Beats my first car - a '62 Corvair coupe with lots of "flow-thru ventilation" (rust) and no heat! Still, no matter what car you get when you're 16, it's always a passport to paradise! Great job on the Chevelle, Ron! Brought back great memories of my older brother's '64 Malibu SS.

[quote name="Lovefordgalaxie" post="1092676" timestamp="1389876312" Not only a nice car, but also the kind of kit I find to be the absolute best: AMT 1960s tooling with metal axles!!! There is an engine to build, but there are not many parts at all to be a pain, and four little screws keep the chassis attached to the body. It can't get any better than this, in my opinion, of course. Tulip, you're not alone - I love those old screw-chassis kits! Beautiful job on this one!!!

Try contacting Dr Cranky for a consultation. I hear he's pretty good in analyzing such problems...... ;-)

Buying multiple issues of the same kit
ToyLvr replied to ChrisPflug's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
For many years, I used to buy two (2) or more of every kit that I really wanted to build. I figured that if I goofed-up the original, or encountered deformed or missing parts, I'd always have a backup kit. Because of this, I wound up with a lot of multiples of the same kit. (yes, I know that I could/should open the kits upon purchase and inspect the contents, but I prefer to keep them sealed until I'm ready to build). If everything went ok on the project, I would then sell or trade the extras. These days, since kits have gotten so expensive, I cannot afford to buy multiples. Besides, with resources like this MCM forum, I have a lot better chance of finding replacement parts if I run into trouble on an out-of-production kit. Otherwise, the only kits that I buy multiples of are the JoHan Chrysler Turbine car and anything related to the Chevy Corvair, since I'm crazy about both of these cars. What's the use in having a hobby if you can't obsess about it? ;-) -
Yup, that's the one. The "turn screw" was actually located midways under the wings. Turning the little knob would either extend or retract the landing gear. A little "toggle" lever on either side of that knob would release a bomb attached to the wing. I was absolutely fascinated by this as a kid (until I discovered Monogram's 1/32 "Gulfhawk", which had an even more ingenious landing gear mechanism). BTW, I think it was the MPC "Tiger Shark" (or originally the "Car Draft Dream Rod") that had the turntable.....

Who else has had a disaster build?

Pretty much sums up my attempt at building Revell's '57 Nomad back in the 70s.... -
Models in the movies
ToyLvr replied to ReptileGuy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
In the History Channel TV show "God, Guns, and Automobiles", the main character Mark Muller has an office loaded with with model cars. Hard to tell if they're all diecast or perhaps plastic. -
RIP andy granatelli
ToyLvr replied to Freeman Cars's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
We've lost another great car guy. Have been watching the movie "Herbie the Love Bug" with my grandson lately, and Andy made a cameo appearance in the film. -
Someone did a resin body of the '61/'62 Corvair wagon several years ago. Good luck finding one, though - very limited run. The donor kit was the JoHan '61 Olds F85 wagon. Once again, good luck finding one....

Hobby Shops... Are They Viable Today?
ToyLvr replied to Tom Geiger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Seems like this topic keeps coming up frequently here on the Forum, only under different titles. Same ol' discussion; Internet fans think that's the only way to go, whilst a lot of folks still like the brick-n-mortar shops("support your local business, etc etc). Reminds me of an article that appeared in a major 1:1 car magazine many years ago where the topic was whether we should all be buying American cars (and thus supporting American jobs) vs. buying foreign cars. As you can imagine, it resulted in a lot of heated comments in "Letters-To-The-Editor" on both sides of the issue. The best response that I saw, and remember to this day, is "Real Americans buy what they *WANT* " Same thing here. Doesn't matter who manufactured the kits or supplies, or what the retail source is, if we WANT it, we're gonna get it. It's great that we live in a country, and in this particular period of time, where we have a choice, and we're free to exercise that choice. Let's go build something.... -
'55, '56, '57 Chevy "El Caminos"
ToyLvr replied to farmer1's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Beautiful work, Randy! -
Back in the day, I owned a 1:1 '84 Fiero, and was a member of the national Fiero club. I saw photos of one where the owner swapped in a Caddy Northstar V-8. He said that things bolted-up pretty well to the stock Fiero, such as the aforementioned bell housing. The most common swap was to swipe the 3.1 Chevy V-6 out of a miniVan and drop it into the Fiero.

Nice job! I seem to recall seeing an old photo of the original Ford showcar, and it was painted what appeared to be pearl white. That's what I plan to do with mine, if/when I ever get around to finishing the kit I started years ago. I wonder if this kit, or Revell's multi-piece-body '60 Corvette, rank as the top of the list of unfinished builds....

Look closely at the photo of the red tail lights. In the same package, the clear headlight lens parts are visible.....
-
Ask, and ye shall receive... Note the separate red tail light lens, and the separate chrome runner with the tail light bezels. Interestingly, the one-piece promo style tail lights are still on the main chrome tree.

Mark: Sorry to hear of your bad luck! For the rest of you guys, be aware - it's the season for thieves to be more active. Also, while I enjoy the posts on the other thread in this forum (How Big Is Your Stash?), thieves can watch this forum (& others) to figure out who's got what, thus I don't ever post that sort of info.

Here's the MPC "Bearcat" for those who have never seen it . This is an original "survivor" from my personal collection. I built this as a kid nearly 40 years ago. Hard to believe that it had survived (mostly) intact all these years.

Yeah, there was a lot of eye candy in the mini series. However, in one scene they show Clyde stomping on the brakes and bringing the car to a screeching halt. Anyone who's driven an "A" or similar car of the 30s with mechanical brakes knows that ain't gonna happen...

Terry: Love 'em! I really have been enjoying all of the models in you recent posts. Please keep them coming!
