Have you tried any Richard Marcinko books ? http://www.amazon.com/Rogue-Warrior-Richard-Marcinko/dp/0671795937/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1462722581&sr=8-2&keywords=richard+marcinko+books The first two or three are really great, after that kinda lose with the facts.
Let's not bash HL too bad, there is a place here for beginners and those of us returning to the hobby. And I gotta admit it is kinda fun looking at all those reissued kits in one place.
Thread too BIG ? broke it into three parts. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/113373-hobby-lobby-a-great-place-to-go-if-youre-just-starting-out-or-getting-back-in-the-hobby/
Getting back into the hobby? Check out some of those old kits you remember from the past, a lot of popular kits from years gone by have been reissued. That should put a smile on face. Pick up right where you left off. It doesn't get any better than this. Enjoy.
But just look at what Hobby Lobby has to offer the new builder. A very nice variety of kits representing our hobby as it stands now. They also have a good selection of tools and paints to get started all in one place.
Putting a couple of threads together here, "I'm new / returning to the hobby, where do I start ? All the hobby shops I used to frequent are gone."
"Hobby Lobby, all they have is stuff I already have"
Read this one a few times, kinda like the Zen of fixin' old cars / trucks. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0874517559/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=TMNZGN15B6B5&coliid=I8GW79QMVI8C
Man, don't beat yourself up so bad. Good points on the whys and wherefores we didn't get one kit or another. Safe bet there are others with similar stories. Mine was just not being in country.
I didn't miss the '28 Model A MPC / AMT.

I built it, cut the back door out to make a "Surf" rod, ala Car Crafts Model magazine article.
"Back in the day."
Not a Big Rig modeler, but the subject caught my attention. Got me thinkin' of "Giddy Up Go " also. seems like there were a few more along the lines of "309".
My Dads brother was a truck driver outta north west Ohio, run for a bunch of Truck Farms and Campbell Soup.
