Yeah, just as they're taking "models" out of the mag. 2 issues now and I kinda miss parts with appeal. What do they call it now, parts that have appeal? Anyway... Great to see in the pages, our hobby needs to have great articles like that in automotive magazines if not more magazines period. Plus I always like Tim's stuff, for me personally he seems to nail both subject and style of build.

Local Hobby Shp vs. Mega-Store
Phirewriter replied to CometMan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ok, perhaps I was a bit terse. After re reading your post I still take issue with the internet as the end all be all for best price. Other than possibly Tower our LHS meets or beats most internet pricing. And again they have a buying advantage most shops don't and are able to pass along the better pricing. l apologize for my remarks. Your post just came across as "I want my stuff cheap, now and with no interference" Plus since you chose to quote me on one of my reasons for supporting my LHS I took it as though you had issue with it. Again I realize that may not have been the intent, to me that's how it read. -
Local Hobby Shp vs. Mega-Store

Unfortunately my job interferes with my ability to attend local club functions so I'm usually happy to connect with fellow modelers. Our local club has a display at our LHS so at least I'm able to catch up on what others are building. In addition they have slotcar racing on a nice Carrera track plus lots more auto related stuff. Part of the experience is the inspiration and creative juices that get flowing in an environment like that. Don't get me wrong, I get alot of ideas and inspiration from the excellent stuff people post here. The shop experience is just different, not better or worse. Just another way to boost my appetite for building. -
Great build! I really like the Itacha style of cars. Were those kit decals or aftermarket?

Nice wagon, I think the accessories are a great complement to the build. It's something I haven't seen much and I like it!

Hey Greg, don't know if you still have the body for the King Cobra, but you may be able to find a shiny new replacement via Tamiya USA's website. They repopped this along with some other neat bodies a couple years ago. Was checking out the site a couple months ago and the Cobra plus quite a few others were still shown as available. Around $20 I believe, not too bad to restore something as cool as that.

Local Hobby Shp vs. Mega-Store

I guess that's fine if the only social experience you want is hiding behind a keyboard. Getting outdoors sometimes can help improve an attitude. -

I don't understand the need to blindly assume all shop owners are trying to rob you and the only way to get that all important deal is to shop the web period! I understand the fact that there are those shop owners that resist anything regarding the internet, be pricing, selection or any other things that have been brought up. I am in a very fortunate situation to have a local shop that is also a distributor and sells oline. Due to that they don't fall into many of the trappings some stores do. They price kits and supplies competitively in the store and have as wide of a selection as anyone could ask for. I realize that this is unique amongst hobby stores and has advantages most shops can't duplicate. I still enjoy walking in and discovering something new and know they will have supplies I need. They take pre orders and will hold kits if needed and other things that help out hobbyists, great service not always found online. More often than not I run into a fellow builder to shoot the BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH with for a bit. It's as much of a social experience as a buying trip and I put high value on that. Sitting behind a keyboard simply does not equal the interaction face to face contact does whether it's with staff or fellow hobbyists. That doesn't mean I don't/won't shop oline. I like the fact I generally don't need to. -
Just MY opinion, " Patina TOO far"
Phirewriter replied to Greg Myers's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Sorry, just not digg'n the look. Go through all the trouble of repairing and modifying a car and then make it look like a POS. I don't care if it's cleared or faux patina. Driven is one thing but neglected, sorry not for me. My home isn't decorated to look abandoned either but I'm sure somewhere out there.... -
Local Hobby Shp vs. Mega-Store
Phirewriter replied to CometMan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Parts boxes indeed! Our LHS has a big rummuge in late November/early December in which he drags out parts boxes, built ups and all other manner of hobby stuff to dig through. Most is obtained from buying collections and after everything is sorted some kits go to eBay, other kits go to shows and some are sold at the store in the collector kit shelves. The rest is reserved for the yearly sale. -
As far as I can see the Wedge dragster is still coming in late August as far as Tower Hobbies has it listed. In addition to Tower and Stevens it is still listed by a number of smaller distributors as a future release. I should also point out this is showing up as an OAS kit with no regular box alternative, no big deal as far as I'm concerned. I will be buying a few anyway regardless of a couple of bucks up charge. I also spoke to my LHS owner who is also a hobby distributor and he is not aware of any cancellation of this kit. We just need to keep calm and save our pennies.

Iwata air compressors? $$$$$$
Phirewriter replied to Griff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've found Iwata's line of compressors to be very dependable. I have a Power Jet as a backup compressor (use a line in from the garage compressor for my primary air source) I'm am very happy with it. Depending on the size your looking for the Grex is indeed a good value too, plus Chicago Airbrush is a great store if you are contemplating making your purchase from them. I managed the art department for a hobby shop a number of years ago. I've tested and worked with many compressors from a number of manufacturers. Both Grex and Iwata have good products through their lines. You might want to look at Silentaire's Scorpion line of compressors too. -

In addition to my posting about my LHS, I use some of the local shows/swap meets throughout the year to source harder to find items before going online. I would rather do business with people I know if possible. -
about how many models have you
Phirewriter replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
At least you have them. How many posts have we seen stating that "my mom thew out... or when Dad died my sister/brother or other relative took them, etc...) Hopefully in time you will be able to find the pieces necessary to restore your models. Not all my dad's are perfect either. Some I'm leaving alone and others will be fixed or restored. -
Modeling never ends... I usually have even a little time to poke around at a kit and make notes for a future project or get a few things glued, painted or just moved forward. I have other pursuits that I try to put a little time into everyday. Helps to walk away from the TV or the computer too. (As I sit here posting to the message board) It's too easy to be distracted by our electronic gizmos.

Where did you find that brand of nail polish? Gorgeous color!!! Have to tag along with the woman when she replenishes her beauty supplies again. Kinda makes me laugh when I go to a store by myself and watch the look I get when purchasing nail polish. Nowadays you'd probably get less judgement for wearing the stuff than building models with it!

I think the "up top" does this design no favors. I'll go with a diplomatic "unique" and a very nice build. I'm a Virgil Exner fan so I will judge a little softer on this design. This is the only car I need from this series to complete my set. Since Revell owns the Renwall tooling it would be interesting to see if these molds still exist.

about how many models have you
Phirewriter replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had typical Midwestern parents raised in the depression years. Unlike many from their generation they were not terrible pack rats but had enough foresight to keep what they thought might be important. Go to a southeastern Wisconsin area rummage in a neighborhood heavy with older folks.... It can be jaw dropping. The fact that my dad proudly displayed many of my builds along with his clearly helped preserve quite a few of my models. Thanks to him I have my very first glued together and painted by my hands model (I was around 4 or 5) made from his parts box pieces. -
Those bikes are neat. Looking forward to these. As far as the '32 sedan from the Willys kit, it only appeared once after the original release. That issue combined a slightly modified body (pins on the body sides for the custom lower trim were removed) and was combined with the Vicky/phaeton chassis to make a more conventional rod. I'm guessing the custom interior, Buick motor and custom parts have been lost or don't exist any longer, but one can hope!
