Sidney Schwartz Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 This one was coming along so nicely, and almost finished. Body color is Tamiya Park Green, which looked great. I decided on a matte finish, so I sprayed on Tamiya flat clear. I sprayed just until it started to settle. Looks awful. I've not had this problem with their glossy clear. I've also used the flat clear on smaller bits without any problems. Any ideas on what caused this? It's so bad I'm going to have to strip it completely and start over.
slusher Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 The park green may have not finished gazing out, or it reacted with the clear. What clear did you use?
Rick L Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Is the green enamel and the clear lacquer by chance?

He says Tamiya flat clear. It sure looks like the green wasn’t Tamiya lacquer - hopefully he can tell us if it was acrylic airbrushed on followed by lacquer clear.
Speedpro Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 "I sprayed just until it started to settle" Sure looks like it was sprayed on to thick. Always apply mist coats first when using clear lacquer
mr moto Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Using Google to find out what I don't personally know, it looks like Tamiya makes a TS-35 Park Green spray lacquer and also an X-28 Park Green acrylic paint. Same color - big difference in the paint. Although I'd be surprised if Tamiya didn't make their line of paints cross-compatible enough to allow this combination, that could be the problem. Which Tamiya paints did you use?
Sidney Schwartz Posted February 3, 2023 Author Posted February 3, 2023 Tamiya TS-35 and TS-80, both synthetic laquers, so that shouldn't be the problem. Maybe I did spray it on too thick. Looks like I may be able to sand down the clear rather than having to strip everything off.

Can-Con Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 (edited) Yup, had that happen myself by putting too much clear on at one time. It can also happen when you put a flat paint over a hi gloss paint. BTW, that's called "crazing", not orange peal. two completely different problems. Edited February 3, 2023 by Can-Con

Dpate Posted February 3, 2023 Posted February 3, 2023 Yeah just look at Can-Con pic. Crazing in the middle and orange peel at the bottom. I can't be of much help on there clears, because i use 2K clearcoat.
Sidney Schwartz Posted February 4, 2023 Author Posted February 4, 2023 OK, lesson learned. I'll be repainting using acrylic matte craft paint and Krylon acrylic flat clear. 1
