Unusual new release from Diopark

kinda hoping that is a sick joke on the part of whoever created it.

not a sick joke. Diopark makes a lot of unusual kits of things you would want in a diorama. Things like individual tools, dinner settings, bicycles, motor scooters and motorcycles. If there are many people making scenes of historical importance in different war scenes through the years, why wouldn't someone be wanting to build a middle east scene. These Mercedes Benzes are all over the middle east as are Peugeots. This company even makes Soothern Viet Namese people in scale. Something I never saw before.

I had to explore this a little more...

Check it out HERE

This is really cool. 101 pieces with a PE fret, in 1/35 scale. ALL FOUR DOORS open. Open trunk with underhood trunk bracing. Police or civilian version. Comes with IED accessories (cell phone, mine, looks like a propane tank, etc).

that car would figure highly in a Mogadishu setting a la "Black Hawk Down"....... or the final sequence of "Navy Seals".... perhaps a scenario from "Munich".... all of which might constitute a "sick joke" to somebody. trouble is, it's historical fact that we're dealing with and not revisionist history.

four opening doors in 1/35th? no wonder it costs so much. that's complicated execution.

Oh dear , yes could have used a better back drop .

Yea, I'm thinking of things like that as a retail worker, as in what's not going to piss off the average customer if they happen to see it while wandering through my store. I'd have probably done box art more along the lines of say a staff car, where it's there, but nothing............offensive to most folks not interested in those kinds of dioramas.

I can't say I am very offended by it, maybe it is more of a USA-thing.

More of a personal thing IMHO, but I don't see it as being much different than a WWII solder with a grenade or a Vietnam War soldier with a flamethrower. War is war, and it's still a horrible thing, regardless of who, where, and when.

That said, I'm guessing there haven't been a lot of "modern" civilian type vehicles available in 1/35 scale? I would expect the usual WWII era staff vehicles and such, but this sounds like it could be a nice change of pace for 1/35 scale builders.

US MSRP would be around $69.95. I took a pass on selling it, as I thought that was too high. There is also a Police version, so you don't have to build the bad guys...

And yeah, to the 1/35th military modeling market this is targeted to, it isn't offensive in the least.

Now if a 1/24th scale Mercedes aimed at regular civilian car modelers came out with this same scene on the box top and all the IED accessory parts, then yes, that would be pretty offensive.

Not many in plastic. the 2 Meng Toyota pickups (Hilux and Land Cruiser) come to mind -

Being that it's aimed at Armo(u)r modelers for use in a diorama setting it's got a few building options. The IED laden vehicle on the box top for something in the 80's-Current Middle East conflict, or with it's taxi/police markings for something period and less violent with a period German armor. It's not aimed at automotive modelers, it's not supposed to be P.C.

War is stupid, but it's also a reality, and for the people who this is aimed it it gives them something besides a WWII scene to do.

Complaining about the box art reminds me of the thread about the Revell AG Beetle. "This isn't designed for me and my preferences, or the USA; so it's wrong and/or I object"...

In my mind, where the "tasteless" comes in is that "war" involves professional warriors and organized entities engaged in battle with like warriors and entities.

"Terrorism" involves zealots whose objective is to inflict and engender as much pain, suffering, and 'terror' upon civilian individuals and masses as possible; targets who are not similarly trained and equipped to engage in battle.

Thus, I see a big difference in marketing military models and marketing terrorists.

And, I don't think it's a "USA thing" at all. Ask the average citizen of the world whose homeland has been targeted by terrorists.

I grant your point and I agree with it, BUT - the fact is that's what the U.S. and NATO has being dealing with for the past 10+ years. It's not a question of traditional war vs. gorilla zealot terrorists blowing up things up, or even whether the "war" in Iraq or Afghanistan should have happened, whether we should drone bomb Pakistan, or whether the Israelis should play nice with the Palestinians, or who's at fault for Syria, Libya, and the beat goes on and on. Heck it's not even fight over there, so we don't have to fight it over here.

Unless China or Russia go off their rockers and starts WWIII this is the unfortunate and real face of "warfare" for the foreseeable future. No amount of guys with guns, no matter how much training, can REALLY stand up to an army...see Northern Mali vs. a small contingent of the French Army (the butt of every bad surrender joke since 1942).
