Through Tower the Rabbit is $19.95, and the Revell AG Golf GTi is $31.95. You will have to pay the higher AG price if you want a Cabriolet, as that's not getting reboxed here.

After a debacle of warped Ferraris and Audis that I have personally suffered through, I will always pay the AG "surcharge" to get a kit packaged as designed, rather than pancaked into one of our smaller boxes.

Looking at the photo of the Revell Monogram version of the GTi, and looking at the sprues for the Revell Ag version, the sprue that has the bumpers on (Sprue P) only has the bumpers and a few other parts, the Cabrio parts sprue lay out is totally different, so with a different set of bumpers, and some decals for the side marker lights looks like the VW Rabbit will be a goer ...

Hmmm. That blue one looks a plain US spec Rabbit from around 77-78. They went to rectangular headlights in the US in 79, I think...

The black wheelarch extensions are wrong for a basic Rabbit, so it's the Euro GTI shell I'd imagine, the wheelarches are frosted so you have a line to paint/mask up to.

The extra clear bits in the Cabrio could possibly be used as side marker lights I guess, but with no mounting points, they won't look fantastic which could explain why they look photoshopped onto the test model. The US bumpers look fine though.

So parts 206, 207, 208, 211, 212 & 215, on the clear tree for example, are not US spec side marker lights?!

Wait 'till the US box kit, is on the store shelves, then buy, lay out the parts and study the instructions, please!

Just had another GTi arrive this morning, before it went into the stash pile I took the body out and had a good look at it, and yes there are flashed over holes inside the body on the front wing and rear quarter panel, and four clear "Marker lights" included on the sprue marked "Parts not to be used" and as the bumpers are on a sprue of their own (Sprue P) it looks like the Rabbit will be a goer, but not the Cabriolet, which doesn't have the flashed over holes on the body.

I'm going to be casting some of the parts from the Cabriolet kit, wheels, dash, centre console and seats, so I can turn one of my GTi kits into a lower spec Golf, shouldn't be too hard to remove the wheel arch trims as there very faint anyway.

No Irish plates for the RHD version either! LOL

You could always use the one's in there for the "Mainland" Shay .....

There's a big rocket heading for Hargrave Rd. Geoff :P

I just got the GTi to review for the Dutch IPMS, but one thing I am missing is a chrome-sprue. The Trabant also didn't had a chrome sprue and I would've liked to see a chrome sprue for headlights, tailights and mirrors and stuff.

BMF to the rescue .....

I don't remember who posted this photo but it was on this forum.
I think the parts look correct, (other than the box art stating it's a rabbit when w/the body had the GTI flares), and the NA Revell kit looks great.

Hi Guys,

I've always liked VW Golfs so I am looking forward to building these kits. I saw them built up on the Revell stand at Scale Model World in Telford last November and they looked really nice.

The GTI is a very early Mk1 (as evidenced by the dashboard and tail-lights) whereas the cabriolet can be built to represent a later car due to the dashboard and the fact that their tail-lights didn't change when Volkswagen gave the first Golf a facelift. I think it would be quite easy to kit bash the dashboard from the cabriolet to the GTI but the rear light clusters would be a challenge. I should imagine the aftermarket will be producing some parts for these models so maybe someone will offer a kit to make a facelifted Golf - this would then open up the opportunity to build the later versions of the car.

I didn't know that these kits did not have a chrome sprue - looks like it'll be Alclad for me when I get one!

the "great" differents between sedan and convertible is the year of production.

-> the sedan (GTI) is the first decade of mark I Golf, means, it has Chrome bumpers (but no chromeparts in the box!), another Dashboard (round instrumenthouses), steering wheel and those black "wheelshousecovers" (<- dont know, what they called) on the Body.

-> the Cabrio is the second decade of mark I Golf, means it has the black bumpers, new Dashboard (cube instrumenthouse) and not the molded "wheelhousecovers"

I dont know, what sprues they put in to the Rabbit!

Like the new tooled beetle, ROG should think about sell them not as "California Wheels" as they do (if the cover is above right). On the cover, it is not the GTI-Body with those black "wheelhousecover" and i am not sure, they molded the sedan without it.

It would be easier, to call it "European Line" or something like that. in fact, then you know what you get and it dont needed riddles, whats in the box, is it european or american spec.

i think, we should wait till one of you guys get one and open it to take a look inside the box. all other will be make riddles.

for interests, here are two links how they could look - dont Forget, tey are european specs!:

"out of the box" - Sedan GTI >Golf I GTI<

modified Sedan Looks like a Basic Golf >1975 Golf GL<

And thats, whats in the box in Germany:

>Golf I GTI<

>Golf I Cabriolet<

After looking at the pics of the parts etc., I still say that except for the euro spec bumpers, it's a pretty accurate representation of a Canadian spec '79 GTi. The early Canadian GTis were built in Germany, not the USA.

I had a base model 4dr '79 Rabbit back in the mid '80s and it used the same engine as the Canadian GTis , looks exactly the same engine as on the parts tree in the pics.

Also, since Canadian VW dealers stocked the euro spec parts, it was possible [though I've never seen one] that a Canadian Rabbit could have been refit with all the euro GTi parts.

Maybe instead of marketing it as a "California Wheels" kit it should have been a "Vancouver Wheels" kit. LOL :P

I'll be doing one of my GTi's in a colour that was introduced in 1979, just before the facelift, Inari Silver metallic, not a common colour, but I think it suits the Golf

Interesting colour Geoff - I wasn't aware of that one. How did you find out about it? That looks like a good example of a Mk1 Golf, where did you get the photo?

I used to work for Audi/V.W U.K(VAG) back in the 80's and 90's

That was actually a common enough colour for them over here when I was a kid.

I didn't think the Golf was that old, I always thought you had these when you were a kid

That would explain your knowledge Geoff! We'll have to get together to have a chat one of these days.

Yes, it's been sometime since we've caught up with each other ....
