Atmobil Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I was reading in a thread about the Revell 49 Mercury woody that almost no stock 49 Mercury build are done. That was also what I found out for myself back in 2007 as I was searching around for refrences on my build of the classic AMT kit. I built it as a factorystock (almost anyway) car in need of some tlc but still a runner (let's say the year is 1964 and the car is 15 years old). Rusty, dented and missing some trim. It has aftermarket hubcaps on some of the wheels. It's dirty and filled with stuff. The trunk has a box of parts and tools in it aswell as a sack of potatoes and a rag covering up the spare wheel. The back seat has a stack of old newspapers and some sort of package in it and the front seat has been covered in a blanket that is now getting dirty. The weathering on this was done by attacking the body with my dremel and using salt on the body before final painting aswell as dusting it with grey primer afterwards. I sanded of the missing trim and drilled out holes with a small drill (I think it was 0.8mm).
Drake69 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Now all it needs is a "For Sale" sign and a shady character with a bulldog sitting next to him! Excellent work!
Atmobil Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Hehe, yeah. I did imagine that the owner of this one would be a bit on the shady side.
Jim in Falls Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I just bought the AMT 49 Merc, was planning on making a real nice stock out of it but your idea is even better. That model is great!!!
Atmobil Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Thank you very much This was the first time I weathered a model and was happy with the result of it. The only thing I'm not happy with on the model was the chromefoil on the rear window. There was a problem with the foil and it would not stick to the thin pillars very well. My plan at the moment is to to something similar to the Revell woody kit aswell.
Sixties Sam Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Very nice! Looks like it would become someone's project car. Good work! Sam
Atmobil Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Thanks a lot for the comments Well done. What's on the spare tire? Basicly a bit if tissuepaper covered with whiteglue/water mix. I see one detail now that I sould have made different if I built it today, the sparewheel has a lot of thread left. Should have been bald and the rag covering it should have been dirty.
Lunajammer Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 This I can relate to. All the details ring true and you did a wonderful job. Probably one of my favorite 49's.
Atmobil Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 Thanks for all the kind comments great job...where did you get the tools? If I remember correctly the tools came from either AMT 55 Chevy Nomad or AMT 63 Chevy Impala. I know I have seen some tools in several other kits aswell.
Atmobil Posted March 7, 2015 Author Posted March 7, 2015 The kit comes with a handful of tools. I think you are right on that one, they where possibly in the Merc kit. My memory is playing tricks on me on this one, it is afterall 8 years since I built it and lots of water has been under the bridge since then
62rebel Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 a good possible subject for a beat-on Merc would be Goodie's car from "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot"..... it's a key character prop in several dynamic scenes.
cobramike Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 wow, I really like this, it reminds me of a guy that I used to do haying with in the summer, he had a 49/50 Merc. that was all junked out almost exactly like this one. It had a tree that was growing thru the trunk lid. Very cool! Great job!
