1930fordpickup
I'm pretty sure that I now have the 426 Hemi down low enough to clear the Dart's flat hood (after shaving down the intake manifold where the carbs sit, sanding the carbs down, scratch-building flat air cleaners, removing the engine side of the motor mounts, shaving down the chassis side of the motor mounts, notching them for the headers and thinning the tranny cross-member). I'm not sure about ground clearance now (the headers and the oil pan now hang down awfully low), but one problem at a time. Maybe I'll get lucky and it will be okay as-is................. Maybe go with a dry sump oil pan and injection on top for the lower hood.
georgeshaeffer
More work on the Hemi Dart's chassis today indicates that the motor DOES clear the flat hood (just barely) and that there will be sufficient ground clearance, but I have some modifications to make to front cross member to clear the front of the oil pan - a simple and painless alteration. I was also surprised to find that I have to alter the rear wheels and the rear axle to get the simple steelie wheels to fit under the chassis/body properly. It's already done, but I'm still figuring out how to strengthen the rear wheel attachment. Not a big issue, just noodling it a bit. I have a few ideas........ I don't think I have any problem with the front wheels (they are shallower), but I'm sure I can deal with it if a problem arises here too. Next up, after making sure that the chassis all works and fits properly, will be to start on the body's rust damage.
bill_67
Great builds happening on this thread, but no much happening on mine. Through the whole month of march the only thing I accomplished was getting the engine wired.
TFchronos
My monthly address is as follows. Still don't have an entry so no progress has been made. Going through kind of a building slump right now, I've got stuff I wanted to do but seem to have lost that creative spark to build (probably the allergies causing it, I hope). But on a better note I did pickup a junkyard Viper for suspension and "maybe" engine idk, it's missing the top half and I'm torn between putting 10 cylinders or 8 cylinders in the bay. Great work with your builds guys!
Guest
Made a little progress on my Escort. I gave the body a final sanding and shot some Dupli Color "Hot Rod" Gray on it. Right away, I see that both drip rails are going to have to be sanded off and replaced. Both sides have a wonky looking area above the doors. Paint will be Tamiya Light Gunmetal with either a dull or semi gloss finish. I also primered the chassis and engine/transmission. I did some paint on the engine and transmission along with the wheels. I have a plan to cover them until after the CBP is over.

Grid_88
Well I have run out of steam on the 57 ford so I am going to be switching vehicles to this. And I will be using the chassis and drive train from the 99 mustang SVT cobra. And with about a half hour of cutting and measuring I got this. And with some of the suspension components it looks like it will fit but the chassis will need to be extended to make the wheel base the same. and close up of the front suspension showing how far the chassis needs to be extended. I am thinking of gunmetal gray or plain silver exterior with a two tone gray interior for colors. And for teasers a shot of the engine in place. chunkypeanutbutter
I'm back! The Scout is here again! Bed wall is in! Two roof bars are in, and the bed surrounds are, as well. Bed surrounds are 5/32" I-beams, square rod along the bed wall is .060 x .060, and the roof bars are 1/16" rod. Bed wall is made of For Sale sign styrene. Primer is Rustoleum Dark Grey automotive primer. It has just enough cr-ppy-looking spots to please me. Engine that should be going into it is a 409 with triple carbs and finned covers. Rescued it from the parts box the other day and painted it.
chunkypeanutbutter
After smoothing the black primer, I painted it again with Rustoleum Rusty Metal primer. Looks really heavy in a lot of spots. I may just strip it and paint it one color on bare plastic, like I usually do.
chunkypeanutbutter
Right after my last post, I went digging for a gallon Ziplock bag to throw the Scout in with some Purple Power. The only one I could find had a little hole in it, so I had to limit my time with the paint stripping. The Scout languished in the purple pond for a good hour or so while I played Minecraft. Went back to it, and scrubbed most of the paint off. It took most (if not all) of the brown paint off, and some of the black primer. With bare plastic, black paint, brown paint, and blue paint showing, it got a really cool look, like it had been burned out or something. I took the opportunity to add rust powder... chalk pastel. Touched up the trim with a silver paint marker, as well. I'm leaving the red and white part of the For Sale sign on the back wall. It just really looks like a big salvaged piece of metal the guy used to make this custom cab wall over a weekend or something.
chunkypeanutbutter
And, to round out the night, front suspension is in. Thank you, Revell Firebird. This certainly makes putting the engine in easier. What's left to do: - Windshield - Dashboard - Seats - Find the grille - Make a hood or get one - Make some paint cans and brushes for the bed, also general junk - Dry-transfer lettering - Wheels need to be painted - New shifter plate and shifter - Make leaf springs for back and attach to Model T rear axle (yes, seriously)

Some people have spent days getting a body to look that weathered , and so good.
DeeCee
I have a small update, have not touched it for a while, as i have a couple of builds on the go. To get interested again, i started by playing with the wheels again, so i did the Ferrari outer sleeve red, and slipped the chromies back in, it disguises the size a bit more, and adds that red wall look. and working on a diff set-up, as there is zero room for the independent rear. georgeshaeffer
RE: The Hemi Dart - It took some major surgery on the front cross member and I had to flatten the bottom of the oil filter some, but the front suspension is now on the chassis. A test mock-up shows that the carbs clear the hood on top and the oil pan & headers are well off the ground on the bottom. Time to start practicing rust effects on that old spare body I've got lying around! Edited April 21, 2015 by georgeshaeffer
chunkypeanutbutter
Thanks for the kind words, guys! Nearly there now! This is most certainly not completely realistic... but I display my models right side up, and when someone does look underneath, I want at least a little representation of realism. Rear suspension parts are from the Revell '94 Impala SS. That kit disgusted me. Even at the $15 I paid for it (my birthday money, mind you) I felt ripped off; of blatantly snap-kit origin. Enough complaints! Getting a perfect stinkbug stance here! I want it this way just so it has a little air of custom under all the dilapidation. During the drying periods (and the blank periods of my mental capacity on the truck) I've been working on this companion trailer. Made from a Ford pickup bed and some Evergreen stock. A piece of diamond plate from a big rig and some flat sheet comprise the toolbox on the front, and the frame and yoke are made of 5/32" I-beam. The axle (not pictured) is a simple rod connecting two steel wheels with a straw on the outside. Yes, the trailer will roll! (The truck won't, but, things in their own time...) Planned wheels for the Scout will be either grimy steel wheels or equally grimy chrome wheels from the Ford Flareside kit. Tires will be of the Goodyear Custom Wide Tread Polyglas variety. chunkypeanutbutter
(nearly) All the stuff needed to finish this up... Probably will find more junk to go into it. The little bottle is a NOS bottle, which will go in the engine compartment. The box hasn't decided on what it'll be yet. The bike will most likely come along for the ride. chunkypeanutbutter
Painted steel wheels it is! Speaking of paint, I just painted the trailer and the dashboard. Of course I notice the trailer axle is crooked after painting it... Bumps in the road.
