Sport Suburban Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Here is another rebuild. This is a 69 Road Runner from Johan. This time it is more Johan than the last time I rebuilt it. It has a correct for Johan 69 interior even though it is more correct for the GTX than Road Runner issue. This was a later reissue that had the 70 interior in it. I also added the missing Johan Hemi engine and air grabber. When I last rebuilt it I used an AMT Hemi and wheels from Revell. I liked it but wanted to redo it. Since I had purchased a few more rebuilders I had all the parts this time.
Sport Suburban Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 This is what I had built the first time. More of a hopped up 69 than a pure stock one. As mentioned before it had an AMT Hemi and Revell wheels. Plus the original 70 interior. I wanted to rebuild one as Johan had originally issued it. Don't worry thou as I have another one that is getting the Modelhaus A12 conversion and AMT chassis and 440 6BBL for a better detailed build.
Sport Suburban Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 And just for kicks this is the very same model that I purchased off eBay many years ago.
StevenGuthmiller Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 I really appreciate the fact that you kept this one & your GTX build so true to the original Johan kit. The work on both of them is exceptional & I really consider them somewhat of a time capsule, or a history lesson. Many builders will decry the fact that you didn't swap out the chassis & engine parts for something more modern, but I love to see these old obsolete kits done in the manor that they were intended. It's a little bit like a tutorial on what could be done with these old kits straight from the box with some modern skills & materials, & you've done Johan proud with these two Raoul! Steve
Dann Tier Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Absolutely LOVE it!!!!.....Keith Marks decals?
Chuck Most Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 I love it- and I also love the fact you kept it all Johan. I think this is the first one in years I've seen that didn't have an AMT '68 chassis under it. As nice as the full detail jobs can be it's also cool to see a nice example of how they started.

I often go back and forth on this topic. I have many restorations that I keep as many of the kit issued parts as possible and I also have many that are kit bashed and upgraded to some very nice models. It is sometimes challenging just to see what I can do to what is issued.
Hmann68 Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Outstanding! Great paint and clean work! I built this kit as a kid in the early 80's and then gave it to a friend, wish I kept it! Nice job on this!
drodg Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Well done and to echo someone else are those Keith Marks decals for the Roadrunner decals?

moparfarmer Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 You say you used the JoHan GTX interior..It was an option on the Decor Package/Deluxe interior group..It was available..It made the cost of the RR almost as much as the GTX..You did a fantastic rebuild of your model..Very nice and clean...

Both the Johan 69 Road Runner and GTX have the same interiors, Johan didn't change anything other than the body parts. I understand the GTX came first and the Road Runner was next. I would have liked a bench seat in it. Modelhaus did offer the bench seat interior and it is nice but I only bought one.

You know as well as I do that these old kits never saw this level of build quality back when they were originally issued & I routinely love to build them basically from the box to show the world that these were wonderful kits worthy of our attention. But on the other hand, I also love to do some minor modifications to correct some of the most obvious detriments to the appearance of the kit. Things that only enhance an already great kit, like eliminating the screw posts on the radiator braces of most of the old annuals, or the occasional engine swap when a more realistic version is available. Anyway, terrific work Raoul!! Steve
