Belugawrx Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Oh......... Uhhh... Geez.... I thought this was the existentialism group.
gtx6970 Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 Referring to automotive modeling specifically, for me it's a couple of reasons; nostalgia being one, creating a nice looking kit of a vehicle I'll never be able to afford is another. Same here. I built model cars when I was a kid ( I've been a gear head my entire life) And have always liked the drag cars from that time. Thus my collection is what it is today
Erik Smith Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I've always had a fascination with miniatures. Ships, cars, dioramas - I just like looking at them. Cars just happen to my choice for modeling. I relish the creative aspects of envisioning something and then producing it - I'd do it on a larger scale of I had the time, skill, space, and money - but I have none, so it's models for me.
johnbuzzed Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 (edited) I have intentions of building every kit that I have as well as finishing every project that I have started. My kit purchases have slowed down a lot in the past couple of years, for a couple of reasons; I'll go with what floats my boat and pass on the kit that ..."is the greatest since (fill in the blank) and we have to buy them or the manufacturers won't make anymore kits!" Ergo, my collection slowly builds as I build slowly. I think my driving force is the need to create and this is my way of doing so; it also keeps me in touch with the 10-year-old in this 59-year-old container. It's a continuum; a feeling that, as long as I build, I'll keep going. Edited January 12, 2015 by johnbuzzed
High octane Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 I'm in this hobby today for a few reasons, the first is carried over from when I was building models back in the 50's and so on. Then I'm also a car person, which I picked up on my own, I also get satisfaction when completing a model car kit and putting it in my display case, and of course the camaraderie that comes with meeting other builders and sharing ideas over the many years.
oldcarfan Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 For me it is both nostalgia and an outlet for creativity. If I had the money and skills I would be building the same things except with 1 to 1 cars.
drive4th Posted January 12, 2015 Posted January 12, 2015 i've worked on cars all my life, can't get enough of it. But building real cars in real life is really freaking expensive. I started the hobby so i could 'build my dream garage' in scale. and then maybe pick the best one and build it in reality so, i guess you could say "i'm building for my collection"... YEEEAAAHHHHHH!!
dartman Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I guess you could call me a collector but I buy to eventually build. My buy to build ratio is way off. All told I have upwards of 500 kits.I also like to get kits I couldent have as a kid.
DeeCee Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) I have built model cars for 35 years, i like the challenge of building a kit like nobody else has built it, the box always goes in the bin, coz its just a box, with someone else s suggestion on it. I am also a 1:1 car guy, I also love to paint, but it is way to expensive to respray my 1:1 every couple of years. so it gives me even more ideas of what i can do on the real stuff. AND I LOVE IT!!! StevenGuthmiller Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 LOL. ..I had to laugh! Mike_G said he was in it for the chicks...thanks for the laugh. Sounds like as good a reason as any.I'm in this hobby cause I loved it...all aspects of is hobby.and its just...FUN!.. I get the impression that "my chick" would just as soon have me doing laundry & cooking on the weekends instead of hiding out in my shop! But she does concede, it's better than hanging out at the girlie bars! Steve
moparfarmer Posted January 14, 2015 Posted January 14, 2015 If I'am able to build again like I want, I do it for fun and relaxation...To get rid of the stress..I collected some but now at my age I'am moving some stock..Did some in the summer, some of my old stuff to another guy who collects..He also bought some of the new released stuff(10-15 yr old stuff) to sell at the flea market he attends..I got my money and he get his..We are both happy..Building for me is relaxation/stress releiver/fun..
Cliff Dagger Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I build anything from the mid 70's to mid 80's , that's my favorite era of anything Cars , music, movies etc... So when I'm working on a 1980 Bronco listening to Motley Crue , with a Hunter DVD on the TV it's 1982 agin for me. I also have this weird thing were I look at something and think about how it would look in different colors , model kits are a great way to have 20 1980 Ford Broncos each in a different color .
Lucas van H Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 I build, mostly because with the very limited funds and at the moment not so limited time I can dream up and build cars to my liking. Doesn't matter if it's an import, European high performance or classic American car because, well, I like cars . The bit I like the most is that if something doesn't work like you planned, you think up ways to make it work and it wouldn't cost alot of time in comparison to full scale.
Drake69 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Because my therapist said it would help get rid of the voices inside my head. Now it only tells me to build more model cars rather than going on killing sprees. In all seriousness, I got my love of model cars and real cars from my dad, and he taught me all the things he knew about modelling. So I guess I'd consider mine hereditary.
