  1. >I don't understand the uproar about this kit? What is wrong with it? well to me its not a great tragedy or anything, I just think its juvenile and kind of dumb. I doubt there will be many if any good parts in it to use elsewhere. I definitely know I like show rods but to me that's not what this is, its a cartoon. so all I was really saying is that I wonder if they think this is a necessary release or if it will sell a lot or what. kind of like the Pacer, in an entirely different genre, but WTH? I didn't realize there was such a pent up demand for something so mundane. but hey I will get over it (just avoid buying it unless I am shown different, could happen) and I don't think there was much of an uproar. but you know what they say: any publicity is good publicity. or at least that's what they told the Rolling Stones and it worked out ok for them. jb
  2. >With one exception hope you didn't mean me, I tried to be as civil as possible. you will notice I included myself amongst the old guys who will be passing (and passing the torch) on fairly soon. might as well face it. the question is, will the next to take the reins in the model world stay with the 57 chevys or will the lure of the exotic get them too (exotic, as well as the practical...another thing to face is that the big gas guzzling V8 is no longer appropriate nor necessary, not when you have muy efficient 6ers putting out close to 400 horses in a car with a curb weight down near 3000lbs). jb
  3. try using a Nissan Cube as a tow vehicle for a Mooneyes dragster sometime! most comments are in the area of: hey shouldn't that be a 60 Ford pickup truck? no, not in my world it shouldn't be. those old people will be dead soon enough anyhow. that includes myself. sits too high, should have used lower profile and smaller tires so they would tuck up under the fenders more: in real life I want one of these: slot car jb
  4. the Edelbrock name would not be necessary on the part I need and actually 1/24 or 1/25 would not make a big difference. I have a couple leads already but if they don't turn out I will check into those NASCAR kits (may have one buried somewhere but they were never my interest). thanks for the replys and leads! jb
  5. looks like the poor thing has had a very hard life. in a very hostile climate. does it start and run? jb
  6. heres something maybe nobody else has noticed: the box is too small. the chrome sprue is too long to fit in it without it being at an angle to the top and bottom. the frame is the same: too long to fit comfortably flat in the box. the box is also too small to fit the iron on transfer that is included...it has to be wrinkled up both top and bottom and left and right. probably wouldn't hurt anything but the question is why? I guess so it would fit into a standard box, but it sure doesn't fit comfortably and flat, which is how I prefer to store anything prone to warpage like that exquisite frame. other thing is, there isn't much weight there. durn box feels empty. just an observation...would feel much more substantial with some extras included somehow. jb
  7. Skip, you mention their reducer. This question will probably reveal my ignorance as far as airbrush goes, but is a reducer the same as a thinner? reason I ask is because I bought some of this wicked color paint a while ago and only tried it once. when I did I used their reducer to thin it out. but what it seemed to do was make it puddle up and not dry. I was shooting at my normal 20 - 25 psi and I just could not get it to work. a friend of mine with more experience than I suggested that the reducer was not to be used as a thinner but was more to reduce the amount of color or something (really didn't follow what he was saying). I just wrote it off but now I am curious...what is this reducer stuff and how is it different from thinner? I was to thin the viscosity of the liquid, not the color. if reducer is not for that, what is? would this stuff thin with distilled water? I tried lacquer thinner and it immediately turned into a goopy mess that clogged my airbrush. any pointers would be appreciated, I would like to use this paint. I already found out about the semigloss finish but I can deal with that with Future. thanks jb
  8. hey thanks all, Jeremy I can't text you but I sent you a PM, get back to me if you can, otherwise I will try to locate that Petty kit. sorry about the stupid misspelling...it was my dyslexia attacking! jb
  9. "chick mobile", yeah I like that. so while all the guys are crowded around your pick em up truck, all the girls are crowded around my lowered BRG 91 Miata asking for a ride sometime. I like cars that girls like. not sure what it says when you prefer cars guys like but Detroit seems to have made a living from supplying them to guys unsure of themselves, "down there". and I like that new design. any of you yokels ever hear of a Lotus Elan? I know its not a 57 chevy or some "manly" car with a big penile implant under the hood but it did have some style and finesse to it, traits that carried over to its Japanese cousin. yeah that's gay, I know. jb
  10. (edited to use the right brand name!) hi all I need an edelbrock intake manifold for a 4 bbl carb to somewhat hopefully match the one my friend has on a car I am building a model of for him. here are a couple photos of it. if anyone knows of anything like this out in the resin/aftermarket world, please let me know. I am pretty well convinced nothing like this ever came in a plastic kit, but if you know otherwise please let me know about that as well. many thanks in advance! jb
  11. >He gets it He falls for it. jb
  12. well at least that one there seemed to be way ahead of its time in one department
  13. that turned out great! lots of nice detailing going on there. jb
  14. >Specific (runner up): Mr Hobby Volkswagen Karman Ghia Convertible. The body is nicely done, great wheels and tires, >but some of the parts, such as the seats and convertible boot are almost rubbery and were impossible to glue down. that must be the Gunze Sangyo (at one time imported by Mr Hobby I think) Ghia. that upholstery rubbery material they use is very hard to work with and in most cases I have just replaced it. but I have found that 5 minute epoxy works well for holding it in place, and I recommend a thin even coat on both pieces with not much wiggle room for adjustment unfortunately, once they contact they hold together! it does look pretty convincing for vinyl upholstery and the door inside panels in the TR2/3 models were really nicely engraved, a shame to ditch... jb
  15. >What part of town where they in? I live near a small "town" of Walnut Grove, on the Sacramento River on its way to the outer reaches of the San Francisco bay. its a pretty scenic place and car clubs of all types come through here on a regular basis. I was posted up in my usual morning coffee spot and they came through, a parade of at least 25 cars, all stopping at the stop sign in front of where I hang out. all kinds of cars, new and old, common and exotic, make it through here on a daily basis. then there are the motorcycles and bicycles...500 of each on separate days over the past 2 weeks. jb
  16. R&MofM wire wheel vs Tony Nancy front wheel: well worth it and that set I kind of botched assembly...second set came out much better, though cant really see the flaws in the photo jb
  17. plus, just call me a dim bulb to have only now noticed this, but it meant to depict a dog catcher. NO ONE likes the dog catcher. jb
  18. >I like wacky show rods. Had fun with them when I was a kid, so yes, it is mostly a nostalgia thing for me normally I would be right there with you on that. but in this instance...naw. its not even "wacky show rod" status. bring back the XR-6 for wacky show rod. jb
  19. looks like round 2 is circling the drain releasing this dreck. wonder who they figure they will sell that junk to? 8 year old kids, bought by mom for Christmas? Give it up. jb
  20. needed a stand to build a 1/8 scale motor for future project. here it is still drying. some plexiglass scrap, some sheet plastic and aluminum rod and there you have it. probably won't paint. kinda fun little project. jb
  21. nothing wrong with that. its his dime, let him rant on. jb
  22. that's a wild looking skyline, for sure. I see more and more tilted headlamps like that too. what seemed like it must have been a Datsun club came through town the other day and there were all these great 510s and other cars, a lot of them were updated to that current style. jb
  23. more fun than a barrel of monkees. if you had done that model back then for Ed Roth, it would have been picked for sure! jb
  24. most excellent as always. hey Norm: do a The Thing (note proper use of the cars actual name: "The Thing") next! jb
  25. get a catalogue from Norm; it has photos of pretty much all the parts he himself offers. I make that distinction because he carries a bunch of other stuff too that might not be pictured. I make taillights with 5 min epoxy with a bit of Tamiya clear red mixed in. then if it turns out too light and subtle, which it often does, I color over the top with a red sharpie pen. also back your lenses with something either painted chrome silver or covered in BMF for more reflectivity and a lighter overall look. can't hardly see them here and in this mockup photo the bezels are a bit too thick, but these are some taillights I made that way with brass bezels: jb
