Cayman update: Tired of polishing Leaving it as is 5/21/07
ismaelg replied to ismaelg's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Half of the interior work is done. I now need to work on the dash, shifter, steering wheel, pedals etc. I still need to dust off some flocking material from the seats. The cargo net shows some weird reflections, but it looks better than in the pic. Thanks, -
Nice builds! Welcome to the forum!

Cayman update: Tired of polishing Leaving it as is 5/21/07

Thanks guys! Russ, the heat shield is a piece of heavy aluminum foil. Trimmed to shape and then pressed over mesh material so the pattern gets embossed. A drop of superglue keeps it in place. Other than that and the parts box oil filter decal, the rest is 100% box stock. Currently working on the interiors. I'll post pics soon. Thanks, -
Looking good Russ! All of that work will certainly pay off at the end.

I got it! How about push button electrically operated door releases like the new Corvette? -

Darin, I assume you want something modern. How about the master cylinder of a Revell C5/C6 Corvette? It has good detail and can be plumbed. As for the mirrors, my suggestion is: Testarossa! I always loved the look of those mirrors. Another choice is motorcycle (sportbikes) mirrors. That was popular here with the tuner crowd a while ago for smaller mirrors. For my custom C5, I used 1/32 scale mirrors. I think they were from a Trans Am or Camaro. They look just right in a custom. As for the interior door handles, hmmmm I need to get back to you on that one.......... Hope this helps! Thanks, -

Cayman update: Tired of polishing Leaving it as is 5/21/07

The body was cleared and it is taking a nap of at least 2 or 3 weeks before polishing. After that I started working on the underside of the car. These cars have panels covering the bottom, so they are pretty much all black. But if those panels are removed, you can see some overspray from the painting process. I painted this model as if some panels were removed. I also added heat insulation over the mufflers. Now it is on to brakes, followed by interiors Still a long way to go, but slowly getting there... What do you think? Thanks, -
That's it! I'm officially jealous. When is the next one? I want to go. Besides, I didn't see any Corvettes so I have a cause to defend.... Congratulations to my buddy Simon for winning the small scale with the Ferrari 312T. But I' not surprised  Nor I'm surprised at Mark Jones blue Seven winning best of show. Congratulations to all! Thanks,

Dash Insert 61 Vette

I was thinking about the idea of cutting the individual letters and mosaic the word. But I think the letters themselves are too big. -
Dash Insert 61 Vette
ismaelg replied to Len Woodruff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Len, Keith Marks has a decal sheet for early Corvettes and it includes among other things the lettering that I think can be used for that. (under the headlight grilles). This could be a starting point. Thanks, -

Hello, After 2 weeks of rain, I finally got a chance to apply clear to this project. WOW! I can't believe it but this thing has 20 coats on it!!!!! (Of course there was a lot of sanding on some of them) and each one of them was a gloves-off "in your face" open challenge to the red plastic bleeding gremlins 2 coats of T235 primer 2 coats of moon mud primer 8 color coats 8 coats of clear It will have plenty of time to dry before polishing. I'll work now on the chassis, interiors and everything else, which is usually a few weeks. Then I'll polish it before final assembly. Thanks, -
Tell me about Duplicolor sandable primer
ismaelg replied to LDO's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree. I get Plastikote at a local automotive paint retailer. Next time I'm there I want to buy a case, just in case The online store locator was not of much help, at least here. But Duplicolor dominates the retail mass market like Pep Boys, NAPA, Advanced Auto, Western Auto, Wal Mart etc. I used to find both back in the day but not now. -

I had problems with it crazing the new Revell plastic. I prefer Plastikote T-235 but it is harder to find than Duplicolor. Test it first, maybe the inside of the body. If it doesn't craze the plastic, it is good stuff. I used it in the past. Thanks, -
R/M Ferrari 612 hood fit
ismaelg replied to Merkur XR4Ti's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Steve, This kit can be frustrating at times. I've done 2 already. Most 612 builds I've seen have the same problem. In my first build the idea from the begining was to keep the hood in the opened position due to all the work done in the engine. I added struts to keep it open. Just before adding the struts I noticed it didn't close properly, just as you are finding out. Did you already glued the hood hinge part in place? If not, see if the hood closes properly without it. If that's the case you can probably separate the hinges and avoid using the center section, or maybe trimming the end of the hinge if it is hitting the cowl. But I think the engine bay insert will also need some grinding at the back. Option # 2 is what some people are doing, and what I did in my second build: "Curbside". Glue the hood shut, without the engine bay cover, but I have to admit the engine in this car is beautiful..... If you haven't already, getting the body with the interiors sit properly and evenly with the chassis is also a challenge. Hope this helps. Keep us posted on the progress. Thanks, -
Press releases are usually puffed up and heavy on makeup, but I really like what I see behind this one. I think we are heading towards yet another golder era in our beloved hobby......

ismaelg replied to Gray Smith's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looking good Gray! I love the oil filters. Your color choice sounds good as well. Just one suggestion: Is it possible to press the plug wires closer to the red cover at the back of the engine? The idea in my mind is to have a little curve down as they exit the distributors. Thanks, -
Now THAT is a cool mean MODERN ride! I love where this is going. Will keep an eye on this... Thanks,
-
I agree with what they all say. Also, I did something weird: I actually READ and followed the instructions on the bottle! For the chopper headlight I did 2 mist coats instead of a heavy one and it's the best alclad job I've ever done! Thanks,
-
Jon, This project is really looking absolutely FABULOUS! You are doing a great job on it. I'll follow up this one very closely. Thanks,
-
Cool! Very nice color combo!
