I thought I'd throw this in. I get the poster board size foam board from Dollar General. I use it for a work surface. It's white so it's easy to see my work. It holds pins well enough for smaller parts. When 1 side gets crummy just flip it over. It makes a good cutting mat. The down side is if it gets wet the paper delaminates. I cover it with waxed paper when I wet sand etc. The best part is it's inexpensive, about a dollar a sheet.

Ideas vrs. talent
b-body fan replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I do the best I can. I try to push it a little further with each build. This is a great forum to get ideas on how to make things easier to do. Maybe better put a better way. Anyhow I just have fun with it. I'm not entering any contests. (I did buy a bunch of parts kits off of eBay to practice on.Can't hurt and was fairly inexpensive.) -
Thought I'd add this. If you ever build this kit, there are some parting lines on top of the rear quarters just at the bottom rear of the back windows. They are very small. I didn't catch them till after primer. Drivers front fender had a small ding just above the marker lamp.(I don't know if this is a mold defect or on just the one I have. Hope this helps someone.

Those do look good. May consider that.

Fabbed this scoop up using styrene. Thought it came out good for a first try at it. It's under primer. Needs a little fill work, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. The car is going to be a mild street machine. No real extensive mods. Pretty much the hood and rear wheel wells, and maybe some interior touches. A dual quad Hemi and a 4 speed trans. Always open to suggestions. Thanks, Mike.

I don't know if this will revive an older thread but... I had a happy accident taking photos of my model. I sat it on my porch rail to catch the sun. (It really needs paint). It is about 5 feet off the ground. I took the picture from about 3 feet or so away and a slight downward angle. It kind of put the background in scale. I just thought it was kind of cool.

2'n 1 kits good or bad?
b-body fan replied to Luc Janssens's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Got an AMT 69 GTX kit. Came with 2 sets of wheels,a stock and a narrowed coil over set up, a 440 with a single quad and a 6 pack set up, and a Hemi with dual quad and cross ram intakes, plus several exhaust options, and wheel tubs. Love it. I build alot of mopars the extra parts are sweet. -

I'm usually good about allowing ample drying time between coats. You brought up solvent popping (indirectly). Another good point. Thanks. -

I hear you. That's pretty much what I do. Just trying to save some time. My worst fear is it will raise its ugly head after awhile. Not all reactions are instant. Thanks again for your help. -

Sorry for the double post. When I was in my early teens or so there was pretty much Testors or nothing it seemed. I made things a little simpler. Back then most true automotive finishes would eat plastic. There is sooooo much more available now. At least from my perspective. Thanks again, Mike. -

I was thinking more of when I'm in a position where I have for instance, all the enamels for a particular model but first the perfect body color in acrylic. Seems like a shame to buy several colors that I have if I don't need to. I'm not trying to do any science experiments. I was thinking more about why buy something I don't need, or buy what I need rather than ruin a model. -
I used to paint my primer, then a " rust " coat. Then clear it with future or any clear. Lay on some color. Sand away the color down to the rust where you want it. I think if you clear over the decals this would work well. After that a light white wash makes it look faded if you want. Testors Dulcote to finish it up! Hope this helps. Mike.

Has anyone ever put up a chart about using different paints. I.e.you can paint enamel over lacquer but not visa-versa? Someone in the know could probably help the rest of us save a paint job some day. Thanks, Mike.

Full mock up. A lot is still not glued together. Going to do some touch up's that show up in pics that are hard to see otherwise. Really wanted the see how it photographed also.

Little progress here. Mocked up engine bay. Gonna add a few more details and do some touch up's. Not going to do much more to the carb or intake since I'm going to put an air cleaner on when I get the correct part. Also did a little work on the wheels. What's the best way to put on raised white letters? Having trouble with that for some reason. Thanks everyone for your input.

Recently got back into this great hobby. As I approach 50 I finally have the time and patience for it again.(sorta). I've been browsing this site for an few days now. It is awesome. Seems like a great group of folks. Some of the projects on here are truly inspired. Looking forward to more. Keep it up, Mike.
