Great Mountain Climber!
Oldmopars replied to Rusty92's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
I have this kit about 3/4 done. I ditched the bed and have a service truck bed on mine. This required cutting the frame to make it longer and trimming off a bunch of stuff. As for the front spring, they are bad, but not as bad as you think. The factory springs on all square body trucks (Front 4x4) were reverse arc and only 2 leaves. I have a 90 Suburban and they look just like the kit springs. -
While I may be moving along, this is only half of the build. The trailer is going to be very involved also. I have more done, I got the lights on the hood, lights on the roof, exhaust is made and the tubes routed. I got the glass in, the fronts are sprayed with some flat clear to look dirty. The rest of the truck will get dirtied up too. I have the cab all glued, the sleeper is attached and finished. I am almost ready to final assemble this and get to work on the weathering. Weathering will be fairly light as this truck is in good shape, but in the show it is very dusty and dirty. So, no rust or damage, just lightly used. I don't know what they were thinking with the exhaust, but the TV truck has those crazy double stacks, and in the show they are covered in a bronze/rusty color. I guess in Hollywood you just add stuff for no reason to make it look cool or from another planet.

Well the TV truck has this huge Bull Bar/Animal Guard on the front of it. In the opening scene where the truck first shows up in the show, it materializes out of a cloud of smoke and smashes through the Agents of Shield vehicles. Trucks go flying and then it stops and Sarge jumps out. He then goes and kills on of the Agents to free his cohort Snowflake. So, this huge Bull bar is very much a part of what made this truck so ominous and villainous. It had to be scratch built, as the one on the TV truck is huge and custom built for the TV truck. This took most of the day to make. It is attached like the TV truck in that is tilts with the hood. I also finished the interior the other day. The added handle on the passenger side in the Cloaking Handle, this was also part of what made this truck special. Sarge would pull the handle and the truck could vanish and then it would reapear somewhere else.

Look at the kits you do have, then go to IMCDB.com and see what movies they were used in and pick one from the list. You will have something.

Question for the Management. One of the rules for the build is that it must be street legal to include lights etc. In all the pictures of my truck the mirrors are removed. I guess they got in the way of filming. I will need them according to the rules, but they will take away from the "Authenticity" of the build. What do you say?

Keeping this ball rolling, I have made some progress. As you can see the hood is looking a lot better. The last picture I posted it looked like it was done by a first grader. It is still not perfect but it is closer to the final product. I also added details to the cab, the propane tank is on the side and the details, whatever they are is on the doors. I added the wings to the sleeper and the blacked out lights, don't know why, Hollywood. As you build something like this and look at the details, you find out Hollywood does some odd things with its props. Most of it only makes sense when it is going by on film at 60 MPH, but up close you wonder what they were thinking.

It seems this years challenge has brought in more interest that last year. That is a great thing. I really hope everyone finishes this year, there are some really great cars/trucks being done. Now get to the bench and start working. Nobody wants to show up at the finish line all alone.

For me I have less time. My build is also in the Big Rig Build Off on this same site and it ends in August.

There are some really cool trucks in the works, I really hope everyone gets them done. I am excited to have some big rig builds to follow.

BRBO KENWORTH SERVICE TRUCK
Oldmopars replied to vettecote's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
What a great build. I used to drive a service truck for a large rental company, but never got a truck this big or this cool. Looking forward to what you do with this. -
BRBO International LoneStar
Oldmopars replied to DPNM's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
That truck was a bold move by International. I am so glad someone captured it in plastic and glad that you are going to turn it into something great. -

51? I am right there with you at 50. We are still young, we just seem to make more noise when we move. Cool project -

Great old truck. This should be fun. Do you plan on any engine or just curb side? -
BRBO 2020 - Kenworth COE Aerodyne
Oldmopars replied to iamsuperdan's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I like this. I built one of those car haulers back in the mid 80's. I of course was much younger then and the complexity of that construction was a real challenge back then. Take it slow and easy. -
