Dullcote for chrome?
Goodwrench3 replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The other stuff that works really nice is "Tree House Studio clear acrylic matt coating" -- you can get it at Hobby Lobby. I have used Testors Dullcote too on the Monogram chrome wheels in the NASCAR kits and it works nicely too. -
Sanding the Salvinos JR 1/24 kit tires ?
Goodwrench3 replied to Goodwrench3's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for the tip on the denim -- it worked well. -
Ok -- I'm trying something new. Start to finish in under 30 days. Yes, I need to let go of all that "perfectionism". Nothing ever is, and all I've ended up with for years is partly built kits. Here she is. Body is on and now for the decals. No -- the paint job isn't perfect. And I'm OK with that. I'm going to FINISH this kit and have it on my shelf to enjoy !!

Sanding the Salvinos JR 1/24 kit tires ?
Goodwrench3 replied to Goodwrench3's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Yeah this isn't just a little bit of "flash" this is a big "step" in them. If you have seen the tires that are in the 1/24 Salvinos JR NASCAR kits you know what I mean. These are the Monogram molds, but they had to create new tires from scratch -- they aren't the usual Monogram tires. With sandpaper I would probably go through 2 or 3 drill motors before it was removed. If these were the Monogram tires, yes, I'd just just 400 or 600 grit on the tread surface and not touch anything else. These are a different animal. I'll post a pic later. -
Hi all: Have any of you found a good way to remove the mold seam or "step" from the inner side wall of the 1/24 Salvinos JR (Monogram kits) kit tires ? I've removed it using a nail file while turning the tire on a socket with my drill, but now I'm not sure how to remove the "roughness" and return the side wall to a smooth lustre finish ?

Tamiya panel line accent
Goodwrench3 replied to ksnow's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm doing a little test tonight. I took a chrome plated wheel from one of my kits -- I sprayed it with Testors Dullcote (lacquer). Tomorrow I'll throw some Tamiya black panel line on it and see what happens. Stay tuned ... -
Tamiya panel line accent
Goodwrench3 replied to ksnow's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Interesting. Chris (YouTube channel "hpiguys") uses Tamiya black pane accent as a wash in a lot of his build reviews. He does use it on chrome plated parts that he has sprayed clear matt over. Doesn't seem to have a problem. Usually he is using Rustoleum 2X Matt Clear (which I thought was enamel, but maybe not), and hasn't had a problem. Here's a video where he as done that matt clear and the the Tamiya black panel accent: You can see in this video how he has applied the Tamiya black panel accent to the headlight areas (which were clear coated with a matt clear spray paint ) and it hasn't destroyed the finish. I just sprayed some Salvinos JR chrome wheels (the same wheels as in the kit shown in the YouTube video) with Testors Dullcote # 1260 (Lacquer) and was hoping to just dip a toothpick tip into the Tamiya black panel accent and "touch" it to the holes in the wheels. So is it just pure "enamel" that it "eats" ? -
Hi all: Following the advice of another post on this forum, I'm trying to use brake fluid to strip the paint from a part. Well, it's been in a bath of Pennzoil "Super heavy duty" brake fluid for 2 days and the paint appears no where close to coming off. Even rubbing it with a toothpick -- nothing comes off. The paint is Rustoleum flat black primer with a top coat of Rustoleum "Universal metallic dark steel". Do I need to use something else to strip the paint ? Or is Pennzoil just the wrong "brand" of brake fluid ? Thanks.

So -- apply the MicroSet first to the molded gauge, then lay the decal on, then apply the MicroSol ?

Brush paint for "dirty white" window nets ?
Goodwrench3 replied to Goodwrench3's topic in WIP: NASCAR
Yeah it sure looks more gray than white in that photo! -
Thanks !

Hi all: I was wondering if you have found a good brush paint color for the "dirty white" window nets on the early '80's NASCAR cars ? I'm working on the Bobby Allison '82 Gatorade Buick (Salvinos JR kit) at the moment and the box photo shows a good picture of what as best as I can describe it would be "dirty white". Thanks !

Hi all: I'm working on the '82 Bobby Allison Gatorade Buick (Salvinos JR kit) and I'm sure I'm going to need to use some decal solution to get the gauge decals to "snuggle down". What kind of decal solution have you been using with the Powerslide decals ? Any tips for the gauge decals (they actually look a bit big for the Monogram molded gauges) ? Thanks!

I've been using Devcon 5-min epoxy over the last week or so to glue the chrome engine parts to the plastic block in the Salvinos JR NASCAR kits. I use about the diameter of a nickel of each part, mix for about 30 seconds with a toothpick and apply immediately. Gives me about 2-3 minutes positioning time and then shortly after it's locked in.

Check out Chris's YouTube video of his builds. He truly shows how to just "git 'er done" ! And his builds look really nice -- and he does them in 2 days !

Salvino's Bobby Allison Gatorade "Flat Nose" Monte Carlo
Goodwrench3 replied to Art Laski's topic in WIP: NASCAR
Thank you ! I was thinking either that or 2-part epoxy. On the Salvinos JR Facebook page Shoe-goo was recommended. Also -- where did you find that oil filter decal ? Nice touch !! I'd like to find a AC-Delco filter decal -- I'm building the Buick. Like Chuck Yaeger always said: "they don't just fit -- they match !" ? -

What did you end up using to glue the chrome parts ? This stuff is "real" chrome -- very hard and not stuff you can easily scrape off before gluing. Thanks!
