55/57 Cameo build W.I.P.

Recommended Posts

This is my first time doing a build thread so thank you for all the inspiration and advice on this site. Thank you for taking the time to check it out and I am always open to advice and comments.

I started with a AMT '55 Cameo kit and then changed the bed out with a '57 Cameo for a little more styling. The frame and suspension components I designed on the computer and had 3D printed.

Tuck Trends magazine out of Japan did a photo shoot and article on the chassis.

The truck was then sectioned about 2" to scale through the mid section below the belt line at the cab and across the bottom of the bed sides.

It is a subtle mode but I think gets the look I was going for.

Next the front inner fenders were removed for added clearance.

I then used some styrene sheets and squadron putty to shave the back of cab and body work the section.

Door Handles and some emblems were then shaved and first of many coats of primer sprayed on the cab.

I then swapped out the hood for a 57 hood and shaved the emblem and body worked the bed sides from the section as well as shaving the mid section of the rear bumper and sectioned and shaved the tailgate. I also did not like how Cameo factory bedsides don't align flush with the sides of the cab so I then sectioned the bed from front to back to bring in the sides for a better fit and alignment more like a 58-59 Apache bed.

Superb work Andy! One thing I'll mention, more for people watching than for you since you seem to have your bases more than covered!

Note that on this kit, the interior bucket doesn't fill out the width of the chassis. AMT neglected to add in the step down, so you can see up into the body at the sides and back of the cab. I had made a simple floor piece for my builds of this kit.

My thoughts so far....wicked, killer, bad-a$$, this is gonna be one awesome truck!

What have you got planned for color?

I am going to be spraying the truck in a couple greens with pearl white accents and lace work on the roof.

Wow, this is fast becoming a masterpiece..... ...... You do great bodywork, to compliment the 3D chassis and parts, hope you keep the wheel / tyre combo ( are they Astro Supremes ? ) Really looking forward to more Andy, thanks for posting...... Lowlife ! !

Yes I am keeping the Astro Supremes on this build.

Thank you for all the comments and positive feedback. I really appreciate the input. More pics to update the build coming hopefully today or this evening.

More done. Decided to also go with the 57 grill and opened it up for some depth. and then sectioned the rear bumper end caps to fit under the tail lights. Sent the parts out for fresh chrome and waiting for them to return.

Also added the finned '55 Buick drums.

Opened up the firewall and shaved engine compartment side to make room for the 409.

Added some recessed bed side panels to give it some lines as I thought the bed box was a little plain on this truck.

Final motor mock up and added the Cadi air cleaner before finally getting to start paint.

I used all House of Kolor paints. The motor and running gear and interior all went a custom greenish gold mix. I am really pleased with the color so far.

Really liking the look of the motor against the shaved firewall.

Adding some detail to the valve covers, oil pan bolts and of course some striping on the pan and bell housing thanks to my buddy at Kustoms Inc.

First coat of color laid down. Round two and clear to come. Very happy with the color contrast to the frame color even before clear.

While waiting for clear to set it was a good time to start installing some suspension at the rear. Tonight the chassis and suspension should all get some color.

This thing is so sweet. Nice work on all aspects of the build and the contrasting greens is perfect for this custom of a build. Have a question, where do you send you're parts to get chromed? Could you briefly explain the process? Thanks

I sent the chrome to ChromeTech USA. His name is Robert and they do great work. I have attached a link to his website as it is pretty descriptive on the process and what you need to do to send parts in as well as different levels of service that he offers.

Thank you for the compliments. I am hoping to upload more images today.

What an awesome build Andy. Love them trucks! Some real nice modifications you've done. That 3d frame is badass, you should really think about selling those with all the accessories like the tanks, air compressors, etc. Besides the frame I really like what you did with the inside and outside of the bed. Then topped off with some clean ass lines from Kustoms Inc. I follow him on Instagram and everything he puts out is killer. What a great build, can't wait to see it done.
