well, I see you guys had a good weekend on here, any model building get done? I didn't even open the door to the war room. top 10 bands, hmmm, can't really do it. too many I like, but I will have to say Z Z Top is up there (I am surprised a few mentioned them) but the old Z Z, not the techno Z Z. judas priest (same comment on them too). love anything Paul Carrack does. Heart, AC/DC pre Brian Johnson, Small Faces and of course, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Ted Nugent. i'm more of that "mixed tape" kind of guy.... never did care for these guys till I got older and really "listened" to the music...

no, not the doobie bro's....

The girls don't seem to care what's on

As long as it plays till dawn

Nothin' but blues and Elvis

And somebody else's favorite song

here is an off the wall song that everyone should know and will never be caught singing it in public.

You have so many relationships in this life

Only one or two will last

You're going through all this pain and strife

Then you turn your back and they're gone so fast

And they're gone so fast

So hold on the ones who really care

In the end they'll be the only ones there

When you get old and start losing your hair

Can you tell me who will still care

Can you tell me who will still care

have to admit, I wouldn't get this one, lets see if you guys can.

Oh god no! I know this song because I use to get drunk and sing it at karaoke occasionally....

You like some good music, Harry! I like the Beatles a lot, but their later stuff, after they quit with the "pop" songs and started delving deeper into more complex stuff. "A Day in the Life" is probably my favorite by them.....

My opinion (after reading several very comprehensive Beatles books)... in the beginning Brian Epstein was simply looking for another act that would be able to crank out "hits." Nothing wrong with that–it's a perfectly reasonable business model. And Brian was first and foremost a businessman, not a music guy. But the Beatles were just way too talented to be limited to being just a "hits" band. As cruel as this may sound, Brian Epstein's suicide may well have been the best thing to ever happen to the Beatles, because once they were out from under his control, they were free to do what they wanted to do, not what Brian wanted them to do. And George Martin was a big part of their post-Brian creativity... he really was the "fifth Beatle" in the recording studio.

My opinion... the Beatles were freakin' musical geniuses. Ok, maybe not Ringo... :P. No offense to Ringo, but he was obviously not on the same level as John, Paul, and George. A perfectly competent and serviceable drummer and a genuine nice guy, for sure... but nowhere near the level of talent and creativity that the other three were. Compared to the "manufactured" pop stars with questionable talent (if any at all) that rule the charts these days, what the Beatles created is amazing. Like their music or not, but there's no denying they are head and shoulders above the typical rock and roll band.

How many other bands could have created a song like "Blackbird" and one like "Helter Skelter?"

Ringo was on Letterman many years ago and Dave asked him, "Who's the best drummer in rock n roll?" And with no hesitation whatsoever, and not sounding joking or ironic at all, Ringo said, "I am." And of course I laughed at him.

And from then on, every time I hear any Beatles song, I listen carefully to the drumming. And you know what? It's just possible that he was right!

He's not flashy, but damned if he doesn't always lay down the absolutely perfect drum track for every song. He's far underrated, IMHO.

He's far underrated, IMHO.

Gotta disagree. He is competent. He would have made a good session drummer. But there are so many better rock drummers. Where to even begin? John Bonham. Dave Grohl. Max Weinberg. Mick Fleetwood. Nick Mason. The list goes on...

^ forgot Moonie...

Didn't forget, just don't think he's all that special. If Ringo is under-rated, Moon is way over-rated, IMO.

Edit: I also like Bill Berry of REM.

"Underrated" and "competent" aren't mutually exclusive, especially when so many people seem to have such a low opinion of Ringo.

Can't disagree with you on Moon. Come to think of it, we could have a pretty good thread on who's overrated and who's underrated in rock. B)

I kinda like Ringo, not for his drumming, but because he did some voice-over work for a cartoon that I'm a fan of..... He was the alien duck brothers on the Courage The Cowardly Dog show!

Everybody likes Ringo! He has to be one of the nicest people you could ever meet. He's a real sweetheart from everything I've ever seen and/or read. And he's a good drummer, no doubt. I just think that his reputation has been helped by the fact that he was the drummer of the Beatles. If he had been the drummer of the Hollies or the Dave Clark Five, nobody would rank him in the top 10 of greaterst rock drummers.

Nobody too famous sang this (the best version was on a Scopitone); it's a movie title song:

She'll turn your head, though she might use a judo hold

And on her shoulder's a chip made of solid gold

If you're a master of the underworld you'll be accepted in her queue

She is the perfect mistress of her art

She is the perfect mistress, too

Again a movie song (not a title song), this time sung by somebody famous; not a hit but should have been:

She makes love without a smile

Ooh hot dog it drives me wild

occasionally?! hmmmm, I bet your singing it in the shower right now. I know it took all afternoon for me to stop humming it.

oh yea, your correct.

that's exactly what the Beatles needed. someone not to step on the guitar work of John and George. I really think the music was secondary to the Beatles lyric writing. me, I am not a Beatles fan, don't own one Beatles album, but can appreciate everything that they have done. the band I don't get is the

Rolling Stones. don't think any of those guys can hold a candle to the Beatles talent.
