mustang1989 Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Thank you Dan! Will be working in the engine compartment again today. Hope to get this wrapped up at some point so I can move on. lol Well I spent an hour this morning spinning my wheels. It was my first time simulating washer fluid in the w/s washer reservoir. I do have the concept down and while I'm not striving for the unreachable goal of perfection, I am striving for the "acceptable" range. I'll have to start over with it as I spent more time trying to repair it than I did just scrapping the "progress" and starting over. Will be stripping it off tomorrow morning and hopefully give it another whirl Thursday. Dangit! Edited January 13, 2015 by mustang1989
mustang1989 Posted January 13, 2015 Author Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Well I’ll start by saying that this build has totally changed direction from what it started out as. When I started this thing back in the first part of November I thought I was going to simply paint a replacement hood , replace a missing rear spoiler, replace a missing master cylinder and touch up here and there and it all be a done deal by Christmas time. I can tell you now here on the 13th of January that………did NOT happen!!! This build / rebuild has taken me down a road that I have never been down and encountering issues I’ve never dealt with in the world of modeling. So far I’ve met a lot of good people along the way and have developed not only new skill sets but have gained some friends along the way. I still have a couple of months to go with this and am looking forward to getting to know folks on this site better and hopefully contribute something back in return for the friendly help that I’ve gotten so far. In short it’s just a word of gratitude to all who have helped me out along the way here and to halfway explain myself as to the turn of direction with this build from what started out as a “touch-up” to a full blown re-construction event. You guys are da bomb, Joe Edited January 13, 2015 by mustang1989
Mopar - D Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Thanks Joe you have provided a lot of good detail on how to do some very fine detail work. Looking forward to seeing more of yor work.
slusher Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 incredible detail Joe. Keep up the good work friend, I am enjoying watching your work....
mustang1989 Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 Ok I didn't do Jack you know what this morning due to having the crud! One day of backwards progress ...er...regress and one day of no progress. I've gotta get busy!!!!
mustang1989 Posted January 14, 2015 Author Posted January 14, 2015 Ok folks. I just couldn't leave the molded in windshield washer reservoir in there. 1.) I couldn't do much with the forward part of the reservoir due to the close quarters. Here I have the concept of the w/s washer fluid down but the application............well.........sucked! and 2.) because I have a second kit of this all molded in white I wanted a the white plastic water bottle "look". Sooooo.. We cut it from the other kit and trim things up a bit ...and walah! A donor bottle.. Then we cut the original bottle from the fender and clean things up here a bit.......... and test fit..... This all may seem a little extreme but it didn't take me all that long to do and I feel a little more confident in my graphing skills than my close quarter painting skills. Still gotta apply the bright blue for the w/s washer fluid and hit 'er with a coat of flat with a drop or two of white in it for that fluid inside bottle effect. Hopefully will be back at the bench tomorrow. I ended up coming home early and this was bugging me so much and I was still under medication and feeling up to this ...so I took advantage of it.
mustang1989 Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) I have some clean up to do around this general area, paint the cap and position and glue the reservoir in but here's the windshield washer reservoir with "fluid" in it. Edited January 15, 2015 by mustang1989
taaron76 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Joe, you need to fill that reservoir up. lol Nice job! Tim
mustang1989 Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Thanks Tim and Dan! Hopefully I can get this part of it finished up pretty quick. After that I'll be focusing on the master cylinder.
landman Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Re. the master cylinder: are you going to have the lines and brake light pressure switch?
mustang1989 Posted January 15, 2015 Author Posted January 15, 2015 Re. the master cylinder: are you going to have the lines and brake light pressure switch? LOL! Brake lines=yes. Brake light pressure switch=no. Brake reservoir cap retainer=yes.
Lunajammer Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I don't know if I admire you or feel sorry for you, but I envy you. You have skills and patience so high it's in an area I don't aspire to go to. So I'll just watch, marvel and take notes. Lots of great tutorials you're offering us. Thanks for bringing something we can all benefit from. This is my favorite photo. I should hang it over my bench to use as both a motivation and a warning about modeling.
Belugawrx Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 Hey Joe Following along,..and you're doing excellent detail work! Don't want to break your roll, but,... Could you show us how you do your hose clamps?,,maybe in tips and tricks? They look really nice.... Carry On Cheers

Thanks for bringing something we can all benefit from. Dang Mike I dunno what to say except thanks for such a compliment (and the laugh). I do feel like you all here have largely benefited me. I may take what I see and twist it into an idea that will work especially if I lack the tools or skill set that I don't currently have yet. My goal during a build is simple: I compete with only myself and my past work to get better than I was before. If I happen to bring something to the table that somebody can use then that's a good thing but make no mistake, it is all of you good folks here who are helping me. Thanks pal, Joe Edited January 16, 2015 by mustang1989

mustang1989 Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Great Detailing Joe! Thanks Ira! Well today's update will be in the master cylinder area as mentioned previously. I got a piece of that copper wire from the fuel pump relay donor and went to work. Although it's unpainted, here's the results, Still a little tweaking to do but there for the most part. I'll be painting this and finishing it off late today or tomorrow morning. It took about 3 different tries to get it this far. Brake lines are next and then the brake booster vacuum fitting and line.
impcon Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 WOW!! Incredible detail, to say the least. I'm learning a lot from your work and getting some ideas for future builds. We really do get drawn in with wanting more and more detail as our building skills improve but I've not seen many on this forum who are as passionate about detail as you are and can put practice to the test like you can. I am so looking forward to seeing what you are going to continue to do to this car and thank you for your thoughtful sharing of your talents.
Mopar - D Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Joe nice work on the master brake cyinder. What do you use to bend your wire ?
mustang1989 Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Thanks Gary and Dan! I'm just used to working in 1/48 scale and don't get this opportunity to detail this much and have enjoyed it so far. I miniature long needle nose pliers and PE benders to bend all the wire.
mustang1989 Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Well it's looking like I might have made some head way today. I got ready to paint the retainer this morning and had it held in my forceps and "bliiiiiing!" . It went sailing off into the " wild brown yonder " of my carpet!! Oh well I just made another one. Around 20 minutes later I was back where i had started and painted it up. While I was at it I directed my attention to the brake booster check valve. It took me a little bit to think and come up with an idea but I think I've got it. I started with a bobby pin and cut the head off of it. Then I painted it up and installed it into the hole that I drilled yesterday in the brake booster. Here we are today with the check valve and the retainer installed and all painted up. I still have to brush a little gloss on the valve to replicate a plastic look but you get the idea................ Brake lines tomorrow.
om617 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Wow lot of attention to detail, great job. I tried to fix up one of these but it`s merely a joke compared to this.
Mopar - D Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Joe your work is incredible. Thanks for the information on making the small wire bends.
freakshow12 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 To be correct there are about 4 different color finishes on the master cylinder setup. Some restorations show it all black but that's not quite accurate. Booster should be semi gloss black, resivoir should be an iron grey, cap should be a anodized gold and the cap clip silver. Some cars the check valve is white, some painted and on these cars there is a round orange paint daub above the check valve on the booster if you really wanna get serious. My recommendation is if you are not going to do all the paint daubs and chalk mArks throughout the car don't do any. I tend to do them on my mudtang and torino builds but I know the cars inside out through my other more expensive hobby so it's easy for me lol
