'64 Chevy C30
bobss396 replied to dodgefever's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
On the '60 I'm using, I opened up the grille from the back, looks more better. VCG Resins makes a '66 GMC conversion as well. -
AMT 1953 Ford F100

Nice... I haven't built one since around 1970 or so... -
Google's "AI Overview" is really, really stupid.
bobss396 replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
My 2¢ on AI... go back and watch the Terminator movie series. There was a tale on AI some years back. Amazon had 2 AI systems going, not sure if it was a beta test or what. Anyway, the 2 systems quickly created their own language and shut out everyone else. Amazon pulled the plug on those real fast. -
Nice.... those were always a challenging build, some parts were extra-fiddly. Digging the paint big time. Well done.

Brake fluid will turn conventional resin parts to mush.

I have a few myself, I have a mid-line Badger, IIRC the 250. They used to be available at Michaels with the 40% coupon, it was a steal. I'd suggest buying new vs used. Get something that you can get parts for.

Do you also have 1:1 project cars?
bobss396 replied to ctruss53's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hate when that happens. Prestone used to sell a "flush" kit, so I used one on my '67 Chevy back around 1975. It seemed to wash out the water pump seal, pretty embarrassing to have happen in a friend's driveway. -
Why some people should never drive
bobss396 replied to bobthehobbyguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I had a neighbor pull a great one on her driver's test maybe around 1970. She was using a driving school car to boot. This is when tests were done on main streets. Well, she plowed into a row of parked cars during her test. -
That is about what I was doing for almost a solid year. Now I have a car project going and it is summer. I'm doing a lot outside as of late. I even have a clear-ish dining room table, my kids are after me to do some house cleaning... not that it needs it... I was juggling many projects, insanity now that I step away from it. I need to focus on ONE AT A TIME going forward.

I know there are options, I have no problem wearing glasses, I have since age 7. It would be nice to have some good OTC sunglasses like Ray Bans, heck... maybe 2 pairs.
-
I should go for it myself. Now I pay out of pocket for glasses and even with a plan they were still up there in price. A guy I worked with had it done, the first thing he noticed was how bright colors were. I'm also curious what impact it may have on model building. I'm so used to taking my glasses off to see something close up.

What's with the U.S.Post office these days?
bobss396 replied to styromaniac's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I have had 2 incidents with things mailed to the house. One was a paint order for my Belair, I had a UPS shipping # and all. THEN... it was somehow handed off to the USPS. It may be a letter-carrier error, nobody is owning up to it. It is not eligible for a claim according to UPS. I'm trying to get a refund through my credit union. The place I got the paint from, they don't answer emails or phone calls. I have a BBB complaint open with them. The next was a tool order from eBay, less than $20. Supposedly delivered to my house, they can give no proof of delivery. I'm trying to get the seller to send me another one. With that said, if possible I will have anyone but the USPS send me something. -
I lost 40 lbs since I retired in 2020 and feel much better. Most of my blood work numbers are good, my AiC is a little high, I had had ice cream and cake a few days before it was tested at the hospital a few days ago with my stent job. With obtaining the Belair project in May, I definitely feel better getting moving again. I was battling crippling lower back pain in March and May, now it is much better. I had to walk around the house holding onto things, it was that bad.

Another Rattlecan MPC modified in the works.
bobss396 replied to Rattlecan Dan's topic in WIP: NASCAR
My last 2 modifieds, I went with the Extreme Lacquer line of paint, used the clear too. IMO, the best lacquer combination around. The clear was so good, in both cases, no polishing. -

I have had 2 of them go bad on me over the years. They would do a variety of things, carp out completely while driving. I'd wait a few minutes and it would start again, go 200 yards, rinse repeat. I had another, if the car was running and shut off for less than 15 minutes, it would start up. Past that, I'd have to wait 2+ hours for it to start again. I planned my errands accordingly. -
Tack / mist coat vs wet coat
bobss396 replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I went to lacquers only 20+ years ago and have never turned back. They are more forgiving that enamels and the learning curve is short as well. I am this many years old hearing the term "tack coat" for the first time. -

Very innovative, keep up the good work. -
Those are great kits, I built a few MANY years ago, with the big hemi and the clear hood.

Tack / mist coat vs wet coat
bobss396 replied to atomicholiday's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I'm not big on "mist" coats, this is a good way to get a grainy mess. On bodies, after priming I start painting with the body upside down. This way I get the rockers and other hard-to-reach places with good initial coverage. Once that is dry, I'll color-sand out anything that is not dead nuts smooth. Then I'll turn the body right side up and start painting. In almost all cases, I'll color-sand between coats. My last coat(s) get applied on the heavy-ish side. Worst case, I'll get a minor sag once in a while, an easy fix with lacquers. -
I always knock the pins off. Then I go with a light application of Tamiya liquid glue, clamp the parts together or hold them in a small vise. After that sets up, I'll give it more liquid glue and let it sit overnight or 2 hours in the dehydrator. Then sand, putty, sand, prime... more putty and sanding if required. It really has to look good from the bottom. Sometimes I separate the engine and transmission. A little extra work but worth it to paint the parts 2 different colors and look good.

Thanks. My brother had one done when he was 41, after a heart attack while working out of the US. He got home.. straight to the ER. He got the stent done right away. He does a lot of road biking, a 20 mile trip is routine for him. Last year he started having chest pains and had to slow it down. He went it to the local cath lab and has 2 more stents done, he is 100% fine. Like I said, I really had no signs but the stress test showed up 2 areas of poor blood flow. The one that was fixed was fairly blocked. I see the heart doctor tomorrow. The pool ban is only for 5 days, I can handle that since 2 days are already past.
