I too have to touch up an area on a car that I'm working on, as I sanded right through a high point on a fender. A little paint, a little clear coat, and I'll be good to go, as I'm sure you will be. Stray Posted April 2, 2015 Author Share Posted April 2, 2015 Thanks for looking guys Well I decided I wasn't going to just touch her up, I would never exactly colour match it. So she got a full strip again. And since I have her naked, I decided to do some added detailing to the engine bay while I'm at it. Since I have to make a new radiator support panel anyhow. I have sliced up some box tube styrene and used that for the inner fender areas on each side, shaped to fit the inner wheel wells. Have a radiator cut down to size and a fan shroud also, probably not GM parts but who's gonna blame me? I also shaved a bit of the top of the firewall to add to give me an area to add some detail, i.e. the rubber seal. Probably making my life harder but oh well. Still have to find/make a battery and washer bottle/reservoir. And it looks like I'm gonna scratch build the heater box as the kit one is a bit WTF??? I'm an older returnee as well and I find my body hasn't kept up. But it is still fun despite the frustration. Love your build. Will steal some ideas for sure. Stray Posted April 11, 2015 Author Share Posted April 11, 2015 Fiddling fiddling fiddling... Here is the completed front end pics. Scratch built stub axles, springs, sway bar and mounts, steering rack and tie-rods. Pics are still poopy as only iPhone. And I have been working on the firewall and radiator panel. Though I seem to have neglected a step and test mocked it all beforehand, so now I have discovered that I am going to have to move the booster in a little to clear the wheelwell, which is not a big deal. However because I lost the radiator panel along with the kit radiator, shroud, batter and water bottle, I made a new panel and used spares for the radiator. Now that I have test fit it, the radiator is too wide! Making the battery connect with the wheelwell, so I am going to have to source another one and move the batter tray I scratch built inwards some more to get everything to fit nicely. Stray Posted April 15, 2015 Author Share Posted April 15, 2015 Pretty sure I have a dose of The Plague at the moment. I have reworked the firewall and radiator support panel though. Got a mock up did. The body is just in flat black as a primer, lightly scuffed, hence the scratch marks. Glad I did mock her up as the front seems to be a little high. Might be something catching on the interior panels, will have to look into that. But here she is at the moment, lots of lines and wiring all astray in the bay. Your doing some top notch detailing and scratch building work here. Sorry to hear what happened to your initial paint job. Yup have had that happen a time or two. And though it sucks to do it, it's worth the strip down and redo. Especially putting this much detail work into it. I always end up having a love/hate relationship with my builds when I do alot of detail and modifying work on them. But the end result always makes it worth the fuss. Have the engine mounted and hooking up lines and wires and the firewall is pretty much done now and about to be added to finish that part of the wiring. Will still have the battery and front loom to do. The alternator is wired now also, but that will go up under the front quarter panel and join to the headlight loom. The motor has been given a wash with Tamiya smoke to push/pull details too. Stray Posted April 22, 2015 Author Share Posted April 22, 2015 Oh yeah. I seem to have had a bit of warpage on the front fenders, they have twisted inwards a little. I have had to gently heat them and tweak them back out again. You can barely see it here, but the top of the grill is just not meeting flush. I have stripped the front and rear bumpers too, it seems the aqua clear from Alclad too some of the chrome effect away making them appear silver. Will be repainting them in the next few days. microwheel Posted April 23, 2015 Share Posted April 23, 2015 I agree with Joe. Very nice engine detail on your engine and engine bay area. As for your alclad chrome work, Alclad Chome doesn't play nice with any type of sealer or clear coat. Ya just got to be careful with handling it once ya got it done lol. Whenever I use the stuff, I always wait till the very end of the build to install the parts I used it one, that way any handling I have to do with it is a "one and don" type thing. But boy it does make chrome work look so much nicer. Yours will look great I'm sure. Over all your doing a outstanding job on your Chevelle. blunc Posted April 23, 2015 Share Posted April 23, 2015 excellent detail work, I don't think I've seen very many builders add a proper steering box to their builds. If you want to make smaller gauge throttle return springs, I have found that dead HO scale slot car armatures yield some 28 to 36 gauge wire that can be wound around needles or whichever size small drill bit you care to use.
