I needed some different tires than the kit had and different wheels. The kit wheels are 5 spoke and the C800 uses 6 spoke. I purchased several kits from a fellow member here and in the lot of kits was a Italeri/RoG truck that had 6 spoke wheels, he also sent me the nearly correct military lugged tires. I had to slightly modify the wheels as they had holes all the way through for axles. Parts box extras fixed them up right nicely. I also had to change the wheel base to match the FMC trucks. A bit of internet searching landed me an Air Force manual for the truck complete with drawings. I scaled one of them up so I have something to measure from and build off of. At this time I have made a "bench" seat for the cab and started working on the box/tank for the back. I have a huge amount of work left to do, but it is fun to build something that I used to use all the time. BTW the last picture is a Landoll, not an FMC. Almost the same, but slight differences.

I joined the Air Force in 1993, served till 2007. During that time I was a Crew Chief on the C141B and the C17A. I spent 11 years at McChord AFB in Washington. During the winter months we got a lot of ice and a little snow, but rarely more than a few inches. However every time there is ice or snow the planes need to be deiced. I spent many hours on the flight line each morning sitting in a Ford C800 FMC deicer truck. It has been my dream to build a replica of one of these great trucks. Many fond memories driving these. I started with the cab. Because these trucks were all 80's models I had to update the cab. I removed the emblems on the front, then I cut off a set of fenders from a spare cab and added them to this cab to make it a post 74. I also removed the windshield wipers because in the later trucks they were mounted differently. I will add a blue oval style ford logo to the front and use parts box wipers. I also opened the vents on the side of the cab and added a window in the top like the FMC Deicers had.

Does it really matter if CF did or did not had a DD with sleeper? Build it the way you want or dream and call it a "what if" or Phantom build. Unless you are dead set on making a copy of a real world 1:1, then have fun and build it the way you want or dream of. BTW, you have some really great trucks in the works. I really have to fight the urge to start new projects before I finish another, ADHD. However I just finished one today so I am free to start another.

Ultimate Adventure Unimog U1300L
Oldmopars replied to Oldmopars's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I have been working on this a bit more and I now have a partial second kit to work with and a 3rd partial if needed. I cut the cab apart and added the section from the second kit and I have also added to the frame to get the length right. This has been a challenge as the cabs have opening doors, so keeping everything straight and true has been tough. -
Thank you. At this point I am ready to call it done. I may touch up the weathering a little bit, but otherwise it is done. I will get some better outdoor pictures today or tomorrow and post them underglass. But, for now, here it is. And one picture from the the show, so you know why it looks like it does.

Well I stalled out for a few weeks on this build, but mainly due to being out of town. In the last 2 months I have been in Indiana, Atlanta, San Diego, Victoria BC, Los Angeles and Yakima, all for a week each or more. Bench time has slowed to a crawl. However I was able to get home a little early this week and got a bit done on the truck. I think I am finished. I am posting a picture here now, and will get the final nice outside pictures later today. As you can see it has a dusty look to it, this is not from sitting on the shelf, I have spent a fair bit of time weathering it to look this way. I may have a few little bits to touch up, but I think it is basically done.

Ford Aeromax 120 RV Truck Conversion

I love it, this is fantastic. You have inspired to build my Unimog Overland camper. I love how you found the 3D printer to make the frame, the paint work is spot on. Very nice build and looks just like the big Super C's I see on the road. Great job. -

WOW, incredible! I love it. I always love a 4070, but this is crazy over the top, simply beautiful. Well done. -
3/4 scale betterbilt
Oldmopars replied to truker35's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Very cool. Many years ago I saw something like this. A guy built a 3/4 scale Pete on a pick-up chassis. The only issue with it was that at full size the Pete cab was somewhat roomy, however in 3/4 scale it was way too small for me to sit in comfortably. It like the chopped top Ford 28-33 3 window Hod Rods, they look fantastic, but you are folded up like an origami swan. That one is very nice and well done. -
I have seen this type of truck several times, but have no idea what it is called and so I can't find pictures because I have no idea what it is. Imagine a normal truck with sleeper, long frame and a short box on the back, but still able to haul a trailer behind it. Its like a very short trailer box stuck on the back of the truck, but still has the fifth wheel to haul a trailer. What are they called?

Fantastic, thanks for the info. I did not know about the wider fenders. It seems I may have a spare cab to work with, I could trim the fenders off of one and add to the other. Or I may save the extra cab and just try to add in a section. I will see when they get here. Anyone know of a source for 6 spoke wheels?

Bonding ABS to styrene
Oldmopars replied to delta99's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have found that there are times when what you want is not available in styrene. Some shapes are only available in ABS. I have even had to use PVC a few times when I could not get what I wanted in styrene. I made the tank on my septic truck out of PVC pipe caps and glued them with MEK. Also, PVC pipe is great for making fuel tanks with no seams. MEK will allow you to bond PVC pipe with the styrene ends. -
Warmer weather project
Oldmopars replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I don't remember having any issues with the bed, it went together just fine. You should have no issues unless the re-pop is warped or bad. -
I am wanting to do some small scale resin casting. Like I need a spare tire for a Unimog. I also want to replicate some engine parts, etc. Basically I want to copy parts from kits that would keep me from having to buy a whole kit and waste it just to get one part, or a few parts. I am not looking to take away anything from the few wonderful resin casters that make stuff for us right now. So, I had a "Kit" that I got from Hobby Lobby and it worked good. Looking for something like that, brand names etc. Any links to silicon or the right resins on Amazon would be great. I see a lot of stuff, but most of it seems to be the wrong stuff for my use.

Warmer weather project
Oldmopars replied to JerseeJerry55's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I built this one several years ago and for the most part it builds very nice. The plow is a bit tricky just because of all the little parts, but not too bad and the details are a bit lacking, but you can add your own. Overall I loved this build and had a lot of fun doing it. I would show you pictures, but it and several other of my models were stolen and it is gone. It was an original kit, but the good news is that they are redoing it and I can build it again. -
Sources for a Dana 60
Oldmopars replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I used BNL resin's and they are really nice and fair priced. I hate to buy a full kit t rob a couple of major parts out of it. I got 2 axles and T-Case for less than half of a new kit. -
Last year for the Vannonball Run build-off I did what I called the Ultimate Adventure G30 4X4 van. It is a high top 4x4 conversion of the AMT Rescue van. See here: This year I decided that I wanted to continue and maybe make a series of "Ultimate Adventure" trucks. I am into Overlanding and this is up my alley. This year I will be doing a conversion of the Unimog Fire truck into a Overland Camper like the one pictured below. I may try to convert it to a 4 door if I get another cab to work with. I think I will be doing a box slightly larger than the one in the picture and add a few things to make it mine, but this gives the direction I am going.

I was in the Air Force from 1993-2007 with a short time in the Guard also. During that time I was an Aircraft Crew Chief. I mostly worked on the planes, C17A, C141B. During this time one of the things we were required to do was De-ice the planes during the winter when it was icy or had snowed. In 1988 Landoll got the contract to build the De-icer trucks. They used the C600 as the base for them. By 1993 ever De-icer the Air Force had was a Landoll C600. I spent many many hours in the cab driving around from plane to plane as a guy in the bucket sprayed the de-icing fluids on the planes. Now I want to build on in scale. All the research I have tells me that the engine used in them was a Detroit 8.2L NA. This was a 4 stroke non-turbo, non-blown engine. They were not a good engine, but it was what they had in them. There are non in kit form. Any idea what might be close? Maybe the Cat 1160? Second, where can I get the tires used? They were very chunky looking 11.00-20. See pictures below. I could just use the kit tires, but I always remember how bad these rode, part of the memory.

Bonding ABS to styrene
Oldmopars replied to delta99's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I use MEK, I use it to bond Styrene all the time and it works with other plastics like ABS etc. If you look at any of the glues used, the active ingredient is MEK. It is the chemical that melts the plastic and "Welds" it together. I buy it in a quart can and just pour it into a Plastructs bottle I have. Once bonded, it is a royal pain to get back apart. -
