Dave Van Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 BUT........if you went back to 1968 and told your buddy that those flip open communicators you saw on Star Trek last night would be in everybody's hands by year 2000...... that not only could you talk to anyone anywhere, take photos or movies.......they'd say you were crazy!!! Then tell them that most people only used them to type messages and take photos of their lunch burger and not to TALK to each other.......and locked up you would be!!!!!!
Harry P. Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 The latest trend is that phones are getting bigger. Remember just a few years ago, they were making a big deal about how the latest and greatest cell phone is smaller than the previous one. Now, the TV commercials show how much bigger the iphone 6 is compared to the last one! What's old is new again. Or what goes around, comes around. Or something like that...

Apple made a commercial when they introduced the iPhone5, bashing how absurdly big the Samsung Note II was. Now they are praising the large size, it's retarded. I have the NoteIII. It's the same size as the new iPhone 6 mega or whatever. It is amazing. I use every feature on it for work. It has a one-handed operation mode that shrinks everything to the corner of your choice so you can easily operate with one hand. The reason I like the big phone is I use a stylus all the time and constantly showing clients pictures and looking at price sheets. Some people think it's stupid, but it has been exactly what I've needed.

Now everyone is watching their favorite shows and sports. I remember in 96 2 hours of airtime was around 60- 70 bucks...

Ace-Garageguy Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 (edited) Anybody old enough to remember Dick Tracy's "two-way wrist TV", circa 1964? Edited October 9, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
thatz4u Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 Anybody old enough to remember Dick Tracy's "two-way wrist TV", circa 1964? I do, tv cartoon & newspaper comics, I'm gettin' old
Snake45 Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 (edited) The SNL skit that had the 'in' phone that was the size of a quarter!!!! I just saw the one the other night that had Lisa and Todd "dialing for toast in the push-button world of the future." NOW how much stuff can you control with your phone? Ace-Garageguy Posted October 9, 2014 Posted October 9, 2014 NOW how much stuff can you control with your phone? The relationship between time and space? The IRS? Women? Ebola? I give up.
Snake45 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 The relationship between time and space? The IRS? Women? Ebola? I give up. So, in other words, nothing REALLY important. I don't own a cell phone, have never owned one, and don't want one. If you want to talk to me, you have to catch me at home. And awake. And without the Bose noise-canceling headphones on. Good luck with that.
Mike_G Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I don't have a cell phone, laptop, tablet, MP3 player, or cable/satellite TV. I'm kind of a semi-Luddite, LOL
Quick GMC Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Anybody old enough to remember Dick Tracy's "two-way wrist TV", circa 1964? Yeah they have those now. The Samsung watch. My business partner bought one. Reminds me of having a calculator watch on 2nd grade
Snake45 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I don't have a cell phone, laptop, tablet, MP3 player, or cable/satellite TV. I'm kind of a semi-Luddite, LOL I have cable TV, but I'm still using a VCR with it. I don't have an MP3 player but I play them on my desktop computer.
Snake45 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Anybody old enough to remember Dick Tracy's "two-way wrist TV", circa 1964? Yeah. And I think I remember someone marking a version of that, which was actually just a small transistor radio. Anyone remember transistor radios? My first one was bigger than a pack of cigarettes. AM only of course. Last week I bought a pocket radio about the size of a cigarette lighter (the disposable kind) with FM in it. And I think it cost less than my first transistor did, too, even after 50 years of inflation.
Mike_G Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I have cable TV, but I'm still using a VCR with it. I have a working BETA machine

There must be some kind of market for them; I was in Radio Shack the other day (it was an accident, I swear! ), and found what I would consider to be a transistor radio in stock, even though this one has that new-fangled FM gadget: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3705831 I was surprised, to say the least.
Snake45 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I have a working BETA machine Where do you get tapes for it? I'm glad every time I go to Walmart and they still have a few blank VHS in stock. Wasn't all THAT long ago they had an entire aisle of blank VHS tapes of all sorts.
Tom Geiger Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 (edited) A consultant came into the office this week with one of these.. it's a Pico overhead projector... well, you see the size. It's about the same size as my GPS. We all want one! Figure it will be built into the Iphone 7 or 8 Edited October 10, 2014 by Tom Geiger
Dave Van Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I still have some Atlantic Emerson Lake and Palmer 8 tracks......they were molded in bright PINK.......it was claimed that was to deter bootleggers......
Ace-Garageguy Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I'm still using most of the music storage and playback formats there ever were...reel-to-reel tape, vinyl (even some 78 RPM shellac-resin records), cassette, CD and several digital audio file formats. Due to the age and range of my music collection they all have a place, and as long as I can still access information in the older formats, I don't see any good reason to dump them. BUT, I'm continually fascinated by the growing capabilities of hand-held devices, and the staggering computing power of something so small.
Snake45 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 I only have LP, cassette, and CD format music. Couple years ago The Lovely Mrs. Snake got me a USB turntable for Christmas so I can put any of my old LP albums in the computer and then burn them onto CDs or put them on an MP3 player (if I ever get one). I had a lot of fun with that thing!
High octane Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 If everything fits in ones pocket, why do many people car backpacks today? They're not all going camping, are they?
Snake45 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 If everything fits in ones pocket, why do many people car backpacks today? They're not all going camping, are they? I don't mind backpacks, but people pulling around giant purses on wheels drive me nuts. If you can't pick it up and carry it, you're carrying around too much stuff, sweetie.
Rob Hall Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 If everything fits in ones pocket, why do many people car backpacks today? They're not all going camping, are they? I use one when I go to work to carry my laptop, iPod, notebook, misc stuff like snacks, etc
