yea- that Alfa 6c2500 looks best in a dark maroon- thats how I would build the Pocher- and with painted wheels-gloss black or maroon. to me that would really make that model more authentic. I was at a show 2 weeks ago and bought a small spray can of Tamiya TS-11 maroon and this color is leaning more towards the brown side you are talking about. -

that is rustoleum ''plastic''. claret wine. sprayed lightly over flat black primer to get the time worn look. there seem to be more shades of maroon lately -I always pick the darkest shade I can find for model cars. -

yes it is .David Greenlees [the oldmotor.com] who is the current caretaker of the car was nice enough to send me detailed photos of the car so I could build it for the Hemmings article.

WOW what a great story about the old Model t truck-I have seen photos of the trucks rigged to sawmills but never heard from anyone who actually seen- did it. those are bygone days.my Dads first car was a '23 T touring. the fuman kit does have a great engine. -
I thought you guys would like to see a Stutz with the Mercer wheels. this was built by my fellow brass builder John B.

me too-I say its Gray. have you seen this actual car run against a Stutz Bearcat on youtube? heres a MERCER barn find I built from a junk Aurora kit. at NNL 2011 -
OLD 16 had a 16.5 liter engine! its recorded top speed was 100 mph! the average lap speed was around 65 mph plus during the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup Race. this means it was probably hitting 90 mph on some parts of the course. I remember Peter Helck saying in a Road and track article that many times he had seen an 18 inch belch of flame coming from those side pipes!

heres a shot of the Peter Helck MERCER in 1/16- and the real one.

well the pics are kinda big- but here you can see the drag link and pitman arm made up as well as the hood straps and buckles from brass wire. the steering wheel has the ''kill button'' and wire mounted on one of the spokes. the spark and throttle levers and column. pedals and cockpit all in view with the moulding around cowl and body [solder] radiator and oil caps-all these things scratch built from the blueprints. the final chain drive and sprockets turned out very nice -a metal etch detail kit for a 1/8 motorcycle was used.

Right- that was Tony Koveleskis car-restored the second time in 1952. he started Scranton Hobbies and the Hudson old timers series. he passed away recently leaving one of the biggest antique toy collections in America. I talked about this a while back on Harrys Stutz post.

since you are interested in this Most Famous race car- heres some pics of a version I bought a few years back the model is 1/16 scale -scratch built in brass,- build date 1968-the builder was Richard Feil of Johnston RI. it has a very detailed engine.and chassis -trans and chain drive.weighs in at 4.5 lbs. Mr Feil used blueprints from Jim Ison to build the model.he offered to build one for Peter Helck although the deal never went through. he was an industrial designer-silverware seems to pop up now and then on ebay-I have seen about a dozen other antique cars he built. I know of 2 other versions of this car-mine is #5

Hi Rick- I used Floquil reefer gray-stinky stuff but flows nice and is tuff finish. there were lots of questions about the authenticity of grey tires at NNL and I have found out that besides white the early tires also came in gray and yellow. I didnt see an OLD 16 on ebay but saw the MERCER ITC- I take it Harry won that-excellent price considering the condition of the contents. [as good as it gets]

Hi Skip- that is a rear wheel you posted- the Mercer is similar. the bulges in the spokes are only found on rears in this era. they were like lug nuts fastening the brake drum.-you can see a carriage bolt going through each spoke.the front axles had no brakes so employed a lighter spoke in the wheel. most cars of the teens had pneumatic tires. however heavy trucks had solid rubber tires till the mid to late 20,s
