If I'm not mistaken, in the old 359 kit the compressor is belt driven off of the rear accessory drive. I don't think that I would change any of that. The simplest conversion would be to get the manifolds, pipes, turbo set up and probably blower out of the AMT Aerodyne cab KW. The reissued Papa Truck would be a good source. If you can't source those parts, you would have to scratch build them. Scratch building the manifolds may prove a little tricky. I've never personally converted one exactly this way, but it shouldn't be much trouble. I've made a homemade rear turbo set up on one, but you won't have room for that. Hope this helps, Brian

Thanks for posting those bed specs. I've been wanting to do one of those. Now I don't have to get out the measuring tape on my truck. -

As a "general rule" a standard cab long bed 4x4 will have a single rear shaft. Two wheel drive and crew cabs are a different story, and in life there is always exceptions to the general rule. For your project I think a single shaft would be a simple logical choice. My square body that I just got home in has a single rear shaft. -

The 78 would have had a 5.7. They were basically converted Olds engines. I'm not familiar enough with car kits to tell you what to look for, but if you could find a 350 Olds the conversion should be simple, especially in scale. All old Chevrolet diesels that I've seen have factory duel exhaust that exits behind the tires. You should be able to image search 5.7 Chevrolet Diesel, or 5.7 Olds diesel. -

Well, I've decided to move forward with the Cat. These trucks were definitely the exception to the rule, but I'm pretty confident that they were available, at least for a time. Here is an 88 with a 3406. Here's a 90 model with a 3406. And of course the 81. -

The 87 brochure says that the 3406 was unavailable in the LN, but it doesn't say that under the tandem (LNT). Strange though, my friends were LNs with tags. I knew that they would have been unusual which is the reason I went this route. I wasn't even considering power as I was figuring on the "Economy" 3406 in the lower horsepower ranges. If they were non-existent, then I will go with another power plant. I'm wanting this to represent around an 81 or earlier model. -

Here's the dog house on this truck with the Cat. You guys have almost gotten me talked into changing engines. If we can decide that this one is something other than a 3406 I will. My friend had two with 6 cylinder Cats in them that looked like this. Both were short hoods. He said that they were both 3406s. I never looked very closely at them, I just took him at his word. As you can see, there isn't much to see under the hood anyway. The Monogram 3406 after I slightly modified the intake measures 2.05 inches high by 2.05 inches long. The Cummins out of the AMT KW measures 1.85 inches long and 1.95 inches high. In 1:1 that would make the Cat (if the model is right) about 2.5 inches taller and 5 inches longer. -
