ancient paint

28 October 2014 - 03:51 PM

I was working on a project this evening, digging around for brush paint, and found a jar of Pactra Oxide Orange M9, scale model flat, "a paint for authentic realism"!  It's one of those large round jars, approximately the size of Testors brush paints, and it's still GOOD!  Looking around a little more, I found a jar of Artillery Olive, and a jar without a label, but I think I remember it being Camouflage Gray. I remember mixing color into it to come up with haze gray (this was 1973 and I was just out of the Navy) for a ship model.  I actually think the orange dates from the mid 60s, back when I was attempting those old Revell 1955, 1956. 1957 Chevy models.  It's amazing to me that paint this old can still be good--where's Pactra when we need them?  Anybody else got any miracles still sitting around?

Westley's Bleche White

09 October 2014 - 01:42 PM

Noticed today that what used to be Westley's Bleche White is now Black Magic Bleche White, with a new formula.  Has anyone tried this new formula to strip paint from painted model bodies?  Thought I'd see what you all know before I give it a try...

Enamel over lacquer?

05 October 2014 - 02:28 PM

Remind me, everybody--can enamel be sprayed over lacquer?  I had two botched paint jobs yesterday, both using Testors Custom Lacquer System (those are the spray cans mixed to factory colors).  In both cases the cans began spitting out blobs of paint, even though I'd warmed both in warm water and shaken both for several minutes.  Now I think I'll go back to enamel, something I've always had better luck with.  So I guess I have two questions--can enamel be put over lacquer, and what do you all do when the can goes crazy on you like mine did?

1962 Corvette

27 August 2014 - 04:01 PM

Just finished putting the seven dash decals on the Revell '62 Corvette dashboard.  My hands are shaking, my eyes are crossed, and I'm sure my blood pressure is at an unhealthy level.  Whoa, that was fun...

Revell '62 Corvette gasser

06 July 2014 - 03:50 PM

Just started working on this, and in assembling the headers noticed that they were going to be a problem.  The left side pipes make the first bend off the head at a sharp angle, and descend pretty much vertically, while the right side set have a more gentle bend off the head, and stick out farther from the block than the left side headers.  I haven't gotten that far, but it looks like this will be a problem connecting to the side pipes, and it just looks odd.  Anyone else notice this, or do I have the one and only kit with this weirdness?
