  1. looked up Magic chef and Harbor Freight on line. Neither one listed a dehydrator. Any suggestions?
  2. Just a word of caution. 6th graders are old enough to realize their limitations. When showing your builds, you might want to stress how long it took you to develop the skill level that you now have. Maybe even show them one of your older builds so that they can see the progress that time and patience can achieve. As an example. It would be hard for a 6th grader to see him or her self doing a double back flip that you demonstrate when they can hardly do a somersault. Just my thought
  3. Great. Not as dumb as I thought. I use DupliColor primer all the time and have used some of their colors as well with good results. My kids got me an air brush set up for xmas so thats why I'm looking for some small quantity colors. Want to do some experimenting with color mixing etc...
  4. Thanks Mike. Will do the search.
  5. I too prefer lacquers. However, I can't seem to find many color variations other than in large spray cans. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. The only acrylics that I have found are flat finish. I just got back into building a few months ago after a 40 year lay off and have few material sources. Any suggestions for small quantity lacquers with large color selections? And, this might sound stupid but, couldn't flat acrylics be brought to gloss by covering with a clear coat?
  6. I'm a pretty impatient guy who just can't keep his hands off of painted parts. I know that using a food dehydrator will speed up the curing time for the paint, and am about to purchase one, but need some help. Any recommendations as to manufacture? Or are they all about the same? Suggested time and temps for the various paint mediums? HELP! I'm going nuts watching the paint dry.
  7. Got an air brush kit and compressor for XMAS and trying to get out of my rattle can painting. My building skills are minimal. Detailing to me is plug wires and maybe fuel lines. If I can get two tones on an interior I'm happy. That being said, maybe I can up grade my painting, with a bunch of practice on spoons and old bodies of course. I see here, and in the magazine photos, references to paint jobs using HOK or nail polish. Any help using these products, primers, thinners, recommended psi, drying times, etc would be greatly appreciated. Seems to be a huge variety of colors to play with. I know, pretty basic stuff to you folks, but I'm really a newbe at this. My high tech painting involved heating a rattle can before using. Thanks in advance.

    70 Super Bird

Outstanding!!!!! I wont believe it's a model until I see a picture of it next to the box. (then I still might not).
  9. Thanks Mark. Great hints and super link. Printed "The Complete Future", and I'm sure that it will get lots of use. I would recommend this link to even the most experianced builders.
  10. Future seems to be one of the magic elixirs of model car building, but I have never tried it, and know nothing about it. What are your favorite uses for it? And how do you apply it for those uses? Yep, I'm looking for a ton of hints all at once on this super stuff.
  11. WOW!!! Looks just great. Almost seems a shame to cover all of the interior detail with a body.
  12. My kids got tired of my rattle can paint jobs and got me a Paasche VL-SET airbrush with a D-500 compressor for XMAS. What do I do next? Is there a thread somewhere that can steer me to what paints? What consistency? Pressure regulators? Filters? Clean up methods? et all? I know that this is something that I will have to learn, but any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Heck, someday I might end up with a paint job worthy of posting.
  13. solder instead of solid wire shouldn't have a "memory".
  14. O.K. Gang, here is the problem. I am working on the AMT 60 Corvette. I am having a real problem fitting the grill into the body. Seems like a bad fit. I have tried micro filing, both body and grill, and just can't get a good fit. My idea... enlarge body openings, grease up grill parts with vasoline or wax paper, tape grill in place, and fill voids with putty, remove grill and sand as needed for final fit after paint. Questions... Has anyone tried this before? Will the vasoline or wax paper act as a mold release from the putty, leaving me with the proper holes for grill insertion after paint? If so, would this work also with customizing head and tail lights? Also, if it is feasable, what are your recomenditions for glueing plastic to putty? I know, what with some of the work displayed here, that you folks can do just about anything. Hoping to cash in on your knowledge.
  15. As an "old" guy (75) and just getting back into modeling after about 40 years, I would really like to see some profiles on the master builders that show their works on this forum. It is amazing to me, the detail and skill that these folks have. I gain a lot of knowledge and ideas from the "tips and tricks" section and would really be interested in knowing more about these builders.
  16. Why wings at all?
  17. I thought gull wing doors opened from bottom up. The reason I say that is because I'm trying to figure a way to do it.

    Car lot

Thanks Mike, but none of the above would be on the lot. Just street rods. Some have suggested a 59 Caddy so I'm looking for a kit. This guy is just a plain old huckster so he wouldn't be driving anything classy. I'm also thinking about an early, beat up, compact but can't seem to find anything that old.
  19. Got em. Nice. Got the instant horizons back ground, went to the only place in town who could enlarge the whole scene to fit all three walls and opted out when I heard the price. $110.00 So... Just used it for the back wall. It is HO scale. Got some G scale back grounds and put them on the side walls, added popsickle stick fencing all around, and now the whole sceen has a nice 3D effect. Thanks for all of the help.
  20. I'll pass on a masking tip that I got from one of the forums. It worked great on my first two tone, but may be to difficult for small stripes. I'm not good at "word pictures" but I hope that you get the idea. Apply the first color. Lets call it blue. Mask the area that will remain blue. Apply another coat of the first color to the masked edge. Any bleed through will be blue and should seal the masked edge. Then apply the second color. As I said, I tried this on my first two tone and the edges came out super sharp.
  21. I would like to try some metalic or candy paints. No air brush, paint booth, or de-hydrater, available. Need some help on primers, undercoats, finishes and prep work. All suggestions are appreciated.
