the money it cost.

Some things you can go cheap on, but taping and prepping for paint isn't one of them. 3M masking for broad areas, Tamiya for edging. It may be more expensive but detail taping doesn't use a lot of tape either so it'll last for a while.

That's really smart. Great tip.

Unfortunately I can not do that at the moment as I do not have a mancave in my new home, everything has to be tucked away.

The dispenser is really an investment.

Good point. I have my Tamiya tapes in the dispenser too. They sit on hooks too, if just for convenience for grabbing them and knowing where they are. My comment was more for the roll of blue painters tape.

The dispensers are a good thing. I'll have to find a way/location to hang rolls of masking tape instead of laying them on their sides.

To prevent the bad edge problem, I usually put the tape I've chosen on a piece of glass, using a metal straightedge and a new 11 blade, cut a fresh edge on it.

When I order Tamiya refills I get about five rolls to save on shipping. I have had the same dispenser for about 3 years now.

One point that I think is being missed here is that application of the paint is important too. Never spray into the edge and laydown a coat of clear to seal the edge.
