What Irked You Today?

I don't think any major media outlet literally makes up stuff. They all have their viewpoints and biases... every media outlet does... they all put their "spin" on things, but they don't just make up false stories.

You can't just blindly follow any one news source and assume it's the gospel truth. You have to have enough sense to "shop around" and get the story from more than one source. That way you'll at least hear more than one side of any given story and you can make up your own mind as to what you want to believe. And you have to remember that there's a difference between a news show and an opinion/talk show.

The worst thing is seeing people interviewed about their views, and they'll be asked, "what do you think of so-and-so as a news source?" And they'll say "oh, I can't stand them, they're all such (fill in the blank).

"Have you ever watched that program?"

"Of course not, I hate them."

First let me state that I am a motorcycle rider of 40 plus years, so I'm far from anti motorcycle. But I just saw a man I'd guess about 30 years old riding in shorts and T shirt, helmet-less and flip-flops. If that weren't bad enough he had a child of what looked to be about 4 or 5, dressed the same but with a full sized adult helmet on, riding on the gas tank. This was not on a small neighborhood street but a full blown 4 lane state highway!

If you are referring to me I mentioned no party, no politician by name nor did I say anything about how taxes are spent.

Complaining about high taxes is as American as a Baseball game on the 4'th of July. It's how this country started.

Some people can't tell the difference between civics and politics, so they whine or complain any time they hear either . . . if it doesn't fit into their personal bias.

That did happen twice in the last fifteen years that I know of. One reporter won a prize for his work even tho it was proven a falsehood and retracted.

Well, technically, it wasn't so much high taxes, but "taxation without representation" that irked the colonists. They were being taxed and ruled by a government in which they had no say. That's what PO'd the colonists more than the actual tax rates.

Civics (not politics) lesson for the day... ^_^

That might be the case in one or two isolated incidents by one particular reporter. But major national media outlets as a whole (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc.) don't just make up stuff out of thin air.

Kinda makes me wish there was a "National Enquirer" channel. I'd MUCH rather watch blatantly false and made up stories about the lotto-winning-love-child-of-a-space-alien-and-a-chimp than the heavily-spun, try-to-sell-you-a-load-of-bull-exhaust posing as "news", spouted by overpaid talking heads who often don't know enough about the subject they're reporting on to know if they're saying something that's even remotely true.

And at least, most people probably wouldn't believe the stuff...unlike the "news stories".

There is the Onion, 'Americas Finest News Source' and their ONN--Onion News Network..some pretty funny stuff. Sometimes their fake news is as plausible as the real news. http://www.theonion.com/channels/ifc/

The important thing is to be able to discern between a news report and a talk/opinion show.

The "talking heads" on TV are all speaking editorially about the news stories. You don't see the editorializing on a straight newscast. They may only cover certain stories and ignore others, but the stories they do cover are reported more or less factually.

The CBS (or ABC or NBC) nightly news... straight news reporting (more or less).

O'Reilly Factor, Hardball, Anderson Cooper, etc... talk and opinion about the current stories in the news. Shows like that may "report" breaking news, but they almost always follow with commentary on the story.

That distinction–what is a "news report" and what is a "talk show"–is what a lot of Americans simply don't get. A lot of people think that Jon Stewart's show is an actual news show.

Again... gather your news from more than one source. And know what you're watching.

Agreed about multiple sources.. I don't really watch TV news anymore--used to watch CNN pretty regularly but it is pretty tabloidish nowdays, IMO. So I go to the internet--since I prefer to read the news more than watching videos and talking heads--- mostly the New York Times, NBC/MSNBC for US news, BBC for international news and motorsport.

Nothing "irked" me today as it was Father's Day and I spent a good part of the day with most of the family. Even got to do a bit of spray painting also. So, NO complaints.

Amen! I had gone to New Jersey for my model club meeting on Saturday so my wife and I got together with my daughters for dinner at a local restaurant. We beat the Father's Day rush and had a nice time. Today i got to sleep late and spend a little time with coffee and the Internet boards. Then I went on to do a bit of yard work and power wash my deck for the summer. Life is good!

Ah, where to begin...

First, the cheapo blue generic razors from the grocery store, that USED to cut and last like the "more expensive spread" now only last for a couple of shaves before disintegrating. When you knock the whiskers out under running water, the heads break off after about 3 or 4 shaves. This is a new phenomenon. Fixable with a couple dabs of Loctite toughened super-glue, but WTF ???

The rear universal joint I put in my Chevy truck 2 years ago has already failed. The original lasted for 20+ years, but the new one has already disintegrated (must be made to the same quality specs as the razors). Same mostly reasonable driving style, same greasing of the joint about every 10,000 miles. The needles in the bearing must have been as soft as welding rod. Oh, the joys of Chinese-made parts.

The septic tank in my new place has backed up, and stinking brown lumpy water is coming up in the bathtub. Apparently, the prior tenants were notorious for causing regular plumbing problems, flushing didies and paper down the thing. Morons didn't understand indoor plumbing, and apparently the tank is now full of crapp and paper. Lovely.

And the build I've just started on a '47 Caddy convertible came to us from a used-to-be-good shop. The car was disassembled there, and all the rust was bodge-welded and bondoed over. The iron LS the morons swapped in was 1.5" too far to one side in the chassis, and the steering shaft was fouling the headers. Same morons had done the steering install. The trans tailshaft housing is so high the UJ WILL foul the trans tunnel, and the "custom" trans mount is made of 1/16" sheet!!! The Camaro front subframe somebody hacked into the car isn't square in the chassis, was installed 2" TOO FAR FORWARD, and it's been built with Ford bolt-pattern aftermarket hubs and ADAPTED back to GM to match the '70s Caddy rear-end pattern...which makes the front track 2" too wide. And to top it all off, besides EVERYTHING needing to be redone (not my problem, as I'm paid straight time for what it takes), the fools dumped all the parts in various boxes, jars and cans with NO LABELS, including every single nut, bolt or other fastener on the car, and piled sharp scratchy greasy parts on top of perfect glass lenses and new chrome. Oh...and the "relay board" someone had started building was just that: a pine board that looked like it had once been a fence picket.

Morons morons morons. Sometimes I just have to wonder where all the smart people went.
