slusher Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I hung out in the model isle as a kid and now I hang out in the model isle still but with a cane and grey hair... You really can't help what people think...
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 As long as you keep your trousers up, I think you should be OK. Oh, and never say "would you like a piece of candy, little boy (or girl, as the case may be) ?".

Problem here isn't modeler, it's the perception of the modeler by the general public, and generally speaking..........the general plublic can be complete and utter ignorant idiots.

But petaphile never there are things that need to be done to those those creeps in dark basements without laws. But I doubt you find those cretins in a hobby shop honestly You'd be more likely to find them in places like Toy Stores. One of the reasons I hated running register at Toy's "R" Us was that we had to ask everybody their phone numbers to start the transaction. The answers ranged from ok and getting "a number" (never sure if they were real), to not today, to "NO! YOU'RE JUST GOING TO SELL IT TO BILL CLINTON!!!!" (yes, that one actually happened to a kid I worked there with!), but my concern was the if there was a lone guy in line behind and could hear the parent giving the number, they could use that to track their next victim via phone book.
Agent G Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 I too am the gray haired old guy hanging out in the hobby shop. I'm one of many in my LHS! Food for thought time. I explained to my grandson today that a typical suburban SUV can tell a predator all he or she needs to know about the family. Stickfigures on the tailgate immediately identify who comprises the family unit and what mom or pop do for a living. It even tells you to beware of the dog or dogs and what other pets could be present. School stickers/bumper stickers lead you to the general area of the residence as do any city stickers/inspection stickers on the windshield. Sometimes a casual glance inside tells you everything. It never ceases to amaze me what folks leave lying in the open inside their vehicles. I'm talking mail, all sorts of personal papers, as well as receipts for vehicle service/inspection/registration. Not to mention laptops, cameras and phones just sitting there waiting to be taken. Has this sunk in yet? Have I hit a nerve? Have you read this and immediately wondered about your own vehicle? Good. Am I a pervert, or just paranoid? Neither. I'm a cop. I pay attention to what I hear in suspect/victim/witness interviews. That's how guys like me solve serial murder/rape/molestation cases. The real predator is the guy or gal you would never expect. It's a cruel world and folks just don't get it. G

Tom Geiger Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 (edited) I don't know if society has gotten worse or we just have a heightened sense of awareness today. I believe there were always pedophiles, rapists and serial murderers, only it wasn't 'out there' as it is today. Back when we were young, people had 'funny uncles' and the 'odd kid down the street', both folks that young kids needed to avoid. It was brushed under the rug, and as such, a lot of it wasn't prosecuted. For instance digging back to my youth, I knew of a story of a teen age boy who molested a little girl he was babysitting. His parents were informed and I guess he got a beating and was never to babysit again. And that was it. Today would be a different story. I also know of someone whose young sister disappeared in 1965 and was never found. And when I was a kid I lived across the street from a kid who would later be a mass murderer. Stuff happened. With that heightened sense of awareness, people today have lost some freedoms, and are much more cautious about everything, even to the point of over reacting. And that's why we don't feel comfortable talking to kids today, or even smiling at babies in stores. Sad. Edited August 1, 2014 by Tom Geiger

I was told a good detective and investigator is always curious and observant. They also know when people are not truthful. I was told this by a police chief...

Joe Handley Posted August 1, 2014 Posted August 1, 2014 Political Correctness has stifling consequences Political Correctness doesn't have much to do with this outside of those who are thought to be the deviants in question aren't as likely to be drug into the streets and beat by some wanna-be posse for just being suspected any more.........Now it's all done via social media instead and to hurt reputations instead of causing physical injuries that could lead to jail time.
Agent G Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 G great point. I was told a good detective and investigator is always curious and observant. They also know when people are not truthful. I was told this by a police chief... A good investigator never asks a question he or she doesn't already know the answer to. I always called it "doing my homework". The only surprise I ever wanted in an interview was a confession about shooting JFK. Even then.................. G

unclescott58 Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 (edited) This subject is always a worry when your like me and work with kids for a living. I work as a substitute educational para. In that job, one has to be so careful about what one says and does. Especially if your put into a situation where there is not another adult around. It's a shame. There have been times with very young kids where I've had to help with snaps on pants after they've gone to bathroom. And if your well liked and the kids do feel safe with you, the younger ones love to give hugs. In some case even want to sit on your lap. These things are tough. I love kids. And they really tend to like me. But, being a middle age single man you have be so careful. Nothing angers me more than when people do violate kids in some manner. Especially educators. It gives the rest of us decent caring (especially male) educators a black eye. My biggest rule in my life and my job is to try and not harm anybody, in anyway. But, especially children. Do I make mistakes? Violate the norm sometime? Yes I do. But, I will never violate a child in way that will do permanent harm or get me in legal trouble. By the way, the first time I worked at a high school, a friend jokingly asked me if the girls there were hot? I said, " Yes, until they open up their mouths and you realize how immature they are." I do love the kids. But, not in a sexual way. Scott Edited August 3, 2014 by unclescott58
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 (edited) This is another case where bottom-feeding filth with no self-restraint and no respect for other human beings, even little helpless ones, have made things complicated for the rest of us...the old lowest-common-denominator-human-garbage-ruining-life syndrome. It's hard to believe that even members of the clergy, and educators...people in positions of what should be unimpeachable trust with young ones... can justify to their sick, sick souls that using children for their pleasure is somehow OK. And some of these twisted predators even have the audacity to call it "love". I'm surprised they even allow Santa Claus at malls and stores anymore. If the guy forgets he has a little flashlight in his pants pocket, and some kid runs and tells his mommy he felt something...funny...while sitting on Santa's lap, ol' St. Nick could be tied up and burned at a stake. On the other hand, any adult who actually DOES have inappropriate contact with a child should be cut up into small pieces, very very slowly, and flushed into a septic tank.
