Automotive (and other) toys from our childhood

And the horror of punching a dolphin! I want one! Look at the smirk on Flipper's face. It just makes me want to punch him. ? -
Automotive (and other) toys from our childhood
unclescott58 replied to Harry P.'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I just noticed how the kid going after Dennis punching toy is dressed. He even has the slingshot in his back pocket. When was the last time you saw a kid with a slingshot? Boy, a slingshot! They'd send a kid to counseling or worst if a kid carried one of those today. And god forbid, if they had a pocketknife! Punching toys, slingshots, pocketknives. And let's not forget those Rockin Sockin Robot above. How did we all grow up and not become psychotic killers? -

AMT '40 Ford Sedan Delivery
unclescott58 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ertl should be ashamed of themselves for conceiving of that version of the sedan delivery in the first place. And to call it a "Woodie"? Where is the wood? Plus the typical boring Ertl box art. I passed on that one as quick was I could at the time. And I'm still not regretting it. -
You are correct. Meteors were sold through your Mercury dealers in Canada. And for the reasons you mentioned. Canadian Monarchs (1946 - 1961) were sold through your Ford dealer so he could have a higher priced model on his show floor. Now the confusion comes in with the one year only Frontenac. In 1960 you could walk into your Mercury/Meteor dealer and buy a Falcon with a different grille and taillights, called the Frontenac. And for 1960 only there were no Comets sold in Canada. Why? Because when Comet was under development it was to be an Edsel companion. Not a Mercury. This would have created a problem for your Mercury/Meteor dealers. On the US side of the boarder, when Edsel was paired with another Ford brand, it was paired with Mercury. North of the boarder, Ford of Canada's plan was to replace Monarch with Edsel. There are no '58 Monarchs for this reason. Under that setup your Ford/Edsel dealer would get both the Falcon and the Comet. Leaving your Mercury/Meteor dealer with no equivalent model to sell. Hence the Frontenac. But, since Edsel flopped on both sides of the boarder, the Monarch was hastily brought back for '59. And the decision to pair up Comet with Mercury came too late to cancel the Frontenac. Which worked out okay since Comet wasn't ready to hit the show floors until March of 1960, about 6 months after Falcon and Frontenac were ready to go. I love those Canadian only variants. Can you tell?

AMT '39 / '40 Ford Sedan
unclescott58 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I know for sure AMT's coupe and sedan delivery kits share the same chassis, fenders, engines, etc. But, the sedan looks to me like it's based on a different tooling. The front ends are not set up on the coupe or sedan delivery, to easily be converted to a '39 using the parts from the sedan kit. The chassis also doesn't look exactly the same. And the optional engines, while being the same between the coupe and sedan delivery, is not the same in the sedan. Also there is some question by Ellen Shaver about the loss of the '40 version of the sedan being lost after the "Diamond In The Rough" version? No worries about that. The Stevens International version I have, made in the last ten years, can still be built as a '39 or '40 Ford sedan. Despite the box art promoting the '39, the instructions talk about the '40 as the only way the kit can be built. All of the parts are still there. -
AMT '39 / '40 Ford Sedan

Need to recheck your facts before saying the "'39 and '40 share very little in the way of common parts." You are correct on all the changes you listed, but steel metal. According to Ford themselves, most body sheet metal is shared between the '39 and '40 Fords. Evan using the exact same part numbers. -
AMT '40 Ford Coupe,
unclescott58 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The last one is not a coupe. Or even the same kit. That's AMT's '40 sedan labeled wrong by Ertl. Another one of Ertl's brilliant boxes. ? I've never built AMT's '40 coupe. I have the Lindberg one that many say is a inferior copy of the AMT coupe. I don't think it's too bad. I'd love to see someone do a side by side comparison between the two kits, to see if I really need add the AMT one to my collection. Or the Lindberg one is good enough. -
AMT '40 Ford Sedan Delivery
unclescott58 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Great kit. But, it can not be built as a 100% correct '40 Ford sedan delivery. AMT based this kit on their '40 Ford coupe backin the day. So the rear fenders and taillights are not correct. In fact the body is not right because it was designed to work the coupe kit's chassis and rear fenders. Despite this I love the kit. Just finish the Stooge version within the last month. Built mine simular to the one on the box. Installed the Buick nailhead rather than flathead. Beyond that, I built it to as close to stock as I could. And despite not being right, I think it looks great. -
Ah.... So it's not the AMT '73, but the MPC. All the better.

AMT '39 / '40 Ford Sedan
unclescott58 replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've got the Stevens International version shown above. It builds into a decent '40 Ford. But a terrible '39 Ford. Despite that, I'm going to build mine as a '39 right out of box. Only thing I'm debating on is whether to build it with the vent windows or not. They were not correct on the '39. But, neither is the dashboard or the locations the wipers and taillights. So no matter what it will not be correct for '39. One of AMT's old box art showed a '39 with the vent windows. I kind of like the looks of it. -
Luxury in the future?

Wow! Very nice.

Anybody know any details on this one. Is it the old AMT Mach I kit? Can it be built stock?

MPC/Round 2 - Pony Express is back from the grave!

Oh, and I love the Citation X-11 kit too. Going with the 1980 look on that. The '82 and later ones looked too slick. Not loser enough. -

Adam I love your reviews that can be reached through the link you left above. I'm so impressed with this and your other reviews, I bookmarked your site for future reference. For stuff. Keep them coming. I too like loser cars. And have a couple the kits you reviewed. Like the Daewoo LeMans. So bad I had to buy it. I'm glad to see I'm not the only crazy one who likes these cars. -

Oh! I did miss that! Good job Adam. ? -
Nice set of Cobras.

Harry your car in real life would have had body colored inserts in the door handles. They were part of options Z21 Style Trim package and Z22 Rally Sport package. Your model depicts a car with the Z22 Rally Sport package. So it should have body color inserts. But.... It's your model, so you can build it any way you want.

unclescott58 replied to Faust's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I like the link to the review of this kit, that you gave us Adam. The guy did a very good job reviewing it. I like that he confirmed what I suspected, that the kit can be built as just a plain Pinto wagon with a full set of windows. That's the version I plan on building. I was never all that keen on the Cruising Van version. -
Very nice. What paint did you use? I like the color.
