I agree!!!! I have a few of the reissued versions plus both originals unfortunately poorly built, but in mint boxes. I still see the roadster version cheap so I don't know if sales would merit retooling/backdating the the kit but we can hope. That being said I really like this build, I think the different wheels give it a cool vibe. Looks more international I guess is the best way I can describe it while the mag's that came in the kit certainly gave it the more American bred/built look. Cool!!

AMT Ford 1929 Roadster Mod Rod Info
Phirewriter replied to regular guy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The Piranha drag version is an entirely different kit and was reissued around 10 years ago. The spy version has nothing in common except the name, there's no conversion or extra parts other than what came in each kit. I've seen the dragster at shows and swaps for not much more than retail so they shouldn't be had to track down if you need one. -
Unfortunately both the Horn Toad and Dog Catcher were permanently changed at some point in the 70's to the Rattler and Sand Shark respectively. The Sand Shark was reissued a long time ago during Monogram's first series of SSP issues. Since they were willing to spend the time and money on retooling some of the other TD's kits perhaps they will think about returning these back to their original (better) design at some point too.

Looks almost like Spectraflame yellow, a color found on redline Hot Wheels from '68 - '72 I've used Createx Wicked Colors and AutoAir with good results. I know there are cheap ways to thin Createx but the best results I've had was using their # 2012 high performance reducer with either a Testors lacquer or automotive urethane clear coat. The nice thing with these waterborne paints are the fine pearl finishes as demonstrated above, looks great!! BTW if you're looking to try these paints cheap, Hobby Lobby (use your coupon) has a mixed rack of Createx including the Wicked and a small section of AutoAir.

ACRYLIC from now on
Phirewriter replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice to know, not that it matters much anymore. We got different stories from a number of distributors regarding the decision to eliminate the paint lines. This is the first I've seen this release explaining things. There were rumors for some time, when we approached the Testors reps at one of the hobby trade shows they clearly did not want to talk about it, instead trying to push the new paint lines at that time. It was truly unfortunate as they were excellent paints. -
ACRYLIC from now on
Phirewriter replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not to go to far off topic but it was not Testors that killed the train colors. Soon after they were acquired by Rustoleum/RPM was when the product chopping began. That's the unfortunate issue when large corporate umbrella companies buy up small or specialty businesses, it becomes a bottom line at any cost while bean counters instead of the people who actually know something make the decisions. I was in the retail end of the hobby during that time and it was almost madness as people stocked up on whatever the could get until it was gone, it didn't take long to disappear. -
That looks awesome, my late father loved those large scale Entex releases. Unfortunately this is one he never got too other than shuffling through the box a few times. It's nice to see what could have been.

That is good looking resto/upgrade, nice shade of red and completely agree with Harry on the wheels. I know there are a few who are kind of done with Torq Thrust wheels, but I've always thought they are some of the best looking/designed wheels. They look good on most anything (pre 70's)

That chopper looks fantastic! What paint, color(s) etc... did you use?

Indeed!! My wife is generally fairly squeamish and usually doesn't like violence or horror movie stuff, but Daryl is one of the only reasons she'll watch Walking Dead with me. I may have to agree with her a little bit in that Glenn and Abraham's deaths were all little to graphic because unfortunately unlike zombies man can and does have the capability for such mindless cruelty and violence to one another and hits a little close. Now we just have to see what the retribution is concerning Negan because as we know the novel and TV storyline don't always follow the same path.

Revell 30 Model A Ford Production Halted?
Phirewriter replied to Daddyfink's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Even if there was some damage to the tooling or whatever is the reason, I remember the same situation, theories etc... when there were no '70 Cudas to be had. Then we got the Sox and Martin car (and more Cuda kits afterwards) Regardless of what the reasons are I'm sure Revell will produce more. It certainly seems like it's a profitable product for them not to produce more. Tower Hobbies is showing both A's as temporarily unavailable and not discontinued. (Tower is under the same corporate umbrella as Great plains distribution and owns Revell) that's my first go to as far as what any Revell kit status is. My LHS is also a distributor and while out of them, is confident he will have more as soon as they are available. I don't have any of these kits yet, however I will never pay some eBay seller $75 or more for the kits. Patience is a virtue grasshopper. -
Thoughts and prayers for his family! I've known him since the Auto Modelers Group in Milwaukee was founded. Great guy and always eager to promote the hobby. He was instrumental in the founding of the Milwaukee NNL, a contributor to the modeling magazine's and almost always at all the local shows and swaps. As with anyone here in our community it is indeed a great loss.

Color, stance, excellent!!! Nice job. That look would really translate well to the real car. While stock it's a good looking car despite it's battle cruiser size. This looks sleek and streamlined.

Renwal The Visible Automobile Chassis
Phirewriter replied to regular guy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Revell consulted no one about this kit. This was originally brought out by Renewal in the early 60's and is rather generic. As to reissuing it, first off the V8 was permanently changed to be hand crank driven so it will no longer match up to the transmission on the chassis. Nor can it be electricaly powered to function with the chassis as was in the original kit. Revell may have the molds yet for the plastic parts of the chassis but the numerous parts ( rubber tires, electrical components and hardware) were outsourced and more than likely cannot be found today. Looking at my kits, the huge amount of hardware alone would give production planners and purchasing agents nightmares! That's not even taking into consideration proprietary components like motors, gears and electrical parts and contacts. Some of the smallest stuff can often lead to huge costs on kits like this pricing them out of the final cost/profit equation. If after all these years Revell thought it was viable to bring it out they would have. -
Batmobile at Auction

What a sad demise for that poor '59 Dodge. -
Very cool!! I believe there was an article by Don Emmons about building a replica of the "Purple Potato Chip" dune buggy dragster. Looks very similar to yours. I have the issue, I'll try to find it. If memory serves me he modified a piranha dragster chassis and used a Convair motor.

Can anybody identify this
Phirewriter replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've got a Hawk go kart, very similar in design but has slightly fatter slick tires. That orange kart is neat, I've never seen one with a replica motor. The few kart models I've seen all had electric motors of some kind. If the Hawk mold exists Rd2 might have access to it, would be neat to see it out again. -
Great looking build!!! Monogram really needs to reissue this.

Model King reissued the Chevelle a number of years ago, so it does exist in the modified stocker form. -
Any info on this kit
Phirewriter replied to IceMan Collections's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This a JF kit. It was designed by Ed Newton around the time JF was producing resin kits for Testors. It was a hauler for a Mercury based hot rod with a narrowed body and open wheels. The component parts are still listed on his site (Cosmic Hauler) but not the whole kit. -
Wonder who has the molds for this ?
Phirewriter replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As I posted above Union "possibly" has the VW mold that is the basis for this kit. None of the IMC and Heller kits they last released have ever been seen since the early 80's. Off the top of my head they had the molds for the following IMC kits, Lola T-70, Chaparral 2e, '48 Ford's, the series of GT40's, the VW and the Lotus 49. There have been many theories as to the whereabouts of the molds but no one has a definite answer. I think you are quite safe ( and lucky) in your purchase. -

Phirewriter replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Union Models of Japan was the last to release the VW so it's possible they would have at least the basis for the kit. If the mold still exists. Otherwise being an IMC/Testors mold it's possible parts may exist with Round2. I've seen a couple of these at car shows and all seem to have that high-rise look. Maybe poor design, fitment issues over the front suspension or to have better interior space? Always liked the Bradly GT better if your going for the sports kit car.
