I didn’t post any of this WIP on here as it’s all on my Instagram.

This is a Hasegawa VW Type 2 pickup. I chose to do a weathered Gulf Livery.

This is my first weathered build, and it has to be one of the most fun builds I’ve done in a long time. I’m very pleased with the outcome of my first attempt at weathering.

The paint is Gulf Orange and Gulf Blue from Splash Paints, and as always…..is amazing!

All of the weathering was done with Vallejo Acrylics, and AK Washes. I used a combo of salt technique, sponge technique, and brush painting for all of the chipping.

The front stance was achieved by cutting the front fender wells out, some of the front seat, and notching the chassis so the front suspension would tuck way up in there.

The rear stance was achieved by mounting the rear axle directly to the chassis so it sat much lower.

The interior was painted in Tamiya Dessert Yellow. Brown embossing powder was used for carpet.  Highlight Model Studio door panels were used along with Highlight Model Studio MOONEYES pedals, and dash dress up parts.

I chose to do safari windows as well from Highlight Model Studio.

Highlight Model Studio tags/tag brackets, and headlight visors were also added for some vintage VW style.

The wheels are 3D printed by myself, and are from Slowlys Models on cults 3D. I chose to use the kit supplied hub caps to add some depth since they’re tall. RB Motion valve stems were also added.

All of the stuff in the bed is random stuff I had such as some 3D printed gas cans, jack, die cast jack stands, the factory weathered wheels and tires from the kit, as well as a 911r Fujimi engine that I built and added.

Thanks for checking it out, hope you all enjoy! IMG_0699.thumb.jpeg.6b4b4b54b9982294a8c69531b7591543.jpeg

Great lookin' Bug truck. Some of the most believable weathering I've ever seen, too.  :D

Thank you sir!! I definitely enjoy this style of build since I have one under my belt now.

Very realistic weathering. That's a great looking VW. The opened front windows are a nice touch.

Thank you so much. This was a super fun build and now I can’t wait to do another one like it.

Such a nice model! Easily a best of show

Thanks man! I threw this thing together super fast for a local show, and it took 1st place in the trucks/vans/SUV class.  I was very surprised.

Very nicely done.

The weathering is perfect, not too much, not too little, which makes it look like a well used VW pickup.  The Gulf colours make it quite eye catching.

cheers, Graham

Thanks Graham!  I originally was going to go the easier route, and just take some sand paper and scuff it down to show some of the red oxide bleeding through in a couple of places.  After watching a lot of youtube videos and a lot of help from friends on Instagram, I decided to go all out and try something completely new to me.   Boy, I'm glad I did!  It is a super cool new skill that I now have in my arsenal, and something that is really fun to do!

A real departure from your usual glossy finished models, well done sir! Love the details and for a first time weathering, looks spot on!

You nailed it! The finished model looks awesome, even better in person, and it's astounding how well the weathering turned out on your very first try. I can almost smell the must and the rust LOL. The safari windows by Highlight are icing on the cake ?

Thanks Bob!! The safari windows are a must on a sweet old school VW!  Can't wait to bring this one to ACME this year!
