Added some detail to the front air dam. I'm having a difficult time trying to make the thrusters moveable. I can get them to rotate up/down, but I want a full range of motion. This might be too difficult for me to attempt. I'll keep trying...... Still not sure what the final product will be. The front air dam reminds me of today's tuner cars. I'm thinking tuner/race/jet bug. Dirty and some rust of course.
-
I should put a disclaimer. The following photos may not reflect the final product! I made this front chin splitter, Is that what it's called? It looks cool. Reminds me of a Porsche. I'm still going with the plan of independent, moveable jets. The splitter would be stationary. Full speed mode with the jets retracted up tight under the body. Maneuvering mode with the jets extended. Hydraulic cylinders, hoses and wires exposed is the plan t this point.
-
I'm using the stock rear suspension to hold the rear jets. The rear tubs are each made from half of a fuel tank from a semi. I'm thinking white. I love lowered white bugs! Although, I keep picturing "Herbie the Love Bug" from the old 70's movies. This would be Herbie's older brother "Hank the Ex-con Bug".

I agree with this! Thank you all for the positive comments!!! So many great model builders on this forum, it's an honor. Here's a few photos of the first Jet rod I built last year. Wanted to show it off again.......Thanks guys!

Got a VW bug from my son for Christmas. Gave it the treatment. I want the thrusters to fit up tight when it's in full speed mode. I want it to resemble a lowered Bug in flight. It will have heat shields and deflectors on the doors to protect them from melting. Covered in soot of course! In take off or maneuvering mode the thrusters will point downward and hopefully move away from the body. They need room to pivot and turn from side to side. Don't know how I want to achieve this. I'd like them to create a gap of about 1/4" from the fenders so that you can see the inner workings. We'll see how it goes. Not sure if I want to mess with that many moving parts. Either way they'll definitely have downward movement like the photos below.

I say go for it! I'm a slow builder. It'll take me 6 months before I'm ready to start my next model. I'm not even sure if I'll start a JetVette. Fiberglass and rust do not mix. All my models come complete with rust, so the Vette was really just a thought. Such a cool body style. I bet we could both start with the exact same car and we'd end up with two totally different looking beasts anyways.. My son has been asking me to build a Dieselpunk chopper. This might be where I'm headed after the Beetle is finished,

The chopped rat rod and the Diablo are outstanding! Nice details.

The next project was started just after Christmas. I love VW Bugs. I'll be going with another weathered look. White? Or that light blue 60's color? What vehicle are you planning on using? I'm looking forward to seeing it!!

Here's where it started. It was blue for about a week. It didn't feel right. Gundam parts make excellent Nitrous canisters. Landing skids. They pivot downwards with the turbines. The rear skids also have slight downward movement. There's lots of unnecessary hoses going into a lot of unnecessary holes......That center block with the 2 vents and the 6 smaller hoses is a half of a 4 cylinder engine block. The majority of the hoses are thin styrene rod. Heat shrink tubing works great too, but I only had a few small pieces. ,

32 Ford Jet Rod - Hover car This was fun. I loved working on this car. At some point I had to stop adding new gadgets and stop with the weathering, and just call it complete. This turned out so much better than I had originally planned. This car went through 4 different paint schemes over the past 6 months. Red and white was my original vision, but I was afraid that the red wouldn't show well with the rust. I was wrong, it turned out great. The front turbines have a slight up/down, side to side movement. The rear side thrusters can also be moved slightly. I borrowed a lot of parts from a lot of different kits. Most notable was the front chin spoiler from a 71 Hemi Cuda that I used for the front visor. The front turbines were from a A-10 Warthog 1/44 scale kit that I got for under $7! There's a flight computer under the hood, made from a Ford Raptor navigation system. I even looked through some of my sons Gundam models and found some cool canisters that look like they hold Nitrous. They're really difficult to see, but if you look thru the "driver's" window, they're down low where the driver's right hand would be. I love adding little details that you have to search for. Great kit! Was a blast to work on. Hope you like it!

I got a 68 Volkswagen Bug kit for Christmas. I'm excited to start. I love the look of a slammed Bug. If I do a JetBug, I want it to have that lowered stance, but yet have the look of being able to fly. Over the weekend I added the door handle, a side mirror, and soot. Still a few last items to do. I had two side mirrors at one point about a week ago. Now I only have the left side mirror. Lost into the carpet abyss forever........Now I need to scavenge 2 more side mirrors that fit the look of the car. Or I leave it asymmetrical. Looks kinda cool like that, but I still think it needs 2 mirrors. Front turn signals. I've looked through all my extra parts. Can't find anything suitable. I'm going to have to make something. I hope to have it finished soon. Thanks again for all the positive comments.

Here's the undercarriage. Working on the hoses tonight. If I do another jet vehicle, I've been thinking about a JetVette. It looks like it should be flying. Or a JetBug. Of the two, it'll most likely be the Volkswagen. I've been wanting to build a bug forever. I can just imagine all the stuff that I can jam into that little engine compartment.

It's getting close. The rear engine compartment is done. The fuel tank and flight computer area under the hood is done. The interior is finished - note the 3 blue canisters next to the driver's seat (when 5 jet turbines are just not fast enough......add Nitrous) I added the windows last night. I left the left window in a slight rolled down position. Things left to do: Make the hood fit correctly.....Since day one, this has been giving me grief. I should have fixed it day one instead of waiting until it was near completion. Hoses and wiring under the frame. Loose hydraulic lines and fuel lines that hang low enough to be visible from a side view. Final exterior accessories. Front turn signals. Side mirrors. I would love to find a decorative hood ornament. If anyone knows a cheap solution, please let me know. I would prefer to not have to buy a whole kit for one small piece. I'm thinking the ornaments that were on the old Cadillacs. Front flap linkage. This is a problem. In hindsight, I should have done this another way. When I want to remove the hood, I have to disconnect the linkage. Nobody said Dieselpunk was supposed to be practical..... Final glue. Final paint on the few items that are bare plastic. Final weathering. Soot on all surfaces behind the front jet exhaust. It also needs a dullcoat. Add a sun visor over the world's smallest front windshield. Make a diorama.......I have 6 months until the Kansas City model show. I think I might be able to accomplish this. I want it to be flying over a wasteland, kicking up dirt as it banks to the right. The front and 2 side rear jets are moveable (slightly). I could position the jets to simulate a sharp banked turn. I have seen some amazing dioramas of rally cars that use a cotton like fabric to fabricate realistic dust clouds. I'm going to look into this when the model is finished. Again, thank you for all of the positive comments. I showed them to my wife and kids. I appreciate it.

Started on the interior last night. It's looking good. Getting excited about the interior now, even though it will barely be seen. Here's a few pictures of the flight computer and wiring.

Thank you for the great comments! Here's the finished center exhaust. I added 5 slats where the fake vent was. Looks so much better! I'm adding a flight computer that will be installed under the hood. I took the navigation dashboard controls out of a Ford Raptor kit that I was never going to build. I have a thin piece of transparent blue acetate that I plan on using for the monitor screen, to give it some depth. Hopefully it works.

I removed the false exhaust vent at the rear and put in some hinged flaps. Not sure what I'm going to do with the inner workings in that exhaust cavity. Maybe more I'll add some inner fins. Lots of soot!

We have front landing gear! Here's a few pictures of the fuel tank under the hood. The two pipes leading under the frame will lead into the two rear engines. I also threw in a picture of what's in the trunk. There's a bunch of pipes and hoses I need to add. I want it to have excessive hoses and hydraulic lines everywhere. It's not glued together yet. Hopefully everything lines up well in the end. I'm having issues with the way that the hood meets up to the body. Even before I started all of the heavy modifications, I had trouble with the way they fit.

My son has quite a few old Gundam models. The thought didn't even cross my mind.......I was racking my brain for weeks, trying to come up with something. I'll be sure to look through his scrap bin on my next build. The more I look at the photos of the rear end, the more I dislike the "fake" vent inside the center exhaust. I might have to come up with something new. That's one thing I hate on new cars of today. Fake plastic vents. Fake hood scoops.... One more thing that I feel that I need to clarify! The 2 pipes coming off the right side of the vehicle. These are heat shields for the fuel lines that feed the 2 rear engines. I wanted to accentuate the fact that the car was asymmetrical. It needed something extra on that side of the car. They look like exhaust pipes, but if you look under the frame, there's a large diameter hose coming out of each pipe feeding the rear engines.

I came up with a solution for the rear side-thrusters this weekend. They fit snug inside the rim, which allows them to pivot slightly. I'm very happy with the results! I have hoses and wires hanging from the undercarriage. I hope to make them more visible. I also have plans to make retractable landing skids that will be tucked up between the frame and the front suspension. They will not be articulated, but they will be visible. I'm not too excited about starting the interior and windows. Thank you for all of the positive comments! More grime and weathering to continue....still learning as I go.

It took me two months to pick out a color combo for this model. I finally went with blue and white. The white is a very light cream color. The blue is Nassau Blue metallic. There's a lot left to do. I haven't posted pictures in a while and thought I should get some up here. There's lots of pieces not installed in the following pictures and I still need to finish up the weathering. I'm going to add flaps that will be hinged to the rear of the front fenders. That little lever coming out from the side of the hood will attach to the flap. I'm also working on a side thruster that'll stick out of the rear "wheel holes". Similar to the first two photos at the very beginning of this post. The front turbines need to be moved towards the rear slightly, The last jet car that I made didn't have landing gear. It always bothered me. How does it land? I've got hydraulic skid plates in the rear. They pivot a little for landing, but only very slightly. I'm working on similar skid plates for the front that'll be much smaller. I plan to add a trim piece between the blue and white.

Thanks for all the comments!! I hope you're all in for the long haul, because I'm a slow builder.......I worked on a few things, but I have a long way to go. I'm having a difficult time keeping the chopped top from separating at the A pillars. How many times per model, do you guys set up "mock ups"? I must set this thing up on it's stand, 4 to 5 times per night. I put everything on with pins and tape, just to see what it'll look like. When you're done working your model for the night, do you always put it in it's stance? I Changed the side intake to make it look more aggressive. I plan on adding 2 more fins between the existing. I'm working on a linkage for the front flaps. If anyone has any ideas for this, please let me know. The "fake" side pipes. These are what I imagined as a heat shield for some wires and hydraulic lines. Like in the first photos, there will be lines coming from these pipes that feed into the underside of the car. Wide load! I can't wait to paint it. I am going for something like this......I think.
