slusher Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Body is looking great Joe. Keep those updates coming..
mustang1989 Posted February 19, 2015 Author Posted February 19, 2015 Thanks Bruce and Carl! The encouragement is much appreciated. I painted up the inside rearview mirror black this morning. I'm waiting on that to cure out and then I'll seal it with a semi-gloss clear. After that I'll apply the BMF to the "mirror glass". One thing that I did happen to overlook was two engine bay decals. Since this is a "re-build" and not a from the box build (technically speaking) I have not looked at the instruction sheet on the classic kit boxing. I noticed, as I was looking for anything I may have missed, at the instruction sheet finally that there are two decals one of which goes on the L/H inner fender and the other on the radiator core support. Anyways, I applied them and it added to the detail I have there. I'm happy with the results.
Mopar - D Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Nice update Joe. The little decals look great!
johnbuzzed Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 That is looking better every day. One little detail that you might want to add is the stud from the front shock; it comes up through the round or hex pad on top of the shock tower. Drill a hole, add a small length of wire and you have a detail that is often overlooked. If you really want to get involved, use a photo-etched washer and hex "nut", too.
mustang1989 Posted February 19, 2015 Author Posted February 19, 2015 Thanks Dan and John! As far as the stud goes, thanks for bringing that to my attention and you're right. I'm going to get right on that stud and I have the perfect thing to use. I'll get to that later.....heh heh.
microwheel Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Nice touch on the decal work Joe. And nice save to find that ya needed em lol. I had a little save of my own today, with a parts box AC radiator I had painted up to go in the vette, and then found I forgot to put it on the car before assembling the body and chassis. Good thing I had to do some work that required removing the hood this morning or I would have never seen it was missing.
mustang1989 Posted February 19, 2015 Author Posted February 19, 2015 I saw that Jim. LOL Good catch for you too!
Mopar - D Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Joe are you ok ? Just checking I think this may be the first day with out a update.
mustang1989 Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) Lee: LOL! I haven't seen a reply like that before! LOL! Carl: Thanks again buddy! Dan: I know man. I actually did work on it this morning but haven't had time to post anything all day. This whole adoption thing is quite involved with house inspections, fingerprinting, meeting with the adoption rep and all that. Plus my computer got a freekin' virus today that I spent the whole day chasing out of it!!!! I almost took a flippin' bat to it!! I took a picture of the headlight lenses before working them over. Whoever invented this design for model headlights should be kicked right square in the butt I'll tell ya that! Here's before: I had some additional troubles today in the fact that the first headlight I was re-working "flicked" off into the wild blue freekin' wonder somewhere while I was sanding it. Great! I continued onwards, however , with headlight #2. After sanding and trimming I noticed a black speck in the clear molding of the light just suspended there in the clear..........You gotta be freekin' kiddin' here! So I robbed some more headlamps from my spare kit and proceeded on. I then found the first headlight on my bench ....whew!!! And cleaned up the remaining headlamps and replaced the one with the speck in it. They all look like this now...... They are all drying now after I applied some future on the lens faces. More pics tomorrow. Edited February 21, 2015 by mustang1989
mustang1989 Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) Thanks Lee: All I did was cut the stud off, file it down flush, clean up the edges and break out the sanding sticks starting with a medium grit and worked my way to 6000 on the back side and then applied Future. Here's how they all look right now cleaned up and with the Future applied. Randy D Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Hi Joe, Decals and your foil work really came out nice Randy
taaron76 Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Joe - Did you sleep last night? lol Great tip on the head lights! I never really thought about applying future or clear over them to make 'em look like glass. Sweet! Tim
mustang1989 Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 (edited) Thank you Randy! Tim: That's an easy question...............I don't sleep! Really though I get between 3 and 6 hours of sleep a night and usually an hour nap during the day. My dogs man.....my dogs! Everybody: I did manage to get the doors drilled for the mirrors(which this original body never saw the installation of), the pins cut to length and the mirrors installed as well this morning. I also BMF'd the windshield wipers on the glass assy. Here's the pics of the mirrors secured in place. I still have to play around with the camera a bit so I can bring out more red. This thing is a lot more red than this. Edited February 21, 2015 by mustang1989
Mopar - D Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Joe glad to see you back. Your head light lens look good now with your detailing and the mirrors came out perfect. Congratulation on your adoption I adoped my daughter 22 years ago. Sorry to hear about your computer ever since I swicthed to Apple I've not had any viruses.
tbill Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Joe, keep rolling along buddy, looks great. I must say, as much as I look forward to seeing this done, I will be a bit sad not seeing updates after it is done. heck of a project for a 'quickie' rebuild
mustang1989 Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 Tim: No but I know where the problem is now. Dan: Thanks for the good word on the adoption. We are still in the process of the whole thing but we are making headway. Tom: Thanks for the encouragment good buddy. I'm glad you brought that up because I'm going to miss posting out here in the mainstream when this build is done. My next build will be a Messerschmitt Bf109G-6 in 1/48 scale (my scale of choice). I may see if the mods and the peeps around here will allow me to start a thread on the DB605 engine build portion around here because that part is its own kit. I'm gonna have a complete blast with that one! I do have plans on either a 66 Barracuda or Little Red Wagon build coming up though.
taaron76 Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Joe - If it helps, I usually take about 100 photos and only wind up using 5-8. lol I take them with different settings, lighting, exposure, flash compensation, etc... You know when you find the one you want. Trial and error I guess. Looking great! Tim
mustang1989 Posted February 22, 2015 Author Posted February 22, 2015 I hear you on that Tim. I'd say about 30% of my time at the bench is made up of photography. The right angles, the right lighting, ensuring the colors are there , that the model is free of the junk that I recently had in my photos (plastic drill shavings, dust.............dog hairs and the like removed from the scene!!) and all that stuff. I installed the window assy this morning. Speaking of photos , there aint any yet but will more than likely be by end of day today.
slusher Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 More great work Joe. I need some advice. What did you hold the headlights with while you filed them.? How do you file the back Joe? What you did with the headlight lens is great I want to try it sometime friend...
