    Sad to report that forum member Jon Valadez (FordWagonNut) passed away on January 18, 2017. He was a member of the Lake Michigan Model Car Club; Rob Cantwell announced his death at the monthly meeting last Saturday. According to the report, he was working on one of his cars in his garage and was overcome by carbon monoxide from a space heater. He was only 38 years old and a good friend to me and many others. Ten days before he died, his AMT '68 Torino convertible won first in its class in the Model of the Month voting at our January meeting. While I try to get photos of that one, here are a couple shots of his other builds (he was very fond of fullsize American '60s and '70s cars, especially Ford wagons). R.I.P., Jonny - you will be missed.

    Hope he went to a good home... (sorry, it was too easy...) Got three usable sets of wheels out of the molds today: Top to bottom: Car Craft Dream Rod T-bird wire wheels; same thing in 1/24 from the original Monogram '40 Ford pickup, and AMT '58 Impala steelies.

    As I've said before, the wire wheels from the Silhouette and '65 Riviera would be a natural, as well as a chromed set of those well-detailed open wheels from the '58 Impala and '59 El Camino.

    I can see the tow truck's bed rails in the second photo - anyone have a chrome tree to compare with it? Edit - Found a shot: Can anyone make out what's in the closed-off large rectangle at the bottom?

    Worked a trade deal with Tom P. for a '65 Imperial coupe builder; needs some cleanup and rechroming, but complete except wheel backs and axles - but I got those last week when I got the '61 Ford pickup custom wheels. (One thing - the rear bumper is from a '66 - see my trade ad.) Got a lot of rare wire wheels, hubcaps and wheelcovers cast - it's taking practice but I'm getting there.

    Handy if obscure hint: The custom rear bumper can be cut down to make a great patch panel for a Hubley '60 or '61 Ford wagon with damaged lower rear quarters (you'll need one for each side).

    Got some Smooth-On resin from a dealer over in Countryside today; thanks to Michael for all the advice - he really knows his product. I'm casting up the 1/24 scale T-bird wire wheels from the original Monogram '40 Ford pickup kit; they'll go on my Hubley '60 and '61 Ford wagons - also doing the wire wheels from the Car Craft Dream Rod for some future customs.

    Needs a bit more than AMT gave you to make a real '39 Deluxe, but it's a start. Wheels for just one example - you need the wide-5 rims from the '36 Ford, hubcaps from the original Monogram '40 Ford pickup (happy hunting) or Revell '40 Standard, and center adapters to mate the caps to the rims. Any resin outfits out there want to take a whack at a '39 detail set? As far as I know, you also need seats with the correct pattern, the '39 dash, more trim strips on the hood, wipers that mount above the windshield, a banjo steering wheel, and a floor shift - what else?

    Wish they could backdate it to the Car Craft Dream Rod. I picked up a set of its wire wheels at the Model Empire sale last year and poured a mold for them just last night - they're little jewels and I want to use them on a couple other custom jobs.

    Sorry Round2, but that parts pack is a real letdown. Leftovers from the current '57 Ford in chrome? What about the Styline front and rear treatments that are needed for the use of many of these parts and that retooled DeSoto bumper? Plus the '57 Chevy pieces. I swear, I ought to just start casting these things myself (see below)! Anyone need a set of those '61 Dodge wheelcovers we didn't get in the '49 Ford reissue? I think I'll do them next.

    A rare one - the Metalflake issue of the Revell '62 Valiant featured these 4-lug 13" Halibrands: Not sure if there was such a thing in real life? The drag version of the AMT '28 Model A sedan had four of these same wheels, also the '65 Bonneville used similar ones with machined center caps for the custom option:

    Do you mean the extended fine point tip you stick on the bottle? If so... After using the tip, I use a small corner piece of paper towel or napkin rolled to a fine point and insert it from the bottom up to soak up the glue - so far, so good.

    I've been using the Zona micro drill bits; so far so good. I have one #72 bit glued between two pieces of half-round Evergreen to make a 3/32" shank; chucked that into the little battery-operated grinder I got at Michael's a while back, and by using only one battery and a light touch on the switch it's like a powered pin vise.

    Snagged these wheels from a '61 Ford pickup; I'll be casting up some of these sharp-looking cone wheelcovers when they get here (fingers crossed I can pop all four out cleanly!). Now I'll have three different styles of cones I can make. Seems to be little if any tire melt; luck of the draw I guess?

    Update: Got a new '68 Charger body shell and glass from Revell today, so now I can do the roof swap on the '69. A bit of work, but since I've already done three roof swaps lately ('61 Bonneville, '58 Fairlane, '65 Continental) - and have been planning a fourth ('59 Pontiac), what's one more?

    Add '58 Edsel to that - I made my own by using the original '58 kit/promo bumpers; they're thick enough to cut off the guards without having to backfill them: You could salvage the '58 Plymouth bumpers from a junked Jo-Han promo; Modelhaus used to make wingless '58 bumpers if you can find a set. '53 Ford bumpers would be another good candidate; again Modelhaus made those before they closed.

    Please tell us more about that when you start using it - lucky guy! Just finding the Land Rover would be amazing enough.
