Mom always said "if someone steals, they'll usually lie, too".

you gonna believe a cop, or my Mom?

(No Offense Intended)

That would depend---Was your mom a cop ?

No humor in the obviously anti Christian remarks I see in some posts here.:(

Of course!

But not so much 'lost' as 'p!ssed away.' He resigned in lieu of firing. You don't get a pension when you quit.

That's the way it works. There's only four ways to end a law enforcement career of that many years. If you have enough years of service (he did), you can ask for retirement and if you qualify, they will retire you with whatever pension you've earned. Or, you can quit in which case you cannot get a pension. Or, you can be fired, in which case you are not eligible for pension. Or, you can die in place.

Had this guy not resigned, he would have been suspended, prosecuted and upon conviction, fired. Then he would not be eligible for pension.

Any way you look at it, he paid A LOT for his decision to not pay for a few hobby supplies. But, like I said, I have no sympathy. He made his own choice and he had to know better, unless he was mentally ill with a disorder that caused him to take irrational chances of being caught . . . like kleptomania or some other 'crying out' disorder.

I understand your and G point since your law men. He knew better. Maybe he thought he could get away with it. I wonder what his excuse was everyone has one....

Mom wasn't a cop, liar, or thief.

but i'll bet over the years the cop's family benefitted from his "bonuses".

Yeah. They probably got a lot out of an occasional free Xacto knife or bottle of paint.

A (union) policeman shoplifting from Hobby Lobby does not sound very Christian to me .

I would LOVE to hear Sheriff Joe Arpaio's thoughts on the matter.....as he hands the shoplifting cop his pink underwear and jump suit  even though he probably will never see the inside of a jail cell due to his 'exemplary police duty record.'

Maybe we should all go to Hobby Lobby and pray that the union can save this guys job, secure his pension and maybe even a promotion is in order ?

After all, it was only some hobby supplies that he stole.

Another thought I've had after reading this.........Don't they make a police man/police woman place their hand on a bible and make a sworn oath to up hold ALL of the laws ? (Shame, Shame)

I wonder what he stole...? Could not be worth it...

Don't think I've ever seen anybody shoplift anything other than food that might be worth it...........and even then, that's only of they were so poor they could barely afford the wear and tear on their shoes to walk to the store!

Yes, an oath is sworn, but no Bible involved. The atheists and agnostics put a grinding halt to that part of the oath ceremony.

Many years ago I had to fire a guy for stealing coffee packets from the office. We had noticed that we were using way too much coffee, but didn't know where it was going (we thought the department next door was taking it when they ran out). One day I get a call from security that they have this guy in their office. He was walking out of the facility, reached into his jacket pocket for his car keys and dropped a few packs of coffee on the ground, right in front of a guard!

He was decent employee, and had a family so I went to bat for him in Human Resources. The head of HR fired him, and told me that with people who steal it's never just a one time thing. He said dishonesty and contempt for authority was a way of life, something in his psyche, and we just managed to catch him one time. So out the door he went.

In the next few weeks we noticed a lot of things changed in the office. We no longer were missing supplies, nobody had any of their personal tools go missing and sloppy things like the coffee area wasn't a big mess anymore, there were no longer snots flicked on the mens room wall over the urinals, and no more poo stains on the toilet seat! We could only conclude that all this was this one guy!

As said in this thread, there is no room for cops who steal. Some of them probably get a big 'above the law' feeling, but cops are held to a standard a step above the average citizen, because they are supposed to be upholding the law. Back in NJ there were two local cops who went to a break in call at a closed restaurant. They got caught with a few cases of frozen lobster tails in the trunk of the patrol car. Lobster tails / hobby supplies, no different!

I've seen good people do bad things and I've seen bad people do good things.

Last winter a guy walked into a Wendy's restaurant not far from my home, committed an armed robbery and made off with $1,400.00

He was caught right away. This spring when his trial was getting started the court system discovered that the $1,400.00 cash from the robbery that was being held in the evidence room at the Michigan State Police post in Cadillac, MI was missing.

http://www.9and10news.com/story/25758484/michigan-state-police-missing-money-from-evidence

THEN-when the State Police started an investigation into this matter, they found that there was close to 10 thousand dollars in cash missing from the same evidence room.

My all time favorite story on this subject: Two summers ago, one of our local sheriff deputy's was caught with a working methamphetamine lab going in his house. Seems this guy would drive over 100 miles away to buy his supply's . I guess nobody told him there was some type of registry kept on who was buying the key ingredients . That's how they caught him.

So he was either doing it himself, selling it to others (which I believe is illegal) or both-doing it AND selling it.

Just what we all need- a tweaked out (armed) sheriff deputy.

Actually, Tom, more than likely some of it was someone else.

others saw the consequences visited on the first guy, they abandoned their own petty little anti-authority proclivities. Happens a lot. As you know, it's called deterrence. And, it works.

Stealing from a "hobby store"

What's up with the quotations? Could people not grasp the fact of that there's a story for hobbies?

Police officer deserved to be fired/quit. Just because you have a badge, it doesn't put you over the law... just saying.

No one here has disagreed with that.

With todays technology , DNA swab samples could have been taken to conclude who the culprit was on that.

(Sorry for the quotation violation)

Makes me wonder how he thought he could possibly get away with it - with security cameras all over stores now plus detectors at the doors as well. Maybe his defense attorney will use that - "It was a cry for help, Your Honor."

Either that or "This was all a big misunderstanding. He was testing the security system, Your Honor."

I just finished putting the finishing touches to a theft case at a casino where I locked up three employees.

In each interview I ask what has become a standard question of mine. "Do you have any idea how many cameras are on you at any given time while you are working?"

The answer in each case was something like "Oh yeah, sure".

Really?

Works for me Dan! Ever see a mother in the store with two or three misbehaving kids, screaming "I'll kill you!" while the kids laugh at her. I always figured that if she actually did kill one, the other two would be towing the line! :)
