ChrisPflug Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I was fortunate enough to pick up an original 72 body chassis, and rear bumper for cheap- the original bumper is promo style and the body has screw posts (as well as being the proper width) allowing for easy, neat and properly aligned mounting
Snake45 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I agree, it does look 1000% better now, and your fine work deserved to have that part look right. Good for you, and model on!
bisc63 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 Kudos for taking the time to fix a "finished" model. It really looks THAT much better. Build some more Goats!
w451973 Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 That really makes a big difference. Maybe someone could cast and sell a new bumper since it's unlikely R2 will ever do anything about it.

Bob Ellis Posted October 7, 2014 Posted October 7, 2014 I thought about taking two slices out of the bumper. Probably will do that. If what is said is true, somebody redesigned the body over the years.

om617 Posted October 8, 2014 Posted October 8, 2014 Very nice GTO. Dont see this color often, nice choice.
Bob Ellis Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 I just checked an original 1971 GTO rear bumper on a '71 and on the new Round2 '72 GTO. It is absolutely true, the rear of the MPC GTO body shrunk. The bumper is still the same size. You must cut the bumper because in increasing the body size is impossible! Good call Snake
ShredHippie Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Definitely looks 100% better! Is the AMT 1972 GTO from 2004 this same kit, with the same problem?
Pim Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 Definitely looks 100% better! Is the AMT 1972 GTO from 2004 this same kit, with the same problem? Yes I have this exact kit that you are talking about and I have got the same problem
ChrisPflug Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 A couple years back there was a "corrected width" bumper available aftermarket- may have been Reliable
Bob Ellis Posted October 13, 2014 Posted October 13, 2014 On a new build, maybe slicing the trunk lines open an forcing a shim to make the rear wider like the original?
Bob Ellis Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) I sliced a recent '72 GTO at the trunk lines to spread the rear fenders outward. Unfortunately, has to be done before painting. But then, the bumper fits. This body does not have the original scripts. This is the result of being a NASCAR, modified and different year (1970 part deux) changing the tool. Samiches Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I have a MPC 70' GTO and one of the new released '72 kits in hand. The 1970 GTO bumper fits both kits well. The only issue is that it looks like the angle of the fender gap where the bumper goes needs a little bit of work. At least if you get a copy of the '70 GTO rear bumper, you don't have to cut it in half... I just checked Modelhaus, they have the '70 rear bumper for $6.75 + $5 S&H. The translucent taillights from the '72 kit fit the 1970 bumper.
