JollySipper
Hey, guys.... I've been working on this T-Bird for about a week. It's the Revell '89 Super Coupe. The one I have is molded in red, so in order to paint the body I'll have to get some shellac based primer to seal in the pigment from the plastic... While I wait on that, I've gotten the engine and interior done. The plan I have for the body is white with a dark blue above the character line that runs down the side of the car. Anyway, I just wanted to show what I've been up to. Hopefully soon I'll be able to get that primer so I can paint the body..... Thanks for looking, and comment freely.....

I was going thru Thunderbird threads (I have a WIP Turbo Coupe) and noticed you had a great start on a Super Coupe. Any more progress?? JollySipper
Hey, Mike man..... I believe I'm gonna have to get some enamel paints to use on this one.... The lacquers I've tried to spray it with aren't working well with the red plastic this is molded in. I'm gonna build it, just need to get that enamel for it..... As you read on the Turbo coupe WIP thats also moulded in red, the acrylic Stynyrez primer did just fine over the red, as did the Createx Autoborne sealer (also acrylic). I guess you don't use Acrylics??
JollySipper
I don't have an airbrush set up..... not yet anyway. When I painted the Turbo Coupe, I just used all DupliColor products that I normally use. They didn't react with the Monogram red plastic. For some reason, this kit is being difficult to cover....... TransAmMike
Try Rustoleum or Krylon (that I prefer) as a primer. I don't think they would be a problem with the plastic. Some others on here can chime in on which of those brands work well. I'm pretty sure both have a line that say's on the can for plastic. I got kinda fed-up with this build. There's no way to paint it without the red showing through. I guess that's why the box art car is red! Too bad, too, as I really like these mn12 T Birds........ I built an ‘80s era kit Monogram Ferrari 308 last year, molded in likely the same red plastic as your Tbird. I primed the body first with black Krylon rattle can primer, followed by gray Tamiya primer. I then airbrushed it in Tamiya yellow acrylic. The red was completely covered by the primers and there is no bleed through to the yellow coat that I can tell. Give that a try? Or just paint it red 😂

Some things just don't go as planned. Sometimes it's best to set it aside as work on something else!
