Sooooooooooooooooooooo.. which way is up?
Mike77 replied to impcon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw that truck in person last fall here at our town's annual "Harvest Days" festival. It was pretty cool and it definitely makes you look twice. As for the nuclear plant, yes they have one and I worked at the Braidwood Nuclear Station for 17 years with no ill effects. I have 4 eyes and no children so I'm perfectly normal! I also lived in Danville for 10 years (1970-1980) which may explain a few things. (Just kidding Bill! ) -
The resin 70" hi-rise Peterbilt sleeper I got from KJ @ Double Take arrived today and it's fantastic! If you're on the fence about getting one (or more) I say go for it! Thanks KJ

I've just recently gotten back into the truck building hobby and so far... JT(kilrathy10) and I completed a good trade, Jeff(gotnitro?) hooked me up with some wheels/tires for my current project, William(williamchevelleman) was also a great source of parts when I was doing a little 1/16 stuff. So far I've found that there's a great group of guys here who appreciate each others building styles and tastes in trucks!

Rack on front of big rigs, what is it?
Mike77 replied to Roadrunner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That rig has a dual identity...Peterbilt script and flaps on the front of a Kenworth! -
Truck Kits You've Scored Recently
Mike77 replied to Superpeterbilt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had a mini-score today, a Freightliner COE for $15 at Hobby Lobby. I went there for some paint and saw the kit on the bottom shelf with the plastic torn and one end flap pulled away from the box. I took it to one of the employees and asked if I could get it for a discount. She directed me to an assistant manager and I asked if he'd sell it at a discount from the $36.99 sticker (yes, they still use price stickers there). I told him I'd give $25 for it since I didn't know if it was a complete kit. He agreed with the stipulation that it couldn't be returned. We took it to the cashier, he told her it was $25, and after he walked away I whipped out the good 'ol 40%-coupon! He never said I couldn't use a coupon! When I got home and checked everything out...complete kit! -

Trailer Skirt Air Deflectors?

On a similar subject, have any modelers here put trailer tails on their models? -

I've always wanted to do a double-sleeper IH COE. I'm both envious and impressed that you beat me to it! -
Revell snap Peterbilt SD
Mike77 replied to Old Buckaroo's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Great build! -
Ahh...didn't know that, thanks. I'm just getting back into building 1/25 trucks after several years so I obviously have a lot of catching up to do!

Which Lonestar kit is better, Moebius or Revell? I've always been impressed with Revell kits but I've never had a Moebius kit so it's hard to make a comparison.

5-axle 1/16 Wrecker
Mike77 replied to Mike77's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks! I had to shrink the length and width of the Peterbilt sleeper to fit the Aerodyne roof. There's still a lot of work to do but it's getting there a little at a time. I haven't decided on a color for it but I can't paint anything until Spring anyway so I have time to think on it. -

I've started work on the winch housing and boom. Here's a quick pic with the boom extended... -
5-axle 1/16 Wrecker
Mike77 replied to Mike77's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
No updated pics, but I've decided to switch it from a Kenworth to a Peterbilt. For some reason after looking at more 1:1 wrecker pics on the web the Pete's just look tougher. Now I have to consider whether I want to extend the 359 kit hood or not. -
5-axle 1/16 Wrecker
Mike77 replied to Mike77's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words! This is going to be a winter-long project as I pretty much only work on it on my days off. Slowly but surely it'll get done though! -
5-axle 1/16 Wrecker
Mike77 replied to Mike77's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I've finally made some more progress on this project. Thanks to a fellow MCM forum member I now have an Aerodyne sleeper top, and I have a good start on the wrecker body. I've mocked-up everything here for a few photos... -
Thanks! Not to hijack this thread but I made that 1/16 351 ten years ago or so, based on a 1:1. I made this one, and many other 1/16 rigs, about 10 or 12 years ago for a guy on the east coast. I discovered last year that he posted pics of most of them on Flickr claiming that he built them. It's not a good feeling when you put a lot of work into a group of models for someone only to have them tell the world that he did the work.

Excellent, thank you very much for that!

Can someone please tell me how long the Monogram 1/12 '69 Camaro hood is from the center tip to the trailing edge of the cowl hi-rise? Thanks in advance!

5-axle 1/16 Wrecker
Mike77 replied to Mike77's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks guys! The lift axle tires are rubber ones that I got off Ebay. They're more of a super-single tire, about 1-3/8"-wide, so I figured they'd work well. For the front hi-float tires the kit tires are too narrow and the rubber super-single ones are too wide, so I basically spliced a couple of kit tires together to make a float tire that's a hair under 1"-wide. The wheels for both the lift axle and front are a combination of front and rear kit wheels, modified to acquire the width I needed. Ten West's 5-axle wrecker doesn't have a sleeper, mine will, and mine will probably have a longer wrecker body. I don't know how practical a wrecker as long as this would be in the real world, but I really don't care. That's the fun of model building, things don't have to be exactly as they would in real life, they just have to look cool! -
5-axle 1/16 Wrecker
Mike77 replied to Mike77's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Choices are obviously limited in 1/16. My original plan was a Peterbilt but now I've decided to go with a Kenworth and maybe upgrade the W900 a bit. I did a 4-axle 1/16 Pete years ago (pics below) but I wanted to take things to the next level. I'm trying to hunt down an Aerodyne sleeper top but if I can't find one I'll make it a flat top. Here's the Peterbilt I made about 10 years ago... -
Last year I started a 1/16-scale 5-axle wrecker, abandoned the project for various reasons, and sold all the parts. Life is a little better now so I'm starting again from scratch. It's a little over 30"-long as it sits so it'll be a bit longer once the wrecker body hangs over the tail end. I'll keep you guys posted on the build.

Yeah, I see that the Revell/Germany version of the KW will be reissued soon. I'm not sure why the price will be so high though.

I've been away from the forums here for a little over a year but I'm getting back into the swing of things truck model-wise. I was wondering if there's been any word of a reissue of the Monogram 1/16 Kenworth Aerodyne and/or flatbed trailer. I figured with the limited release of the Peterbilt 359 and Kenworth W-900 they might at least do the Aerodyne as well.
