70mach1 Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 This car was a real (PITA). It's an old Monogram kit. This car is definitely a skill level 3, it should be at 5. It required a lot of test fitting because of the tolerances. The main issue is that the frame was 3 mm too short, which had to be corrected in order for the bonnett hinges to operate properly and to get the correct wheel base, but still a very nice kit and pretty well engineered for its age. Refinished in BASF German Silver; interior and chassis refinshed in PPG lacquers, parts box decals, clear coated in DuPont urethane clear, engine was wired and plumbed, scratch built 2 air filters and front oil cooler.
oldcars Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 It came out great. When I built the same kit(thousands of years ago) by the time I was through I think I became a Ferrari fan. You did a super job(unlike mine). Richard
rick6343 Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Looks nice! I have one on the "to-build" pile; where/how did you stretch the frame?
70mach1 Posted January 14, 2008 Author Posted January 14, 2008 I had to extend the rear portion of the man framrails witha piece of 3mm rectangular plastic stock, you have to do this to get the correct wheelbase and get engine cover hinge geometry correct, this is a must!
jbwelda Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 it might have been a PITA but you sure did a great job of it! all the body panels look to fit well and thats the big problem i had with this kit. i think i gave up and its half built in the box somewhere. sure wish i could say yours was my outcome!
IMSANUT Posted September 14, 2012 Posted September 14, 2012 Beautiful build of the vintage Aurora kit. I have a pair of these in the build pile, one intended for an old slot car body of the RSK to go along with an old resin trans kit. Wonderful subject done right. Bravo.
unclescott58 Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Beautiful model. Sounds like a bit of a pain to build. Too bad. A very nice looking car.
ZIL 111V Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Beautiful work for an ex-Aurora kit, looks absolutely stunning!
Foxer Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 That looks grand!I have always eyed these kits and never took the plunge since I didn't know how they were. That's interesting having to extend the frame ... and you'd never know it looking at yours.
Intmd8r Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Real nice work on this one. I've been wanting to build one myself, but your review of the kit echo's similar reviews I've read. I should stay away, but your build makes me want one.....
bbowser Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 I've got one of these in the pile, thanks for the tip about extending the frame. If mine is half as nice as yours I'll be well pleased, great work.
Crazy Ed Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 A bit of a Heads Up on the Monogram Porsche 904 KIT'S. If you want a Full Detail Kit look for the one with the #86 on the Car and Skill Level 3 on the Cover. The ones with # 50 and 34 are Curbside.
