Hey Jesse, I was there, how about you? Are you coming up for Spirit of Speed?
-
Greatly appreciated Tim. I may have stopped building for awhile but I never stopped thinking about future projects. Old habit die hard and, besides, I don't want to miss the third car modeling renaissance !!!

I've been away from building for several years now. A few weeks ago Pryor Passorino called to ask if I was planning to attend the Spirit of Speed 2 at the NHRA museum and I was inspired to finish a project that has been stalled on my workbench since 2013. It is the Revell '31 Tudor painted with Testors lacquers (50:50 silver and purple metallic) clear coated with Valspar urethane. AMT parts pack small block with injection from the Double Dragster. Modelhaus wheels and tires, scratch built 3 point cage. I been working steadily on this one for a few weeks. Still need to finish the headers, mount the Moon tank and grille shell, do a little plumbing and she'll be good to go.

1971 Pinto Wagon Street Freak Showcar - Done!! 4-18
Marc Weller replied to Impalow's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Eric, This is really great work and it is inspiring me to get back into building. I had to go back and read my SAE article from 8/2001 as I couldn't recall how I did the gold leaf lettering on my Wheeler Dealer replica. My first attempts were with BMF (I still have the sheets of foil with my unsuccessful attempts!), but ultimately, I just laser printed outlines onto decal stock, hand painted the silver base and added the yellow and orange tints using tamiya transparent acrylics with a small brush. Thanks for giving me a reason to dust off this 20 year old model and do some needed repairs !!!- 172 replies

I'm sure you know there's a Riley head in the Revell '29 A Roadster Pickup kit. Perfect for your project (which I'm loving BTW). -
Group, I'm sure a few of you attended Speedweek this year. It is a very inspiring place for any car modeler !!! Here is a slide show of my pix from Speedweek 2016. https://youtu.be/VpXzZ70xP9g

NHRA Museum Models
Marc Weller replied to Marc Weller's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks guys, Unfortunately I have barely touched a model ever since !!! The new Revell Model A's may soon change that. -
It was great seeing the Barry Price collection in issue #201. Greg Sharp really did justice to the collection spending a tremendous amount of time finding supporting images for each model. I would like to clarify one point. Barry's shipping method did not adequately protect the models. While his Styrofoam fixtures were ingenious in design and well constructed, they were not up to the task of transoceanic shipping. The models were all damaged on arrival, some severely. As the go to "model guy" for the museum at that time, I was recruited to repair them !! So for an entire year, I showed up at the museum every couple of weeks to retrieve a few models and eventually they were all restored. Big Al was a nightmare as you might imagine !!! Anyway, the display is fabulous and is a must see for any modeler visiting Southern California. Marc Weller

Tennis Balls for Injectors
Marc Weller replied to Marc Weller's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
So many responses and so quickly !!! Thanks Guys, greatly appreciated. MW -
Group, I'd like to plug some 1/25th scale velocity stacks with tennis balls as was standard practice in the sixties. Any suggestions?
-
Great tips, thanks! What paint are you using for dry brushing?
-
It is based on a Dragmaster frame. Just do a search for Jim Nelson or Dragmaster and there will be plenty of information. The Revell Part Pack frame was a Chassis Research frame, another producer of off the shelf dragster frames in the mid century period. MW

Front Engine Dragster: The Old Master
Marc Weller replied to ApexSpeed's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Here's my favorite version of the Old Master. I built this 10 or 15 years ago using the Tony Nancy 1/16th scale FED by Revell and the 392 from the Aurora Racing Scenes series. Bruce Wheeler and Al Friedman were my heroes when I was a youngster and I spent a large portion of my adolescence hanging out at the speed shop where they worked. The model was on display at the NHRA Motorsports Museum for a number of years, along with my modest collection of Wheeler Dealer memorabilia. I even lettered my pickup as a tribute to that shop -
