1968 Olds 442 Wheel Options
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That is a thought, but I have recently done a little business with Bob Spedding with decals and I have a sense that it might be quite difficult to make such small lettering readable. If they aren't perfectly crisp and clear, I don't think it would pay to mess with them. It's something to ponder though. Steve -

Thanks Steve! Do you happen to know it they are nicer than some of the other wheels already mentioned? I had one of these kits when I was a kid, but of course I have no memory of the wheels. Steve -

1968 Olds 442 Wheel Options

I picked up a set of '68-'72 Olds caps from Missing Link, and although they are not entirely accurate, they are close enough for me. Not surprisingly, they do not have the Oldsmobile lettering. I'm guessing that it would be very difficult to reproduce in resin considering how small the lettering would be. Plus the fact that it would likely be obliterated by plating anyway. They do but the Olds crest caps are not accurate for '68 Those particular caps are supposedly for 1966 and '67. The unique vertical stripes are one of my favorite aspects of the '68 442. It's what makes it instantly identifiable as a '68. The only decision that I have yet to make is the stripe and top color. Either black or white. Steve -
Looking sharp! Steve

What Did You Have for Dinner?

Yup, all there. I wish they weren't because there's really no place to get decent BBQ around here! Steve -
If I knew what a quid was, I'd be impressed........or not? Steve

I tend to get a little "snarky" as you call it, when individuals begin to feel that they are somehow entitled to dictate the content of the forum. I did say it was ugly, along with more than a half dozen other members. That is my opinion and I didn't think that anyone was going to take a negative comment about a car that they have no connection to so personally. Since then I have been merely countering the contention that only certain sentiments are allowed in a thread. As far as the "yawn" goes, if I said it at all, some context might be more "productive". Don't sweat it guys, I think that "Duke" was just trying to make a point and twist the knife a little in response to another thread. I didn't take the bait. Steve

1968 Olds 442 Wheel Options

Likewise, I looked at the set in the Chevelle and the Lindberg '67 442 kits and they are both equally as nice. The ones in the Olds are definitely much smaller than the Chevelle wheels. My guess is that the Olds wheels are supposed to represent a 14" wheel, and the Chevelle 15"? Although there appears to be much more difference than that. If I use them, I will use the ones from the Chevelle. Steve -
I have to agree with everyone who is of the opinion that the '68/'69 Coronet would likely not be a viable option for a new tool. In today's market, a subject needs to be able to be marketed in several different incarnations to justify the cost. The only real hope in my opinion, is if enough of the original MPC tools exist to be able to cobble together a kit using the guts from the AMT GTX/Road Runner kits. I highly doubt that Moebius will take this one on, and I really don't see Revell doing it, so that would leave Round 2. I have a sneaking suspicion that the tooling for the original MPC kits no longer exists, so there's little chance that Round 2 will be taking that leap either. Steve

Lowrider-ish Narrow White Walls
StevenGuthmiller replied to Joe Handley's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
In case you're interested, Some of the online hobby shops offer the Moebius '65 Plymouth Satellite tires. They're really nice "narrowish" early to mid 60s white walls. Model Roundup has them for $6.90 a set. I used a set on my '67 Ford Galaxie. They look period perfect to me. Steve -

Nothing is set in stone yet Monty. I'm still not certain myself. I have a set of dog dish caps and a couple of sets of Magnums. I will just need to make a decision before I look for a set of tires. If I go with the Magnums, I will use white lettered tires. I'm not much of a fan of red lines anyway, but I feel like they look better with steel wheels. Steve -

That's exactly what I did. Steve -
I enjoy immensely working on unusual subjects. Not so much that the 1:1 is that unusual, but the kit definitely is! I also really appreciate unusual color combinations. I don't get excited about the same old, same old. Steve

Absolutely Roger. I'm not trying to change your mind on anything. Just my observation. Sometimes there are things that don't click in my mind while working on a project and I value all opinions and thoughts. Steve

1968 Olds 442 Wheel Options
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for all of the insight guys! I appreciate the help. Thanks Mike! This is exactly the sort of definitive wisdom I was looking for to help me make an informed decision. Now the next question is, is there a kit out there that has a REALLY NICE set of GM steel wheels? I know there are several kits like the AMT '62 Catalina that have steelies, but they're pretty cheesy. Right now I'm leaning towards some vintage Johan steel wheels from a '67 Plymouth Fury kit that are exceptionally nice, but I recall running across some really nice chrome steelies in one of my many kits some time ago that I could strip, but of course, I can't remember which kit. Any help with locating some nice steelies would be very helpful. I think I'm going with the poverty caps and red lines. Steve -

Okay. So as long as there are no critical opinions we're good? Just trying to get a handle on the rules. Steve -

I guess I just have to ask the question being as it seems to come up so frequently on some threads. Would it be better if only people who have the exact same opinion on a particular subject were allowed to comment on it? Would this type of scenario be more desirable? "Golden Sahara Restored". "I like it!" "Cool!" "I like it!" "Cool!" "I like it!" "Cool!" Sounds like a pretty exciting conversation. Steve -
Absolutely! A large percentage of the blame goes to the colleges and universities for being more concerned with packing the classrooms with students, padding their wallets and advancing their political views than they are with producing viable members of society. The parents need to be a little more proactive as well when little Betty Lou comes home and says she wants to major in ethnic studies! Steve

Hi guys. I'm still trying to make a final decision on what factory stock wheels I will be using on my '68 Olds 442 project, but I need a little bit of information first. I really don't care for the Oldsmobile rally wheels, so those are out. My question is, were the Magnums still an option on the '68 Oldsmobiles? I'm still trying to decide if I want to steal a set of Magnums from either the AMT '66 or the Lindberg '67 along with some white lettered tires, or if I want to go with the painted steelies and dog dish caps along with some red line tires. But first I need to know if the Magnums were an option or not in '68. I seem to see nearly as many '68s with Magnums as rallys, but I'm sure some f you will know for certain. Steve

I think it looks pretty nice so far, but just my personal taste.......I hate those tear drop hood scoops! They always just looked big, bulky and like a huge after thought to me. I'm not much of a fan of the star wheels either, but these are just my opinions Steve
