Nice truck, I like the stake bed, not the steak bed...

Mine was at age 7, it was the Roger Lindamood Color Me Gone Charger, my dad cut & trimmed all the pieces with his pocket knife while I glued everything together (with lots of glue!!!) Ahhh, the memories....

Monogram's 29 Model A roadster Pickup
RatRod replied to Pete L.'s topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I love Bob's clone, and if I hadn't watched him build it I would swear it was the real deal!!! Several years ago before I picked up the unbuilt originals pictured above, I did a custom clone using original parts from a glue bombed Blue Beetle that a friend gave me years ago. I started with the newest reissue of the '29 (molded in silver), and added the firewall, seats, bed cover, and engine parts, along with a set of tires & wheels from a Monogram Orange Hauler. I also had a set of drum brake covers from a Boot Hill Express that fit the rear axle perfectly. I used Dupli-Color bright aqua paint, and masked the valve covers, and painted the engine white, then re-plated the valve covers, and air cleaners with BMF. I had the original roll bar, but ended up making a new one using aluminum rod. This is what I came up with... Like Bob said, with a little help, and ingenuity something good will come!!! -

Every time I go to eBay, and type in "1929 ford" I see several of the Monogram RPU's!!! I sure wish they would back date that one!!! -

Lets see your older kits
RatRod replied to gray07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have so many old kits, but not all are photographed. Here's two old grails that I bought about 10 years ago, and built this past year.... From 1971, The Revell Harley drag bike.... From 1972, Revell Triumph drag bike.... One project scheduled for this year is this one from 1967.... -
No problem Shane, after priming, and painting with Krylon semi flat black, I used a soft 1/4" wide brush, and dry brushed the chute pack with some steel paint to bring out the details, then shot some dullcoat over it.....simple stuff. Thanks for all the reply's fellas!!!

I had started this build some 16 years ago using the Blueprinter double dragster kit, so I figured that it was time to finish it. It's straight out of the box, no added detail, just paint. Some times these old kits just look better that way, and I also tried for that old box art feel. I used buffing metalizers, and the paint on the body is cheap pearl fingernail polish!!!

Help with Goodyear tire decals for the Mongoose
RatRod replied to jlucky's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I use Shabo rub on tire lettering, and I heat the transfer up under a light bulb before using, works great. -
Very nicely done Tom!!! All your work is fabulous.
-
Really Jody? Why can't you just reply without pushing your stupid little forum... As for the Willys build, it's fantastic!!! Very, very clean, and beautiful paint work.

Another nice bubble top custom Charles!!! I am planning on doing one sometime too. Here's some history on the kit. The original box art... The second, and final reissues.... Here's a few pics of the original car.... I'm doing a stock version, and here's a pic of a slightly modified (modern) version I'm working on. Unfortunately the car is being restored by it's current owner (not Starbird) and it won't be to it's original condition....sad, but true.

Hardcore Scratchbuilding Question
RatRod replied to straightliner1's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Ahhh yes, the fine art of scratch building. Well, there have been many tutorials written over the years, I even did one last year on custom bikes. One has to have the drive, and ability to do such work, and a vast knowledge of what it is your trying to replicate. You also need to do as much research as humanly possible on the subject to get the feel of what it is that you intend to do. I know many people with the talent to create masterpieces, and people who just scratch build small items for more added detail (like myself) It really does help if you do have somewhat of a clue, an understanding about your subject, and how it works. If you have never really worked on, or ever rebuilt, or even studied the subject, it will be kinda hard to get the jest of what your doing. It also helps if you have the drive, and enthusiasm to follow through with, and complete your subject, even if it means several tries, and failures. Not everyone can do such things, and that's okay, it's all part of a hobby we love. If we all could be Gerald Wingrove's, then it would be easy. I'm not going to mention any names, as I don't want to offend anyone that I may have forgoten, but this forum alone has some of the best builders you'll get to know, just pay close attention to some of the awesome workbench stuff that is shared here, and good luck to all. -
Well Shane, here's my reply.....I LOVE IT!!! You did a fantastic job replicating this car, ugly? Yes, Cool? Very much so. I had just read an article not long ago about this car, and to see it done in scale is awesome. Lots of work there, and it all was worth it!!!

Ken, the Ramchargers & Multi Maverick tires are one in the same bud!!!
-
All good suggestions!!! I used an old set of Monogram showrod slicks, and a rare set of MPC Halibrands on mine. Anything that you choose from the above suggestions will be better than the oversized tires that come in that kit.... BTW, anybody wondering how to mount the parachute on this kit, here's what I did....
-
I think it's all been said about it, but that is one sweet build Dave!!! Love that color.
-
Thanks Drew!!! Geeeez, didn't even pay attention to who you were until a few minutes ago. I've always enjoyed your articles, and builds over the years, glad to see you here!!!

Very nice, the engine mods are a plus!!! I recently built one of these to, and did basically the same type of mods. I never really understood that peach color, I have done numerous hours of research trying to find pics of this car. The restored car is close, but still more orange.... I also came up with a picture of the car from 1969 when it was first built, look in the back of the truck.... Seeing the above pic, the car was a lot more orange, and so I went with HOK tangelo pearl on mine, but if you look closely at the second dragster, it has that peachy two tone... At any rate, the car needs mods, and those old showrod slicks gotta go!!! You did good on your build man!!!
-
What's not to like about a super clean Cal look bug!!! Another excellent build Randy!!!
-
Those rear slicks are from an original late 60's Monogram showrod, and have the raised line in the sidewall. The wheels I used were a one time only MPC wheel that were in the 1978 issue '28 RPU. It's a shame too, because these were the best detailed Halibrands MPC ever did. Here's the kit....
-
Thanks guys, I'm glad you all like it!! The paint used was HOK tangelo pearl topped off with two coats of Dupont 2 part urethane. Those front wheels are modified Herb Deeks white metal & photo-etched dragster wheels, and are no longer available.

Well then, call me wrong!!! I was born in '58, but don't remember anything that flashy, of course I was just a baby....right?
